BackgroundThere are several studies comparing the difference between adenocarcinoma (AC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC) of lung cancer. However, seldom studies compare the different overall survival (OS) between AC and SqCC at same clinical or pathological stage. The aim of the study was to investigate the 5-year OS between AC and SqCC groups.MethodsData were obtained from the Taiwan Society of Cancer Registry. There were 48,296 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients analyzed between 2009 and 2014 in this retrospective study. We analyzed both the AC and SqCC groups by age, gender, smoking status, Charlson co-morbidity index (CCI) score, clinical TNM stage, pathological stage, tumor location, histologic grade, pleura invasion, performance status, treatment, stage-specific 5-year OS rate in each clinical stage I–IV and causes of death. We used propensity score matching to reduce the bias.ResultsThe AC and SqCC groups are significantly different in age, gender, smoking status, CCI score, clinical TNM stage, pathological stage, tumor location, histologic grade, pleura invasion, performance status, treatment, stage-specific 5-year OS rate in each clinical stage and causes of death (p < 0.0001). The stage-specific 5-year OS rates between AC and SqCC were 79% vs. 47% in stage I; 50% vs. 32% in stage II; 27% vs. 13% in stage III; 6% vs. 2% in stage IV, respectively (all p values < 0.0001).ConclusionsAC and SqCC have significantly different outcomes in lung cancer. We suggest that these two different cancers should be analyzed separately to provide more precise outcomes in the future.

Effects of a synbiotic as an antibiotic alternative on behavior, production performance, cecal microbial ecology, and jejunal histomorphology of broiler chickens under heat stress

The aim of this study was to examine if synbiotics present similar efficiency to a common antibiotic used in poultry production under heat stress (HS) conditions. Two hundred and forty-one-day-old male Ross 708 broiler chicks were distributed among 3 treatments with 8 pens per treatment of 80 birds each for a 42-day trial. From day 15, birds were heat stressed (32°C for 9 h daily, HS) and fed the basal diet (CONT), the basal diet mixed with an antibiotic (Bactiracin Methylene Disalicylate) (0.05 g/kg of feed, BMD) or a synbiotic (0.5 g/kg of feed, SYN). The treatment effects on bird behavior, production performance, jejunal histomorphology, and cecal microbial ecology were examined. Behavioral observation was recorded by using instantaneous scan sampling technique. Production parameters were measured on day 14, 28, and 42. Cecal microbial populations of Escherichia coli and Lactobacilli and jejunal histomorphological parameters were measured at day 42. The results showed that, SYN birds exhibited more feeding and preening but less drinking and panting behaviors compared with both BMD and CONT birds (P < 0.05). The SYN birds also had higher body weight (BW) at both day 28 and 42 compared to CONT birds (P < 0.05). At the end of the experiment, the counts of Escherichia coli of SYN birds were at the similar levels of BMD but were lower than that of CONT birds (P < 0.05); while there were no treatment effects on the populations of Lactobacilli (P > 0.05). In addition, SYN birds had greater villus height compared with both CONT and BMD birds (P < 0.05). These findings suggest that the dietary synbiotic supplement has significant performance and welfare benefits, with the potential to be used as an alternative to antibiotics for poultry meat production, especially during hot seasons.

Exceptional points and non-Hermitian photonics at the nanoscale

Exceptional points (EPs) arising in non-Hermitian systems have led to a variety of intriguing wave phenomena, and have been attracting increased interest in various physical platforms. In this Review, we highlight the latest fundamental advances in the context of EPs in various nanoscale systems, and overview the theoretical progress related to EPs, including higher-order EPs, bulk Fermi arcs and Weyl exceptional rings. We peek into EP-associated emerging technologies, in particular focusing on the influence of noise for sensing near EPs, improving the efficiency in asymmetric transmission based on EPs, optical isolators in nonlinear EP systems and novel concepts to implement EPs in topological photonics. We also discuss the constraints and limitations of the applications relying on EPs, and offer parting thoughts about promising ways to tackle them for advanced nanophotonic applications.
This Review discusses the latest theoretical progress related to exceptional points in non-Hermitian physics and the associated implications for emerging technologies in nanophotonics.

