Pharmacological effects and mechanisms of bee venom and its main components: Recent progress and perspective
Bee venom (BV), a type of defensive venom, has been confirmed to have favorable activities, such as anti-tumor, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-infectivity effects, etc. This study reviewed the recent progress on the pharmacological effects and mechanisms of BV and its main components against cancer, neurological disorders, inflammatory diseases, pain, microbial diseases, liver, kidney, lung and muscle injury, and other diseases in literature during the years 2018–2021. The related target proteins of BV and its main components against the diseases include Akt, mTOR, JNK, Wnt-5α, HIF-1α, NF-κB, JAK2, Nrf2, BDNF, Smad2/3, AMPK, and so on, which are referring to PI3K/Akt/mTOR, MAPK, Wnt/β-catenin, HIF-1α, NF-κB, JAK/STAT, Nrf2/HO-1, TrkB/CREB/BDNF, TGF-β/Smad2/3, and AMPK signaling pathways, etc. Further, with the reported targets, the potential effects and mechanisms on diseases were bioinformatically predicted via Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway, disease ontology semantic and enrichment (DOSE) and protein-protein interaction (PPI) analyses. This review provides new insights into the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of BV and its main components on diseases.
Construction of an Emotional Lexicon of Patients With Breast Cancer: Development and Sentiment Analysis
The innovative method of sentiment analysis based on an emotional lexicon shows prominent advantages in capturing emotional information, such as individual attitudes, experiences, and needs, which provides a new perspective and method for emotion recognition and management for patients with breast cancer (BC). However, at present, sentiment analysis in the field of BC is limited, and there is no emotional lexicon for this field. Therefore, it is necessary to construct an emotional lexicon that conforms to the characteristics of patients with BC so as to provide a new tool for accurate identification and analysis of the patients' emotions and a new method for their personalized emotion management. This study aimed to construct an emotional lexicon of patients with BC. Emotional words were obtained by merging the words in 2 general sentiment lexicons, the Chinese Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (C-LIWC) and HowNet, and the words in text corpora acquired from patients with BC via Weibo, semistructured interviews, and expressive writing. The lexicon was constructed using manual annotation and classification under the guidance of Russell's valence-arousal space. Ekman's basic emotional categories, Lazarus' cognitive appraisal theory of emotion, and a qualitative text analysis based on the text corpora of patients with BC were combined to determine the fine-grained emotional categories of the lexicon we constructed. Precision, recall, and the F1-score were used to evaluate the lexicon's performance. The text corpora collected from patients in different stages of BC included 150 written materials, 17 interviews, and 6689 original posts and comments from Weibo, with a total of 1,923,593 Chinese characters. The emotional lexicon of patients with BC contained 9357 words and covered 8 fine-grained emotional categories: joy, anger, sadness, fear, disgust, surprise, somatic symptoms, and BC terminology. Experimental results showed that precision, recall, and the F1-score of positive emotional words were 98.42%, 99.73%, and 99.07%, respectively, and those of negative emotional words were 99.73%, 98.38%, and 99.05%, respectively, which all significantly outperformed the C-LIWC and HowNet. The emotional lexicon with fine-grained emotional categories conforms to the characteristics of patients with BC. Its performance related to identifying and classifying domain-specific emotional words in BC is better compared to the C-LIWC and HowNet. This lexicon not only provides a new tool for sentiment analysis in the field of BC but also provides a new perspective for recognizing the specific emotional state and needs of patients with BC and formulating tailored emotional management plans.
Lotus Bee Pollen Extract Inhibits Isoproterenol-Induced Hypertrophy via JAK2/STAT3 Signaling Pathway in Rat H9c2 Cells
Bee pollen possesses an anti-cardiomyocyte injury effect by reducing oxidative stress levels and inhibiting inflammatory response and apoptosis, but the possible effect mechanism has rarely been reported. This paper explores the effect of the extract of lotus bee pollen (LBPE) on cardiomyocyte hypertrophy (CH) and its mechanism. The main components of LBPE were identified via UPLC-QTOF MS. An isoproterenol-induced rat H9c2 CH model was subsequently used to evaluate the protection of LBPE on cells. LBPE (100, 250 and 500 μg∙mL−1) reduced the surface area, total protein content and MDA content, and increased SOD activity and GSH content in CH model in a dose-dependent manner. Meanwhile, quantitative real-time PCR trials confirmed that LBPE reduced the gene expression levels of CH markers, pro-inflammatory cytokines and pro-apoptosis factors, and increased the Bcl-2 mRNA expression and Bcl-2/Bax ratio in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, target fishing, bioinformatics analysis and molecular docking suggested JAK2 could be a pivotal target protein for the main active ingredients in the LBPE against CH. Ultimately, Western blot (WB) trials confirmed that LBPE can dose-dependently inhibit the phosphorylation of JAK2 and STAT3. The results show that LBPE can protect against ISO-induced CH, possibly via targeting the JAK2/STAT3 pathway, also suggesting that LBPE may be a promising candidate against CH.
