Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) are twice as likely as nondiabetic individuals to develop depression, which is a prevalent but often undiagnosed psychiatric comorbidity. Patients with DM who are depressed have poor glycemic control, worse quality of life, increased risk of diabetic complications, and higher mortality rate. The present study aimed to develop machine learning (ML) models that identify depression in patients with DM, determine the best performing model by evaluating multiple ML algorithms, and investigate features related to depression. We developed six ML models, including random forest, K-nearest neighbor, support vector machine (SVM), Adaptive Boosting, light gradient-boosting machine, and Extreme Gradient Boosting, based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The results showed that the SVM model performed well, with a cross-validated area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.835 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.730–0.901). Thirteen features were related to depression in patients with DM. Permutation feature importance showed that the most important feature was subjective health status, followed by level of general stress awareness; stress recognition rate; average monthly income; triglyceride (mg/dL) level; activity restriction status; European quality of life (EuroQoL): usual activity and lying in a sickbed in the past 1 month; EuroQoL: pain / discomfort, self-care, and physical discomfort in the last 2 weeks; and EuroQoL: mobility and chewing problems. The current findings may offer clinicians a better understanding of the relationship between DM and depression using ML approaches and may be an initial step toward developing a more predictive model for the early detection of depressive symptoms in patients with DM.

The present study aimed to investigate the longitudinal influence of physical education classes, extracurricular sports activities, and leisure satisfaction on aggressive behavior among South Korean adolescents. Data were drawn from the Korea Youth Panel Survey. We used latent growth curve modeling to explain the growth trajectory of adolescent aggressive behaviors and a multi-group analysis to investigate gender differences in aggressive behavior. The results indicated that adolescents' aggressive behavior significantly changed with age. There were significant gender-based differences in the level of and changes in aggressive behavior over time. Both extracurricular sports activities and leisure satisfaction had significant influences on the changes in adolescents' aggressive behavior with age, whereas physical education classes did not.

is an emerging multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen that poses a significant global health threat. Since its discovery in 2009, has rapidly spread worldwide, causing severe infections with high mortality rates, particularly in healthcare settings. Its ability to persist in the environment, form biofilms, and resist multiple antifungal drugs underscores the urgent need to understand its pathogenicity mechanisms and associated signaling pathways. Such insights are crucial for elucidating its unique virulence traits and developing targeted therapeutic strategies. Current studies have identified several key pathways involved in its pathogenicity and antifungal drug resistance. The Ras/cAMP/PKA pathway regulates critical virulence factors, including thermotolerance, morphological plasticity, and biofilm formation. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and calcineurin pathways contribute to stress responses and antifungal drug resistance. The regulation of Ace2 and morphogenesis (RAM) pathway influences cell aggregation, while the target of rapamycin (TOR) pathway affects filamentous growth and biofilm development. However, the distinct characteristics of , such as its rapid environmental spread and clade-specific traits, warrant further investigation into additional signaling pathways. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of known signaling pathways associated with pathogenicity and antifungal drug resistance, integrating insights from other fungal pathogens. By synthesizing current knowledge and identifying research gaps, this review offers new perspectives on future research directions and potential therapeutic targets against this formidable pathogen.

The present research explored the dynamics of competitive advantages in intercollegiate athletics by investigating the contribution of intangible resources (i.e., athletic and academic reputations) on the generation of more tangible resources (i.e., human and financial resources), which in turn influence the athletic performance (i.e., winning record) and academic performance (i.e., graduation rates), and gender equity. The research was based entirely on archival data of 324 NCAA Division I member institutions. The results of the SEM supported the study's basic arguments that tangible resources are the sources of competitive advantages in Division I intercollegiate athletics, and that intangible resources contribute to the generation of tangible resources.

