Changes in network centrality of psychopathology symptoms between the COVID-19 outbreak and after peak

The current study investigated the mechanism and changes in psychopathology symptoms throughout the COVID-19 outbreak and after peak. Two studies were conducted separately in China during outbreak and the after peak stages, with 2540 participants were recruited from February 6 to 16, 2020, and 2543 participants were recruited from April 25 to May 5, 2020. The network models were created to explore the relationship between psychopathology symptoms both within and across anxiety and depression, with anxiety measured by the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 and depression measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Symptom network analysis was conducted to evaluate network and bridge centrality, and the network properties were compared between the outbreak and after peak. Noticeably, psychomotor symptoms such as impaired motor skills, restlessness, and inability to relax exhibited high centrality during the outbreak, which still relatively high but showed substantial remission during after peak stage (in terms of strength, betweenness, or bridge centrality). Meanwhile, symptoms of irritability (strength, betweenness, or bridge centrality) and loss of energy (bridge centrality) played an important role in the network after the peak of the pandemic. This study provides novel insights into the changes in central features during the different COVID-19 stages and highlights motor-related symptoms as bridge symptoms, which could activate the connection between anxiety and depression. The results revealed that restrictions on movement were associated with worsen in psychomotor symptoms, indicating that future psychological interventions should target motor-related symptoms as priority.

Unpacking the Prison Food Paradox: Formerly Incarcerated Individuals’ Experience of Food within Federal Prisons in Canada
This paper presents findings from a survey conducted with formerly incarcerated individuals on their experiences of food and food systems within federal prisons in Canada. Beyond affirming the many problems with the quality and quantity of food provided to incarcerated individuals, the findings discussed in this article highlight the multi-faceted and paradoxical role of food behind bars. Food was a tool of punishment and a site of conflict, yet it simultaneously provides an important source of community and camaraderie. While there can be no “just” carceral food system because carceral systems are inherently unjust systems, a conversation about food provisioning within prison helps bring into focus opportunities to improve the material conditions of incarcerated individuals in the short-term as well as openings to question the logic and legitimacy of carceral institutions more broadly. As we are all bound-up in carceral food systems, there is a collective responsibility to interrogate and make visible the realities of carceral food systems in order to work towards non-carceral futures.

Effective nurse leadership enhances nurse welfare, improves patient care, and increases organisational success. A lack of adequate, supportive leadership significantly contributes to many nurses leaving the profession. Nurse managers need to prioritise engagement and retention as significant focus areas to address the nursing shortage in Saudi Arabia and accomplish the national program's objectives.
To examine the correlation between the leadership styles of clinical nurse managers and staff engagement.
This study used a descriptive, cross-sectional, correlational design. The leadership styles of clinical nurse managers were evaluated using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X). Work engagement was assessed using the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). Questionnaires were distributed to 450 nurses in four public hospitals in western Saudi Arabia. Non-probability convenience sampling was used to collect the data.
A total of 278 nurses from a range of clinical areas participated in the survey, which revealed that the leadership styles of clinical nurse managers positively or negatively impact nurse work engagement. Most clinical nurse managers exhibit transformational leadership, followed by transactional, then passive-avoidant styles. Respondents displayed a high level of work engagement, emphasising the positive impact of transformational and transactional leadership on work engagement outcomes. The findings showed significant differences in leadership styles and work engagement levels between Saudi and non-Saudi nurses across various dimensions.
Understanding the effect of leadership styles employed by nurse managers on work engagement can positively impact staff retention rates and the quality of patient care. Nurse managers should participate in training programs to enhance their practical leadership skills to enhance the work engagement levels of nurses.
Nurse work engagement can be improved by establishing training programs that promote effective leadership and highlight the significance of various leadership styles and their subsequent impact on nurse work engagement. Nursing students should receive education on leadership styles. Nursing leaders should be given access to mentoring programs and opportunities for career advancement to support the introduction of effective leadership styles.

Exploring registered nurses’ experiences and perceptions of nurse manager leadership and its impact on work engagement: A qualitative study set in Saudi Arabia

