Australia’s Murray-Darling Basin is beset with complex natural resource management (NRM), particularly on private lands. Addressing these complexities requires applied ecological research, local knowledge, access to research sites, and collaboration and effective relationships between researchers, organizations, and landholders. First Nations peoples and their knowledge could also contribute significantly to address these post-colonial NRM complexities. Consequently, we examined past collaborations between First Nations knowledge holders and Western researchers engaged in Australian NRM research on public and private lands. Three of this paper’s authors were invited by a group of farmers, landholders, and community members to provide advice on how to address local NRM issues on private lands within the broader context of declining engagement between government agencies and research institutions with rural communities and landholders in the New South Wales Mid-Murray region of the Murray-Darling Basin. We collaborated with the group to identify and explore experiences with NRM policy, management, and related research through stories and lived experiences in NRM. We also identified barriers to improving biodiversity conservation and NRM research in the region, including the absence of the use of local First Nations knowledge to address NRM problems. We explored a community of practice as a means to improve relationships and collaboration between local communities that include farmers and First Nations peoples, government agencies, and research institutions in undertaking NRM research on private land. This highlighted the need for broader engagement with First Nations peoples and local rural community in participation and leadership roles in NRM research. We also explored how First Nations peoples could best participate in culturally safe and respectful ways that acknowledged their interests in co-designing and participating in relevant and effective NRM research. In response we propose a Hybrid Research Model that incorporates First Nations and Western perspectives.

The IBM POWER6(TM) microprocessor core includes two accelerators for increasing performance of specific workloads. The vector multimedia extension (VMX) provides a vector acceleration of graphic and scientific workloads. It provides single instructions that work on multiple data elements. The instructions separate a 128-bit vector into different components that are operated on concurrently. The decimal floating-point unit (DFU) provides acceleration of commercial workloads, more specifically, financial transactions. It provides a new number system that performs implicit rounding to decimal radix points, a feature essential to monetary transactions. The IBM POWER(TM) processor instruction set is substantially expanded with the addition of these two accelerators. The VMX architecture contains 176 instructions, while the DFU architecture adds 54 instructions to the base architecture. The IEEE 754R Binary Floating-Point Arithmetic Standard defines decimal floating-point formats, and the POWER6 processor-on which a substantial amount of area has been devoted to increasing performance of both scientific and commercial workloads-is the first commercial hardware implementation of this format. Medication Possession and Glycemic Control Among Uninsured Type 2 Diabetics
2012
Diabetes is a complex disease, and patients face barriers to reaching glycosylated hemoglobin (HgbA1c) goals. A retrospective cohort chart review evaluated if the cost of diabetes medications is a barrier to glycemic goals in uninsured patients receiving reduced-cost medications. Thirty-five patients were followed over 6 months to determine the association between HgbA1c and medication possession, monthly income, drug costs/month/patient, and poverty level. Higher HgbA1c was associated with higher drug cost/month (P = 0.005), but better medication possession was not associated with lower HgbA1c levels. Providers should tailor care to address factors (other than cost) known to influence HgbA1c.

Impairment: Implications for the Counseling Profession
1988
The issue of impairment has not been adequately addressed in the professional counseling literature. The authors explore the issue of impairment in the counseling profession, drawing from the literatures of medicine and psychology in discussing the prevalence of impairment, several views of the topic, responses to the problem, and related ethical considerations. Recommendations for the analysis and resolution of impairment issues in counseling are presented.

Meeting local needs? Case study of a communication project in the Pacific Islands
2000
The Internet has become a major source and vehicle for technological transfer and project development during the 1990s. Three Pacific Island countries—Fiji, Samoa and Vanuatu—were connected through Pactok, an inexpensive computer‐mediated communication (CMC) system originally developed for non‐government organizations (NGOs) through the Pacific Sustainable Development Networking Project (PSDNP). The PSDNP was established by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1993 and funded by the UNDP until December 1996. Content analysis of the Project Document indicated that although the PSDNP aimed to improve access by these countries to scientific and technical information, an important underlying theme was to ensure these Pacific Island countries were connected to the Internet. It also appeared that the agency was keen for organizations in these countries to increase access to international information, with little regard for local and regional sources. Subsequent analysis of Pactok sites early in 1997 showed that the PSDNP had encouraged the project's primary stakeholders—regional organizations and NGOs—to join Pactok. However, international agencies such as the UNDP and other foreign assistance also have access to Pactok and are able to disseminate agency ideologies, objectives and priorities directly to users in Pacific Island countries. The church and addiction treatment: A ministry of service and integration
1993
In the summer of 1992 a new addiction treatment facility opened in the community of Girard, Kansas. Thus an opportunity for ministry with alcoholics and addicts presented itself to the First Christian Church. In the beginning, the project was simply to bring the Church into a relationship of ministry with the clients and staff of the newly opened facility; and to promote an awareness of the needs being met by the facility among the people of Girard. The ministry was expanded with the involvement of other churches and organizations in the community. The deeper we moved into this project, the more other possibilities opened up. Specifics are mentioned. There are two foundations for this ministry that are of the utmost importance for us to understand as we attempt to fulfill our calling in relationship to alcoholics and addicts. These are the theological insights that are necessary for the people of the Church to grasp as they respond to God's call for ministry and make their own unique contribution to it. The first foundation is the need to recognize that all humans, including ourselves, stand in the need of God's grace and redemption. The second foundation is the recognition that because we are Christians, everything we do is ministry. I began this project by first selecting a group of individuals from among the membership of First Christian Church who had expressed an interest in establishing such a ministry as this to serve as an advisory committee. The committee consisted of five persons and myself. Once the committee was formed, we began meeting on a regular weekly schedule. The next phase of the project involved the planning and presenting a series of public educational sessions followed by an increased involvement with the activities of ministry as they grew out of our increased knowledge.