The Influence of Cecal Microbiota Transplantation on Chicken Injurious Behavior: Perspective in Human Neuropsychiatric Research

Numerous studies have evidenced that neuropsychiatric disorders (mental illness and emotional disturbances) with aggression (or violence) pose a significant challenge to public health and contribute to a substantial economic burden worldwide. Especially, social disorganization (or social inequality) associated with childhood adversity has long-lasting effects on mental health, increasing the risk of developing neuropsychiatric disorders. Intestinal bacteria, functionally as an endocrine organ and a second brain, release various immunomodulators and bioactive compounds directly or indirectly regulating a host’s physiological and behavioral homeostasis. Under various social challenges, stress-induced dysbiosis increases gut permeability causes serial reactions: releasing neurotoxic compounds, leading to neuroinflammation and neuronal injury, and eventually neuropsychiatric disorders associated with aggressive, violent, or impulsive behavior in humans and various animals via a complex bidirectional communication of the microbiota–gut–brain (MGB) axis. The dysregulation of the MGB axis has also been recognized as one of the reasons for the prevalence of social stress-induced injurious behaviors (feather pecking, aggression, and cannibalistic pecking) in chickens. However, existing knowledge of preventing and treating these disorders in both humans and chickens is not well understood. In previous studies, we developed a non-mammal model in an abnormal behavioral investigation by rationalizing the effects of gut microbiota on injurious behaviors in chickens. Based on our earlier success, the perspective article outlines the possibility of reducing stress-induced injurious behaviors in chickens through modifying gut microbiota via cecal microbiota transplantation, with the potential for providing a biotherapeutic rationale for preventing injurious behaviors among individuals with mental disorders via restoring gut microbiota diversity and function.

Research on the digital transaction model of the sports industry chain based on blockchain technology

The rapid digital transformation of the sports industry has opened up unprecedented opportunities for efficiency, transparency, and innovation. Traditional transaction models still suffer from significant challenges, including centralized control, lack of trust, and inefficiencies in revenue distribution. These issues often stem from reliance on intermediaries that introduce risks such as data manipulation, high operational costs, and delays in processing financial transactions. Blockchain technology presents a promising solution by enabling decentralized, secure, and transparent transactions, fostering greater trust among all stakeholders within the sports ecosystem. Existing approaches to digital transactions in the sports industry primarily depend on centralized financial institutions and third-party service providers, which not only limit transparency but also create barriers to financial inclusivity for athletes, clubs, sponsors, and fans. To address these critical limitations, we propose a blockchain-based digital transaction model that leverages smart contracts and distributed ledger technology (DLT) to enhance the efficiency, security, and fairness of transactions across the entire sports industry value chain. Our model integrates key economic principles with advanced network analysis to optimize revenue distribution, mitigate fraudulent activities, and enable real-time transaction verification. Through extensive simulations and empirical analysis, our results demonstrate a significant improvement in transaction speed, cost reduction, and overall transparency compared to conventional models. By decentralizing financial transactions, the proposed approach not only enhances financial inclusivity for all participants but also aligns with the broader vision of sustainable and equitable growth in the digital sports economy.

Bacillus subtilis-Based Probiotic Improves Skeletal Health and Immunity in Broiler Chickens Exposed to Heat Stress

The elevation of ambient temperature beyond the thermoneutral zone leads to heat stress, which is a growing health and welfare issue for homeothermic animals aiming to maintain relatively constant reproducibility and survivability. Particularly, global warming over the past decades has resulted in more hot days with more intense, frequent, and long-lasting heat waves, resulting in a global surge in animals suffering from heat stress. Heat stress causes pathophysiological changes in animals, increasing stress sensitivity and immunosuppression, consequently leading to increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut) and related neuroinflammation. Probiotics, as well as prebiotics and synbiotics, have been used to prevent or reduce stress-induced negative effects on physiological and behavioral homeostasis in humans and various animals. The current data indicate dietary supplementation with a Bacillus subtilis-based probiotic has similar functions in poultry. This review highlights the recent findings on the effects of the probiotic Bacillus subtilis on skeletal health of broiler chickens exposed to heat stress. It provides insights to aid in the development of practical strategies for improving health and performance in poultry.