Fabrication and properties of 1-3-2 multi-element piezoelectric composite
A design method is presented for 1-3-2 type multi-element piezoelectric composite so as to provide basis for the development and study of transducer and transducer array. The composite samples have been fabricated by a twice dice-filling process from lead zirconate titanate (PZT-4), epoxy resin and silicone, the properties of the composites have been measured and investigated physically. The results show that the piezoelectric, dielectric and electromechanical coupling properties of the composite exhibit a good consistency, while it has a high thickness electromechanical coupling factor K t and a wide bandwidth of pulse-echo signal. The impedance plot of every element indicates good behavior that all elements show excellent frequency consistency, and on the other hand the chance of coupling of lateral resonance and thickness resonance is very small, and with a clear thickness resonance mode at around 100 kHz. Silicon has extremely decoupling properties which can efficiently block the transmission of the acoustic vibrations and eliminate coupling effect among elements. And the farther the distance between the incentive element and receiving element is, the smaller the response signal become, while the response signal decay rate exhibits the trend of increase, the largest up to 95%.
Effect of CeO2 Doping on Properties of PCrNi-4 Piezoelectric Ceramics
The piezoelectric ceramic Pb 0.94 Sr 0.06 (Zr 0.53 Ti 0.47 )O 3  + 0.1 wt% (Ni 2 O 3  + Cr 2 O 3 ) +  x  wt%CeO 2 (PCrNi-4) was prepared using a traditional solid state sintered method. The effects of CeO 2 doping on phase structure, microstructure, piezoelectric, and dielectric properties were analyzed by means of XRD, SEM, and electrical property measurements. The results indicate that when CeO 2 doping content is 0.3 wt% and sintering temperature is 1,280 °C, the dielectric loss value of the ceramic is the least with a value of 0.00238, and the dielectric factor , piezoelectric strain factor d 33 , planar electromechanical coupling coefficient K p and mechanical quality factor Q m of the ceramic is 1400, 375 pCN −1 , 0.68, and 460, respectively.
Microstructure and electrical properties of NaNbO3-BaTiO3 lead-free piezoelectric ceramics
Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics (1 − x) NaNbO3-xBaTiO3 have been fabricated by a traditional ceramic sintering technique. The effects of BaTiO3 (BT) synthesized by hydrothermal method on crystal structure, density, dielectric, piezoelectric, and electromechanical properties were investigated. Results show that the phase structure transforms from the orthorhombic phase to the tetragonal phase with the increase of the content of BT, and the two phases co-exist when 0.08<×⩽0.10. However, the optimum composition for (1 − x)NaNbO3-xBaTiO3 ceramics is 0.90NaNbO3-0.10BaTiO3. The 0.90NaNbO3-0.10BaTiO3 ceramics sintered at 1250°C have higher properties: piezoelectric constant d33 of 120 pC/N, dielectric constant ετ of 718, planar electromechanical coupling factor kp of 24%, planar frequency Nd of 3 MHz·mm, and the mechanical quality factor Qm of 138, respectively. The results show that the (1−x)NaNbO3-xBaTiO3 ceramics is one of the promising lead-free materials for high-frequency applications.
A study on polarization properties of the carbon black modified 0-3 cement-based piezoelectric composites
A carbon black modified 0–3 cement-based piezoelectric composite was fabricated with piezoelectric ceramic [0.08Pb(Li1/4Nb3/4)O•0.47PbTiO3•0.45PbZrO3], sulphoaluminate cement and carbon black by compressing technique. The influences of poling conditions on the piezoelectric and dielectric properties of the composites were investigated. The results show that the higher poling electric field, the longer poling time and the higher poling temperature, the composites have the higher piezoelectric strain factor d33, piezoelectric voltage factor g33, dielectric constant εr and dielectric loss tanδ. At the same time, the carbon black modified composites are polarized more easily than the unmodified composites, and have better piezoelectric and dielectric properties. Meanwhile, the optimum poling conditions were obtained, and the optimum poling field E, poling time t and poling temperature T were 4 kV/mm, 20 min and 80 °C.
CD147-spike protein is a novel route for SARS-CoV-2 infection to host cells
In face of the everlasting battle toward COVID-19 and the rapid evolution of SARS-CoV-2, no specific and effective drugs for treating this disease have been reported until today. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), a receptor of SARS-CoV-2, mediates the virus infection by binding to spike protein. Although ACE2 is expressed in the lung, kidney, and intestine, its expressing levels are rather low, especially in the lung. Considering the great infectivity of COVID-19, we speculate that SARS-CoV-2 may depend on other routes to facilitate its infection. Here, we first discover an interaction between host cell receptor CD147 and SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. The loss of CD147 or blocking CD147 in Vero E6 and BEAS-2B cell lines by anti-CD147 antibody, Meplazumab, inhibits SARS-CoV-2 amplification. Expression of human CD147 allows virus entry into non-susceptible BHK-21 cells, which can be neutralized by CD147 extracellular fragment. Viral loads are detectable in the lungs of human CD147 (hCD147) mice infected with SARS-CoV-2, but not in those of virus-infected wild type mice. Interestingly, virions are observed in lymphocytes of lung tissue from a COVID-19 patient. Human T cells with a property of ACE2 natural deficiency can be infected with SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus in a dose-dependent manner, which is specifically inhibited by Meplazumab. Furthermore, CD147 mediates virus entering host cells by endocytosis. Together, our study reveals a novel virus entry route, CD147-spike protein, which provides an important target for developing specific and effective drug against COVID-19.
