A precise measurement of the magnetic field in the corona of the black hole binary V404 Cygni
Observations of binary stars containing an accreting black hole or neutron star often show x-ray emission extending to high energies (>10 kilo–electron volts), which is ascribed to an accretion disk corona of energetic particles akin to those seen in the solar corona. Despite their ubiquity, the physical conditions in accretion disk coronae remain poorly constrained. Using simultaneous infrared, optical, x-ray, and radio observations of the Galactic black hole system V404 Cygni, showing a rapid synchrotron cooling event in its 2015 outburst, we present a precise 461 ± 12 gauss magnetic field measurement in the corona. This measurement is substantially lower than previous estimates for such systems, providing constraints on physical models of accretion physics in black hole and neutron star binary systems.
Quasars, supermassive black holes, and host galaxy evolution; Quasars, supermassive black holes, and host galaxy evolution; F. Hamann et al
We discuss some recent results from a program to study the relationships between AGNs, super-massive black holes (SMBHs), and their surrounding host galaxies. The results are based on broad emission-line diagnostics of the SMBH masses and metal abundances in a unique sample of 578 Type 1 AGNs. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
ENCORE: An \\(\\mathcal{O}(N_{\\rm g}^2)\\) Estimator for Galaxy \\(N\\)-Point Correlation Functions
We present a new algorithm for efficiently computing the \\(N\\)-point correlation functions (NPCFs) of a 3D density field for arbitrary \\(N\\). This can be applied both to a discrete spectroscopic galaxy survey and a continuous field. By expanding the statistics in a separable basis of isotropic functions built from spherical harmonics, the NPCFs can be estimated by counting pairs of particles in space, leading to an algorithm with complexity \\(\\mathcal{O}(N_{\\rm g}^2)\\) for \\(N_{\\rm g}\\) particles, or \\(\\mathcal{O}\\left(N_\\mathrm{FFT}\\log N_\\mathrm{FFT}\\right)\\) when using a Fast Fourier Transform with \\(N_\\mathrm{FFT}\\) grid-points. In practice, the rate-limiting step for \\(N>3\\) will often be the summation of the histogrammed spherical harmonic coefficients, particularly if the number of radial and angular bins is large. In this case, the algorithm scales linearly with \\(N_{\\rm g}\\). The approach is implemented in the ENCORE code, which can compute the 3PCF, 4PCF, 5PCF, and 6PCF of a BOSS-like galaxy survey in \\(\\sim\\) \\(100\\) CPU-hours, including the corrections necessary for non-uniform survey geometries. We discuss the implementation in depth, along with its GPU acceleration, and provide practical demonstration on realistic galaxy catalogs. Our approach can be straightforwardly applied to current and future datasets to unlock the potential of constraining cosmology from the higher-point functions.
Black hole masses, metallicities, and emission line properties of quasars
I analyze rest-frame UV spectra for a large sample of 578 Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs), spanning seven orders of magnitude in luminosity, five orders of magnitude in supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass, and a redshift range from 0 ≤ z ≤ 5. I estimate SMBH masses by applying the virial theorem to the CIV λ1549 emission line and estimate metallicities by comparing several emission line ratios involving nitrogen to previous theoretical predictions. I perform the most comprehensive emission-line abundance analysis of a z > 4 quasar and find that even at this redshift, the gas close to quasars has a metallicity of solar or higher. This confirms previous estimates of solar or higher metallicities in these objects and suggests that an episode of vigorous star formation occurred before the observed epoch. Previous studies have found a correlation between luminoisty and metallicity in the broad emission-line region (BLR) and have hypothesized that host galaxy mass may be the parameter that determines metallicity. I test this hypothesis by making the first comparisons between BLR metallicity and SMBH mass, which has been shown correlate directly with host galaxy mass. I find a direct correlation between SMBH mass and BLR metallicity in AGNs, which can be understood in terms of more massive SMBHs residing in more massive host galaxies, combined with the well-known mass-metallicity relationship among galaxies. Neither luminosity, accretion efficiency, nor emission line FWHM shows any trend with metallicity at constant SMBH mass. Previous studies have hypothesized that the enhanced metallicities in Narrow Line Seyfert Is (NLS1s), an unusual subclass of AGNs, may be linked to their high accretion efficiencies. I find that the enhanced metallicities in NLS1s are due to an unknown effect related to the ratio FWHM(CIV)/FWHM(Hβ), and not accretion efficiency. I also examine the Baldwin Effect, an inverse correlation between luminosity and the rest-frame equivalent widths (REWs) of emission lines. I find that emission line REWs and peak heights show a stronger inverse correlation with SMBH mass than with luminosity. I conclude that SMBH mass plays a critical role in defining the spectra of AGNs and that there is growing evidence for a close relationship between AGNs and their host galaxies.
Student and parent satisfaction with online education at the elementary and secondary levels
The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with student and parent satisfaction with online education at the elementary and secondary level. The study involved the development and validation of two questionnaires (student and parent) to determine factors related to satisfaction. The questionnaires were developed through a review of current literature concerning distance and online education and with feedback from administrators and teachers currently working in online education at the elementary and secondary levels. The student satisfaction questionnaire contained 27 items that were assigned to five hypothesized dimensions or factors: (a) school-level technology support, (b) school-level instructional support, (c) curriculum programs, (d) social interactions, and (e) overall satisfaction. The students who completed the digital questionnaire were enrolled in one of three different programs of online education. Results of a maximum likelihood exploratory factor analysis with oblimin (oblique) rotation supported the hypothesized factor structure. A multiple regression analysis also was conducted to determine which of the four specific factors identified by the exploratory factor analysis were related to overall student satisfaction with online education. The multiple regression analysis indicated that school-level technology support, school-level instructional support, curriculum programs, and social interactions were all significantly related to overall student satisfaction. The parent satisfaction questionnaire contained 28 items that were assigned to the same five hypothesized dimensions or factors (e.g., school-level technology support; school-level instructional support; curriculum programs; social interactions; and overall satisfaction). The parents who completed the digital questionnaire had at least one child who was enrolled in one of three different programs of online education. Results of a maximum likelihood exploratory factor analysis with oblimin (oblique) rotation supported the hypothesized factor structure. A multiple regression analysis also was conducted to determine which of the four specific factors identified by the exploratory factor analysis were related to overall parent satisfaction with online education. The multiple regression analysis indicated that school-level instructional support, curriculum programs, and social interactions were significantly related to overall parent satisfaction. School-level technology support was not significantly related to overall parent satisfaction.

Animals do the funniest things
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zXUkedy30 2 There's nothing quite like feeding time at Welsh Mountain Zoo but add penguins and you get a video good enough to be the runner-up in our countdown. Posted by christinelucas in 2008 this video shows a hungry hoard hhttttpp::///wwwwww..yyoouuttuubbee..ccoomm//wwaattcchhvv==WWllvvSSppVVppSS00IIQ 3 There's a good reason why people are warned against feeding seagulls as this video from Llandudno shows. Posted by Letsgoflying92 in October 2010, these hungry birds mass aggressively around a couple eating their chips. hhttttpp::///wwwwww..yyoouuttuubbee..ccoomm//wwaattcchhvv==KK9988TTffSSTTBB11qq4 8 It doesn't get much cuter than this, the staff at the Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay bringing us footage of two little snow leopard cubs. They look playful at this age but will they be quite so friendly when they grow up? hhttttpp::///wwwwww..
