Management May Never Be the Same
As information, ideas and a global market increasingly drive the success of businesses, the management approach of most organizations is going the way of the punch clock, paper filing systems and executive washrooms. In its place, a new paradigm is emerging that requires companies to make the changes, including: 1. from a focus on price to a focus on the customer, 2. from hierarchy to linkages, and 3. from vertical integration to networks.
The crisis of leadership
While leadership has always been in short supply, its recent absence on the global stage of business and public policy has only confirmed that it is, and probably always has been, the irreducible core dimension of an individual or organization that produces significant results. We need to meet the challenges of leadership which include the following: 1. describing and animating the goals of an organization, 2. embodying and dispelling its values, 3. motivating employees, customers and broader constituencies, 4. engendering a sense of trust in the organization, and 5. managing its scarce resources so that goals can be achieved.

Competing in a global economy
Increasing the global competitiveness of businesses and individuals is the overarching purpose of the American Management Association. The results of a recent survey by Watson Wyatt Worldwide confirm the importance of both organization and leadership in today's companies. Top executives were asked to identify the most important factors in their ability to improve their companies' financial results. Fully 93% rated focusing on the customer as critical to success, while 84% said that developing management talent is a top factor.

Leadership is the focus of attention in business enterprises large and small and in many of the world's governments. Leadership is essential and appropriate at every level of every organization. The focus of the American Management Association is to enable organizations to increase their productivity and profitability.
Individual Demand for Higher Education
Access to higher education has increasingly become a major priority for state and federal policy-makers. Mixtures of student financial aid and low tuition have increasingly been viewed as the means for equalizing access to and choice among institutions of higher education. This paper reviews the recent empirical evidence on the impact of price changes on individual demand for higher education. The evidence suggests that both low tuition and student grants do stimulate increases in enrollment. However, the student aid induced enrollment response is relatively low and the cost per additional student attracted to higher education may be very high.