DLCPD-25: A Large-Scale and Diverse Dataset for Crop Disease and Pest Recognition

The accurate identification of crop pests and diseases is critical for global food security, yet the development of robust deep learning models is hindered by the limitations of existing datasets. To address this gap, we introduce DLCPD-25, a new large-scale, diverse, and publicly available benchmark dataset. We constructed DLCPD-25 by integrating 221,943 images from both online sources and extensive field collections, covering 23 crop types and 203 distinct classes of pests, diseases, and healthy states. A key feature of this dataset is its realistic complexity, including images from uncontrolled field environments and a natural long-tail class distribution, which contrasts with many existing datasets collected under controlled conditions. To validate its utility, we pre-trained several state-of-the-art self-supervised learning models (MAE, SimCLR v2, MoCo v3) on DLCPD-25. The learned representations, evaluated via linear probing, demonstrated strong performance, with the SimCLR v2 framework achieving a top accuracy of 72.1% and an F1 score (Macro F1) of 71.3% on a downstream classification task. Our results confirm that DLCPD-25 provides a valuable and challenging resource that can effectively support the training of generalizable models, paving the way for the development of comprehensive, real-world agricultural diagnostic systems.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a synbiotic containing a probiotic (Enterococcus faecium, Pediococcus acidilactici, Bifidobacterium animalis, and Lactobacillus reuteri) and a prebiotic (fructooligosaccharides) on fear response, memory assessment, and selected stress indicators in broilers subjected to heat stress. A total of 360 1-day-old Ross 708 chicks were evenly divided among three treatments: a basal diet mixed with a synbiotic at 0 (G-C), 0.5 (G-0.5X), and 1.0 (G-1.0X) g/kg. After 15 d, the broilers were exposed to 32 °C for 9 h daily until 42 d. The object memory test was conducted at 15 day; touch, novel object, and isolation tests were conducted at 35 day; tonic immobility (TI) took place at 41 day. At 42 day, plasma corticosterone and tryptophan concentrations and heterophile/lymphocyte (H/L) ratios were measured. Compared to controls, synbiotic-fed broilers, regardless of concentration, had a shorter latency to make the first vocalization, with higher vocalization rates during the isolation test (p = 0.001). the G-1.0 group had the lowest H/L ratio (p = 0.001), but higher plasma tryptophan concentrations and a greater number of birds could reach the observer during the touch test (p = 0.001 and 0.043, respectively). The current results indicate that the synbiotic can be used as a growth promoter to reduce the fear response and stress state of heat-stressed broilers.

Efficacy and safety of cisplatin + docetaxel + 5-FU + leucovorin + methotrexate and epirubicin combination chemotherapy for advanced esophageal cancer

Esophageal cancer is a devastating disease. The cisplatin and 5-FU regimen is the most widely used concurrent chemoradiotherapy protocol for metastatic, unresectable advanced esophageal cancer in Asia. However, its effectiveness remains limited due to unsatisfactory outcomes. Therefore, we conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of Cisplatin + 5-FU combined with docetaxel, leucovorin, methotrexate, and epirubicin (CDFLME), a first-line multi-agent chemotherapy regimen used for the treatment of advanced esophageal cancer in Taiwan. We enrolled 94 patients in our study from January 2018 to June 2022. All patients were diagnosed with metastatic or unresectable advanced esophageal cancer. Among them, 81 patients received fluorouracil + cisplatin regimen serving as the control group, while 13 patients received the CDFLME combination regimen. Significant improvements were observed in the CDFLME group compared to the fluorouracil + cisplatin group in overall survival time, complete response rate, and disease control rate. No significant differences were noted in treatment-related deaths or grade 3–4 adverse events, except for grade 1–2 mucositis. Based on these findings, we conclude that the CDFLME regimen is a promising alternative treatment with relatively minor adverse events and is an effective protocol for patients with advanced esophageal cancer.