To explore nurses' perceptions of the impact of nurse managers' leadership practices on work engagement.
A qualitative descriptive study.
Thirteen (13) registered nurses were recruited from different departments in four referral hospitals in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis was conducted using NVivo-12 software. The findings were reported following the COREQ checklist.
Key themes included the impact of (1) fair, equitable, and culturally competent nurse managers, (2) effective communication styles by nurse managers, and (3) supportive and collaborative nurse managers. These elements have a positive impact on the level of nurse work engagement.
Nurse managers' leadership and interaction with their staff can impact nurses' sense of engagement in their work. Engaged nurses demonstrate higher levels of motivation, job satisfaction, and commitment, which can enhance patient care quality and workplace efficiency. The findings emphasise the importance of key leadership qualities, including cultural competence, effective communication, and supportive leadership, in fostering nurse engagement. These competencies not only improve staff motivation but also contribute to better patient outcomes. Future research should further explore the intersection of leadership practices and diverse cultural contexts to deepen the understanding of how culturally responsive leadership can enhance nurse engagement across various settings.
To enhance nurse engagement and patient care outcomes, nurse managers should develop their leadership skills, particularly in fairness, cultural competence, and communication. Nursing policymakers should prioritise these competencies in leadership training to foster a supportive workplace. Incorporating cultural competence into leadership training policies will help retain a motivated and diverse nursing workforce. Future research should explore interventions that further develop these leadership skills to improve nurse engagement and patient outcomes.

Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) are costly but preventable. A limited understanding of the effects of environmental cleaning on the riskiest HAI associated pathogens is a current challenge in HAI prevention. This project aimed to quantify the effects of terminal hospital cleaning practices on HAI pathogens via environmental sampling in three hospitals located throughout the United States. Surfaces were swabbed from 36 occupied patient rooms with a laboratory-confirmed, hospital- or community-acquired infection of at least one of the four pathogens of interest (i.e., Acinetobacter baumannii ( A . baumannii ), methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin resistant Enterococcus faecalis/faecium (VRE), and Clostridioides difficile ( C . difficile )). Six nonporous, high touch surfaces (i.e., chair handrail, bed handrail, nurse call button, desk surface, bathroom counter near the sink, and a grab bar near the toilet) were sampled in each room for Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) and the four pathogens of interest before and after terminal cleaning. The four pathogens of interest were detected on surfaces before and after terminal cleaning, but their levels were generally reduced. Overall, C . difficile was confirmed on the desk (n = 2), while MRSA (n = 24) and VRE (n = 25) were confirmed on all surface types before terminal cleaning. After cleaning, only MRSA (n = 6) on bed handrail, chair handrail, and nurse call button and VRE (n = 5) on bathroom sink, bed handrail, nurse call button, toilet grab bar, and C . difficile (n = 1) were confirmed. At 2 of the 3 hospitals, pathogens were generally reduced by >99% during terminal cleaning. One hospital showed that VRE increased after terminal cleaning, MRSA was reduced by 73% on the nurse call button, and VRE was reduced by only 50% on the bathroom sink. ATP detections did not correlate with any pathogen concentration. This study highlights the importance of terminal cleaning and indicates room for improvement in cleaning practices to reduce surface contamination throughout hospital rooms.

Prevalence of depression and its association with health-related quality of life in people with heart failure in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Heart failure is a growing public health concern around the world. People with heart failure have a high symptom burden, such as depression, which affects health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the pooled prevalence of depression and evaluate its association with HRQoL among people with heart failure in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the JBI methodology. Electronic databases such as MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus and JBI EBP were searched to identify relevant studies published from January 2012 to August 2022. The methodological quality of each article was assessed using relevant JBI critical appraisal instruments. A random-effects model was employed to estimate the pooled prevalence of depression. Heterogeneity across the studies was investigated using Cochrane's Q test and I2 statistic. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines 2020 were followed for reporting the results. All statistical analyses were performed using STATA version 17 software.
After screening, a total of 21 eligible articles with 5074 participants with heart failure were included in this review. The pooled prevalence of depression among people with heart failure in LMICs was 51.5% (95% CI = 39.7, 63.3%, I2 = 99.00%). Subgroup analysis revealed, the highest prevalence in studies whose participants were in-patients, and from the Middle East and North Africa, and studies utilizing Becks Depression Inventory (BDI). Depression was positively associated with HRQoL.
This review revealed that almost half of all people with heart failure in low- and middle-income countries have comorbid depression. People with heart failure and depressive symptoms had poor HRQoL. Therefore, early screening of depression is critical for improving HRQoL in this population. Systematic review registration: PROSPERO CRD42022361759.

