Development of a New Framework to Guide, Assess, and Evaluate Student Reflections in a University Sustainability Course

Many institutions of higher education increasingly place a focus on various forms of experiential education, including personal reflections. While much work has been done in this and related areas, the resources currently available are not sufficient to effectively guide, assess, and evaluate student learning through reflection. Guiding students through the process, assessing their work, and providing an evaluation presents challenges for educators. This article discusses a new framework, a robust rubric, and a guide that students and evaluators can use to support experiential learning through reflection. The framework and resources are based on a grounded investigation of student reflections that were compared to various models from the literature. The framework and resources discussed in the article were developed over a period of five years and with more than 1,600 students. Our purpose here is to describe the development of this framework, to provide a description of the rubric and guide, and to share the lessons learned. This framework and accompanying materials will, we hope, be a useful resource for educators and students wishing to support experiential learning through the use of reflection.

T-communities and Sense of Community in a University Town

An emerging interest in transport research concerns the factors that can help to create strong, sustainable and 'livable' communities; however, relatively limited empirical work has been conducted to date. In this paper the perception of sense of community among neighbourhood residents is investigated. Drawing from research on tertiary street-communities (t-communities), the paper explores the effect of the urban landscape, particularly street networks, and neighbourhood and individual characteristics on sense of community. A sample of students at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, is used for the analysis. In addition to providing an opportunity to study sense of community, a student sample is interesting in its own right, as students are often a component of essential but at times uneasy relations between universities and towns. Analysis is based on the application of an ordered probit model with a spatial lag. The results provide evidence thatt-community membership can influence sense of community.

Search for invisible Higgs-boson decays in events with vector-boson fusion signatures using 139 fb(-1) of proton-proton data recorded by the ATLAS experiment

A direct search for Higgs bosons produced via vector-boson fusion and subsequently decaying into invisible particles is reported. The analysis uses 139 fb(-1) of pp collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of root s =13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The observed numbers of events are found to be in agreement with the background expectation from Standard Model processes. For a scalar Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV and a Standard Model production cross section, an observed upper limit of 0.145 is placed on the branching fraction of its decay into invisible particles at 95% confidence level, with an expected limit of 0.103. These results are interpreted in the context of models where the Higgs boson acts as a portal to dark matter, and limits are set on the scattering cross section of weakly interacting massive particles and nucleons. Invisible decays of additional scalar bosons with masses from 50 GeV to 2 TeV are also studied, and the derived upper limits on the cross section times branching fraction decrease with increasing mass from 1.0 pb for a scalar boson mass of 50 GeV to 0.1 pb at a mass of 2 TeV.

Measurement of the properties of Higgs boson production at $\\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV in the $H\\to\\gamma\\gamma$ channel using $139$ fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data with the ATLAS experiment

Measurements of Higgs boson production cross-sections are carried out in the diphoton decay channel using 139 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at $\\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The analysis is based on the definition of 101 distinct signal regions using machine-learning techniques. The inclusive Higgs boson signal strength in the diphoton channel is measured to be $1.04^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$. Cross-sections for gluon-gluon fusion, vector-boson fusion, associated production with a $W$ or $Z$ boson, and top associated production processes are reported. An upper limit of 10 times the Standard Model prediction is set for the associated production process of a Higgs boson with a single top quark, which has a unique sensitivity to the sign of the top quark Yukawa coupling. Higgs boson production is further characterized through measurements of Simplified Template Cross-Sections (STXS). In total, cross-sections of 28 STXS regions are measured. The measured STXS cross-sections are compatible with their Standard Model predictions, with a $p$-value of 93%. The measurements are also used to set constraints on Higgs boson coupling strengths, as well as on new interactions beyond the Standard Model in an effective field theory approach. No significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed in these measurements, which provide significant sensitivity improvements compared to the previous ATLAS results.

Cerebrospinal fluid cytokine levels after surgery with spinal or general anesthesia

Background and Objectives. Studies show that pain may cause neuroinflammatory changes in the spinal cord. These inflammatory changes could be caused by circulating factors such as plasma cytokines or could be a primary neuroimmune response of the central nervous system following peripheral nerve injury. To identify the possible effects of peripheral trauma and pain on the cytokine environment of the spinal cord, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) concentrations in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were measured before and after hip replacement surgery.
Methods. The investigation used a prospective, observational design to measure cytokine levels in samples of plasma and CSF by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Samples were taken from surgical patients before and after surgery under general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia performed with or without a spinal catheter. Reference samples were also obtained from healthy control subjects.
Results. Both plasma and CSF levels of IL-6 increased substantially after major surgery with either general or spinal anesthesia. No significant correlation was observed between plasma IL-6 and CSF IL-6 levels, suggesting a central origin for increased CSF cytokine levels. IL-10 did not change in plasma or CSF after surgery. Plasma and CSF IL-6 and IL-10 cytokine levels were very low or undetectable in healthy controls.
Conclusions. Major orthopedic surgery leads to elevated CSF levels of the proinflammatory cytokine, IL-6. The origin of increased CSF IL-6 may be cnetral because there was no significant correlation with plasma levels.