Candida auris , an emerging fungal pathogen characterized by its multidrug resistance and high mortality rates, poses a significant public health challenge. Despite its importance, the signaling pathways governing virulence and antifungal resistance in C. auris remain poorly understood. This study investigates the calcineurin pathway in C. auris , critical for virulence and antifungal resistance in other fungal pathogens. Calcineurin, a calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein phosphatase, comprises a catalytic subunit (Cna1) and a regulatory subunit (Cnb1) in C. auris . Our findings reveal that deletion of CNA1 or CNB1 disrupts extreme thermotolerance and cell membrane and wall integrity, leading to increased susceptibility to azoles and echinocandins. Moreover, we identified a downstream transcription factor, Crz1, which plays a central role in this pathway in other fungal species. Deletion of CRZ1 resulted in thermotolerance and membrane integrity defects comparable to those of cna1 Δ and cnb1 Δ mutants, along with increased azole susceptibility. Supporting it, fluconazole treatment induced Crz1 nuclear translocation in a Cna1-dependent manner. However, unlike cna1 Δ and cnb1 Δ mutants, the crz1 Δ mutant displayed increased resistance to echinocandins, suggesting the opposing roles for Crz1 in regulating cell wall integrity. Nevertheless, echinocandins also promoted Crz1 nuclear translocation via Cna1, underscoring the complex regulatory mechanisms at play. Cna1 was found to be required for virulence in both the Drosophila systemic infection model and the murine skin infection model. However, in a systemic murine infection model, both calcineurin and Crz1 appeared dispensable for C. auris virulence. Our findings highlight that the evolutionarily conserved calcineurin pathway employs distinct regulatory mechanisms to perform divergent roles in regulating extreme thermotolerance, cell wall and membrane integrity, antifungal drug resistance, and virulence in C. auris .

The purpose of the current study was to meta-analytically investigate the psychological impacts of physical activity for the elderly population in Korea. The findings from 21 studies, using the comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA) program, indicated that participation in physical activity had a low, but meaningful, impact on the subjective well-being of elderly individuals. Of three exercise dose components, the duration of physical activity was the most influential, followed by the frequency and intensity of the physical activity. Of six subjective well-being measures, self-efficacy was most strongly associated with physical activity, followed by life satisfaction, leisure satisfaction, exercise satisfaction, successful aging, and happiness. Results of moderator analyses indicated that the influence of physical activity became more pronounced as the proportion of males increased. Meanwhile, of the three exercise dose components, only the relationship between the duration and subjective well-being was influenced as the percentage of participants without a spouse or partner increased. Overall, regular participation in physical activity is an effective way of promoting subjective well-being among older adults in Korea. Relevant guidelines regarding physical activity prescription and behavioral management strategies are discussed.

This study aimed to examine users’ experiences of using running applications. A total of 20,243 online reviews posted by running-application users were collected from the Google Play Store. The data were analyzed using Leximancer to conduct the qualitative content analysis. The software identified six themes of running-app users’ experiences: “app”, “use”, “track”, “free”, “ads”, and “support”. Moreover, the results showed that users were generally positive toward the usefulness of running applications’ functions. The findings of this study help designers better understand running-application users’ experience and improve running applications’ features in order to optimize users’ exercise experience.

PurposeThe current study extends the technology acceptance model (TAM) and information system success model (ISSM) to the context of branded sport applications. Specifically, the study examined the influences of app system success dimensions and TAM determinants on branded sport app usage intention. Moreover, the current study examined the gender differences regarding the relative importance of the drivers and predictors of usage intention.Design/methodology/approachData collection (n = 256) was conducted using convenience sampling in South Korea. The data were primarily analyzed via partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), multi-group analysis and importance–performance map analysis (IPMA) using SmartPLS 3.0.FindingsApp users who viewed branded sport apps as having a higher level of system and information quality were likely to have stronger perceptions of enjoyment, usefulness, and ease of use. Among the TAM determinants, perceived enjoyment most significantly influenced their usage intention, followed by perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Multigroup analysis revealed that some relationships between app system success dimensions and TAM determinants were significantly different by gender. In addition, IPMA indicated that perceived enjoyment and system quality of branded sport apps were relatively more important than the other predictors.Originality/valueThe current study contributes to the literature by incorporating both TAM and ISSM and extending the TAM with the perceived enjoyment construct to examine the key determinants of usage intention in the context of branded sport apps.

The current study investigated what influences college students’ behavioral intention and behavior towards sports gambling using the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as a theoretical framework. The study also explored the moderation effect of problem gambling severity in the relationships between TPB determinants, behavioral intention, and sports gambling behavior. Data were collected from 334 college students from four different universities in the U.S. and analyzed through partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and multi-group analysis. The results indicated that attitude was the most critical determinant of college students’ sports gambling intentions, followed by the subjective norms, while both behavioral intention and perceived behavioral control were significant predictors of sports gambling behavior. The study also found some meaningful moderation effects of problem gambling severity. Subjective norms were influential on college students with greater problem gambling severity, while attitude was the strongest predictor of recreational sports gamblers. Suggestions on prevention and treatment programs regarding sports gambling and problem gambling are discussed.
