يقص المؤلف في هذا الكتاب روايتي عن كيفية اكتشاف تركيب الحمض النووي، وقد حاولت في عملي هذا أن أشرح جو إنجلترا في الأعوام التالية للحرب مباشرة، حيث وقعت أكثر الحوادث أهمية وإن تقدم العلم-كما آمل أن يوضح هذا الكتاب- نادرا ما يتم بالطريقة المنطقية المستقيمة التي يتخيلها من لا يعمل في حقل العلم، ولكن خطواته إلى الأمام- أو إلى الخلف في بعض الأحايين- هي حوادث إنسانية تماما.
