New schools chief picked in District 15
[Robert McKanna], who will be paid $175,000 a year, has been superintendent of Warren Township High School District 121 in Gurnee since 1999. He also served as superintendent in New York, Massachusetts and Stevenson High School District 125 in Lincolnshire. Earlier in his career, he was an assistant superintendent, principal and math and science teacher.
Pupils get with program, earn honors for their robots
Four teams from School District 15 walked away with trophies. Gray Sanborn of Palatine team STRIPES won a Rookie of the Year award; the Quantum Knights from Sandburg Junior High School in Rolling Meadows won the award for teamwork; and the Thomas Jefferson Jaguars from Hoffman Estates and the Stuart R. Paddock Panthers of Palatine both won \"Against All Odds\" awards for overcoming obstacles in preparing their entry.

To get pupils excited about math and science, Conyers initiated a partnership with Northrop Grumman Corp. of Rolling Meadows to develop the Space Shuttle Project, Mission Control mobile classroom and Owen Garriott Discovery Learning Center. Another partnership with the Planetary Studies Foundation extended the classroom beyond the school when a teacher accompanied an expedition to Antarctica in 2000 and communicated with pupils via satellite.

This summer's cast members hail from not only Buffalo Grove, but also Chicago, Deerfield, Evanston, Highland Park, Niles, Northbrook, McHenry, Vernon Hills and Wheeling.

In the next two years the district will spend roughly $3.9 million on infrastructure improvements at Ned Brown/Busse Woods in Elk Grove Township, Crabtree Nature Center and Preserve in Barrington and South Barrington, Deer Grove Forest Preserve in Palatine, and Highland Woods Golf Course/Paul Douglas Preserve and Poplar Creek Preserve in Hoffman Estates.