Health-related quality of life and its influencing factors among people with heart failure in Ethiopia: using the revised Wilson and Cleary model

Heart failure is a challenging public health problem associated with poor health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Data on the quality of life of people with heart failure are limited in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess the HRQoL and its influencing factors in people with heart failure in Ethiopia. A hospital-based, cross-sectional study design was conducted in the cardiac outpatient clinics of two tertiary-level hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Data were collected from people with heart failure who met the inclusion criteria using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The HRQoL was measured using the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ). A multiple linear regression model was fitted to identify factors that influenced HRQoL. All statistical analyses were conducted using STATA version 17 software. A total of 383 people with heart failure participated in the study. The mean age of the participants was 55 years. The MLHFQ score was 48.03±19.73, and 54% of participants had poor HRQoL. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that age (β= 0.12, 95% CI 0.11, 0.28), diabetes mellitus comorbidity (β= 4.47, 95% CI 1.41, 7.54), social support score (β= − 1.48, 95% CI − 1.93, − 1.03), and depression score (β = 1.74, 95% CI 1.52, 1.96) were significant factors influencing overall HRQoL (p < 0.05). This study found that people in Ethiopia with heart failure had poor HRQoL, influenced by several factors. The findings can help health professionals identify appropriate interventions to improve the HRQoL of people with heart failure.

PurposeProgress toward health equity is necessary to reduce health disparities, and health literacy is key to achieving this goal. Because libraries provide access to knowledge and insights about their communities, they are effective partners in advancing health equity and implementing programs to reduce health disparities. A literature review on library programs and activities that focus on promoting health equity was conducted.Design/methodology/approachA literature review on library programs and activities concerning health equity and social determinants of health was conducted. Relevant literature was identified from searches of databases, library publications and grey literature.FindingsThe authors found 224 eligible sources and many types of libraries advancing health equity. Libraries frame their role in advancing health equity through external programs in three ways: (1) providing access to high-quality health information, (2) delivering health literacy training and resources and (3) connecting their communities with community health services. Libraries also advance health equity by focusing on internal library operations and providing research services focused on cultural humility and competence as they apply to health care.Originality/valueThis literature review will help the National Library of Medicine (NLM) develop a strategy to support libraries advancing health equity through information made available by programs and activities of NLM and the Network of the National Library of Medicine.

Reports of substance use in Zimbabwe paint a concerning picture of escalating prevalence of use, with over half of people admitted to inpatient mental health units reportedly experiencing a substance induced disorder. The country has gone through decades of significant political and socio-economical challenges, which are undoubtedly linked to the observed increases in substances use. Nevertheless, despite the resource constraints to adequately address substance use, the government has shown a renewed resolve to provide a comprehensive approach to address substance use in the country. However, there is a lack of clarity of the nature and extent of substance use and substance use disorders (SUDs), which in part is due to a lack of a national monitoring system for substance use in the country. Moreover, reports of a substance use crisis in Zimbabwe are predominantly based on anecdotal evidence, limiting the ability to gain an accurate picture of the situation. Therefore, a scoping review of the primary empirical evidence of substance use and SUDs is proposed in order to develop an adequately informed understanding of the nature of substance use and SUDs in Zimbabwe. Furthermore, the review will embed an assessment of the response to substance use, together with an analysis of the policy landscape on substance use in Zimbabwe. The PRISMA-ScR checklist will be utilised for the write up. The results of the scoping review will be essential for identifying the current state of knowledge around substance use, and identify gaps in knowledge and policy that would be a catalyst for further work to enhance knowledge and develop solutions situated within the local context. Thus the present work presents a timely effort that capitalises on current efforts by the government to address substance use in the country.

School health systems under strain: an example of COVID-19 experiences & burnout among school health staff in Pima County, Arizona

Background
School health staff lead and provide a variety of care for children in schools. As school districts have navigated the COVID-19 pandemic, school health staff have faced unprecedented challenges in protecting the health of students and school staff. Our objective was to qualitatively characterize these pandemic challenges and experiences of school health staff in Pima County, Arizona to identify gaps in school health staff support for improving future emergency preparedness.
Methods
We conducted two focus group discussions (FGDs) with 48 school health staff in Pima County, Arizona in two school districts using a discussion guide including ten open-ended questions. The FGDs were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. We used the socioecological model (SEM) to organize the thematic analysis and generate codes and themes; data were analyzed using Atlas.ti software.
Findings
The pandemic has significantly challenged school health staff with new pandemic-related job tasks: managing isolation, vaccination, and developing/implementing new and evolving COVID-19 guidelines. School health staff also reported increased stress related to interactions with parents and school administration as well as frustrations with rapid changes to guidance from the health department and policy makers. A common issue was not having enough staff or resources to complete regular job responsibilities, such as providing care for students with non-COVID-19 related health issues.
Conclusions
Increased workload for school health staff resulted in physical burnout, mental distress, and disruption of core functions with long term implications for children’s health. These focus groups highlight the need for improved emergency preparedness in schools during pandemics or infectious disease outbreaks. These include basic infrastructure changes (e.g., personnel support from health departments for tasks such as contact tracing to enable school nurses to continue core functions), and increased funding to allow for hazard pay and more school health personnel during emergency situations. In addition, basic school health infrastructure is lacking, and we should include a licensed school health nurse in every school.
