Synergetic and Orthogonal Switching in Dual Photochromic Metal-Organic Frameworks
2024
Cooperative behavior and orthogonal responses of two classes of coordinatively integrated photochromic molecules towards distinct external stimuli were demonstrated on the first example of a photo-thermo-responsive hierarchical platform. Synergetic and orthogonal responses to temperature and excitation wavelength are achieved by confining the stimuli-responsive moieties within a metal-organic framework (MOF), leading to the preparation of a novel photo-thermo-responsive spiropyran-diarylethene based material. Synergistic behavior of two photoswitches enables the study of stimuli-responsive resonance energy transfer as well as control of the photoinduced charge transfer processes, milestones required to advance optoelectronics development. Spectroscopic studies in combination with theoretical modeling revealed a nonlinear effect on the material electronic structure arising from the coordinative integration of photoresponsive molecules with distinct photoisomerization mechanisms. Thus, this thesis covers multivariable facets of not only fundamental aspects of photoswitch cooperativity, but also provides a pathway to modulate photophysics and electronics of multidimensional functional materials exhibiting thermo-photochromism.

Purpose. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the lived experiences of middle and high school classified staff members in Victorville, California, and to describe their training, knowledge, observations, and perceptions of African American family engagement.Methodology. This study employed a phenomenological approach to explore the lived experiences of classified staff members and their perspectives on African American family engagement. Criterion-based sampling was used to identify five participants who were interviewed using a guided, semi-structured interview protocol.Findings. Four themes and 21 formulated concepts emerged. The four themes were conceptualizing family engagement, the benefits of family engagement, stereotypes, and staff opportunities. The essence of the perceptions of classified staff members on African American family engagement was provided.Conclusions. Intervention strategies that empower school staff members to integrate parent engagement efforts in their school system should be implemented. Devised interventions should eliminate barriers to adequate conditions for culturally diverse groups and improve access to cultural capital.Recommendations. Further research could include a larger sample size or include other methods that allow for generalization to a larger population. Studies exploring diverse student perspectives on family engagement should be conducted. Additional research could also explore the resources that are available to staff members that might foster positive relationships with diverse families and school staff. Future studies could also include research with African American families to identify their perspectives. Finally, the researcher recommends that a mixed-method or quantitative study could be completed to explore how to measure effective family engagement.

The relationship between violent behavior against women and other members of the family and alcohol consumption is currently a social problem with legal repercussions. The most frequent is to see an alcoholic man execute violent actions against women; data at the global level show that this is not a problem that covers all countries, regardless of their economic or technological development. That being the case, there are many studies that affirm that, it is the family nucleus, the place where the greatest number of aggressions against women occur, regardless of age, condition, race, culture and economic condition.

Taking on the perspective of the other: Understanding parents' and teachers' perceptions of parent involvement in students' educational experiences
Parent involvement is considered a vital educational factor that is associated with students‘ academic success. Engaging parents in the educational process is a challenge confronting many school districts across the United States. This is a significant problem for schools in low socioeconomic communities where lack of resources for parents and teachers creates barriers to involvement initiatives. This qualitative study analyzes how low socioeconomic parents‘ perceptions of their involvement with their elementary children compare to the expectations, experiences, and perceptions of teachers. The findings are drawn from original, in-depth focus group discussions with a sample of elementary school teachers and low SES parents. As teachers and parents revealed their views and experiences pertaining to parent involvement, deeper understandings evolved of what it means to be either a parent or a teacher. Parents emphasized wanting to be involved and active at the school, whereas teachers stressed their frustration with parents who were not present at school or at home and who did not support teachers‘ educational efforts. Although parent participants struggled with life stressors, they also discussed their efforts to overcome those stressors and work with their children. Teachers stressed their desire to have parents engage in parenting activities, such as providing adequate health-care and discipline. Both teachers and parents believe in positive communication between home and school; however parents who aggressively advocate for their children are seen as negative participants by the school. Parents want to volunteer at the school, but teachers revealed concerns about parents with skill deficits. School safety and the overall school climate was a concern for many of the parents. All participants suggested actions that the school could take to promote collaboration, understanding, and stronger parent involvement, including professional development for teachers, having more staff in the building, and engaging in more empowering conversations and actions between teachers and parents. A comparison of the findings from teachers and parents revealed some divergent perspectives on the concept of parent involvement, what it means to be involved, and what involvement looks like at Emerson School. These findings suggest that the experiences of both parents and teachers, including life context, role adherence, and teacher-parent interactions, have shaped their conceptualizations of what parent involvement means to them. The accounts of both parents and teachers have provided a more authentic picture of parent involvement as it relates to their individual lives.

Symptomatic hydrocephalus after subarachnoid haemorrhage seems to result both from mechanical obstruction of arachnoid villi and basilar cisterns and from an inflammatory cellular reaction in the villi. Subarachnoid haemorrhage was induced in rabbits using whole blood injected through an implanted intraventricular needle. Control rabbits receiving intraventricular methyl prednisolone acetate but no blood, developed ventricular dilation significantly more often than untreated controls. Eighty-three per cent of rabbits with untreated experimental subarachnoid haemorrhage developed moderate to severe hydrocephalus. Intramuscular steroid therapy significantly reduced the incidence of hydrocephalus.

Why seals fail
2003
* It's not a good idea to have a third party rebuild your mechanical seals. It's better to have the company or manufacturer that sold it to you do the rebuilding because: the third party doesn't own the molds for your carbon/graphite face; machined carbons don't have the density required for good seal faces; and you can't tell by looking at the part that you've got the right grade of elastomer.
