Chronotype is associated with eating behaviors, physical activity and overweight in school-aged children
Background A later chronotype has been found to be associated with unhealthy habits and diseases, such as an unhealthy diet and metabolic syndrome in adults. Little is known about the association between chronotype, eating habits, physical activity and obesity. Thus, this study aimed to explore the relationships between chronotype, eating behaviors, physical activity, and overweight in Chinese school-aged children. Methods Data from this study was based on 952 schoolchildren (10–12 y) from six primary schools that participated in China. Anthropometric measurements of height and body weight were performed. Information about sleeping habits, dietary behaviors, and other lifestyle behaviors was gathered using a self-administered questionnaire. Multiple linear regression analysis or multivariable logistic regression model was performed to assess the associations between chronotype, eating behaviors, physical activity, and overweight. Results Nearly 70% (69.9%) of the participants had a self-reported morning chronotype. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed chronotype score was positively associated with physical activities (all P values < 0.001) and sleep duration (all P values < 0.001) and negatively associated with BMI, meal time, eating jet lag and social jet lag (all P values < 0.001). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that compared to morning types, non-morning types individuals were more likely to be overweight (OR = 1.593, P value < 0.05), and had more frequent consumption of fast food (OR = 1.616, P value < 0.05), but less frequent consumption of milk (OR = 0.716, P value < 0.05), less time taking part in moderate (OR = 1.356, P value < 0.05) or muscle strengthening (OR = 1.393, 1.877, P value < 0.05) physical activity. Conclusions This study indicates that early chronotype children are more active, have healthier dietary habits, get more sleep, have shorter social jet lag, and are less likely to be overweight than non-early chronotype children. Our findings suggest that later chronotype may be a potential indicator in the early detection of overweight, unhealthy eating, and physical inactivity behaviors. Plain english summary Chronotype has been found to have an important impact on individual’s health. In the present study, we conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the association between chronotype, eating behaviors, physical activity, and overweight in school-aged children. The findings showed that children with early chronotype is associated with more active, healthier dietary behaviors, longer sleep duration, short social jet lag, and a lower risk of overweight.
The association between non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio with type 2 diabetes mellitus: recent findings from NHANES 2007–2018
Objective This study aims to assess the relationship between NHHR (non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio) and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in US adults, using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2007 to 2018. Methods This study explored the connection between NHHR and T2DM by analyzing a sample reflecting the adult population of the United States ( n  = 10,420; NHANES 2007–2018). NHHR was characterized as the ratio of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. T2DM was defined based on clinical guidelines. This research used multivariable logistic models to examine the connection between NHHR and T2DM. Additionally, it included subgroup and interaction analyses to assess variations among different groups. Generalized additive models, smooth curve fitting, and threshold effect analysis were also employed to analyze the data further. Results The study included 10,420 subjects, with 2160 diagnosed with T2DM and 8260 without. The weighted multivariate logistic regression model indicated an 8% higher probability of T2DM for each unit increase in NHHR (OR: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.01–1.15) after accounting for all covariates. Subgroup analysis outcomes were uniform across various categories, demonstrating a significant positive relationship between NHHR and T2DM. Interaction tests showed that the positive link between NHHR and T2DM remained consistent regardless of age, body mass index, smoking status, moderate recreational activities, hypertension, or stroke history, with all interaction P -values exceeding 0.05. However, participants’ sex appeared to affect the magnitude of the connection between NHHR and T2DM (interaction P -value < 0.05). Also, a nonlinear association between NHHR and T2DM was discovered, featuring an inflection point at 1.50. Conclusions Our study suggests that an increase in NHHR may be correlated with a heightened likelihood of developing T2DM. Consequently, NHHR could potentially serve as a marker for estimating the probability of T2DM development.
The association between weight loss behaviors and body weight perception in Chinese adolescents: 2007–2022
Background Weight misperceptions are common in children and adolescents, which is related to the engagement of weight loss behaviors. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between body weight perception and weight loss behaviors of lower-calorie diets and increased levels of physical activity (PA). Methods The Ningbo Youth Risk Behavior Survey was conducted from 2007 to 2022. A multistage, stratified cluster sampling procedure was utilized to draw target adolescents aged 12 to 18 years participating in each survey wave (2007, 2012, 2017, 2022). Data of anthropometry, weight perception, and weight loss behaviors were collected through self-administered questionnaires. A binary generalized linear model was used to examine associations between body weight perception and weight loss behaviors of lower calorie diets and increased levels of PA. Results The sample sizes for each survey wave were 777, 885, 1588 and 2638. The prevalence of overweight (OW)/obesity (OB), self-perception of OW/OB and overestimated perception increased from 7.6%, 27.0% and 29.1% in 2007 to 16.3%, 39.9% and 41.4% in 2022, respectively. Adolescents that perceived themselves as OW/OB had higher odds of lower-calorie diets (OR: 4.2, 3.3–5.4) and increased level of PA (OR: 3.8, 2.9-5.0), whereas adolescents that perceived themselves as underweight had lower odds of lower-calorie diets (OR: 0.371, 0.253–0.542) and increased levels of PA (OR: 0.381, 0.295–0.559). Conclusion OW, self-perception of OW/OB and overestimated perception were prevalent in Chinese adolescents. Self-perception of OW/OB was positively associated with lower-calorie diets and increased levels of PA. The results can support public health specialists to promote health education of body perception and improve self-esteem in Chinese children and adolescents.
Efficient Red/Near‐Infrared‐Emissive Carbon Nanodots with Multiphoton Excited Upconversion Fluorescence
Red/near‐infrared (NIR) emissive carbon nanodots (CNDs) with photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) of 57% are prepared via an in situ solvent‐free carbonization strategy for the first time. 1‐Photon and 2‐photon cellular imaging is demonstrated by using the CNDs as red/NIR fluorescence agent due to the high PL QY and low biotoxicity. Further study shows that the red/NIR CNDs exhibit multiphoton excited (MPE) upconversion fluorescence under excitation of 800–2000 nm, which involves three NIR windows (NIR‐I, 650–950 nm; NIR‐II, 1100–1350; NIR‐III, 1600–1870 nm). 2‐Photon, 3‐photon, and 4‐photon excited fluorescence of the CNDs under excitation of different wavelengths is achieved. This study develops an in situ solvent‐free carbonization method for efficient red/NIR emissive CNDs with MPE upconversion fluorescence, which may push forward the application of the CNDs in bioimaging. Red/near‐infrared (NIR) emissive carbon nanodots (CNDs) with photoluminescence quantum yield of 57% are demonstrated via an in situ solvent‐free strategy. 1‐Photon and 2‐photon cellular imaging is demonstrated. Furthermore, multiphoton excited red/NIR fluorescence of the CNDs is achieved.
Loneliness mediates the association between sleep deficiency and fighting in school-aged adolescents: a 2-year longitudinal study
Sleep deficiency is becoming increasingly common among adolescents and may lead to aggressive behaviour. This study investigated the association between sleep deficiency and fighting among 1946 school-aged adolescents (mean age: 12.2 ± 0.47 years) in Ningbo city through a two-year longitudinal study and explored the mediating roles of loneliness, sadness, and nervousness. A total of 552 (28.3%) reported sleep deficiency at baseline. During the follow-up period, 347 (17.8%) adolescents engaged in fighting. Sleep deficiency was significantly associated with an increased likelihood of fighting (OR: 1.91, 95% CI: 1.45–2.52) after adjusting for confounders. Compared with boys, girls with sleep deficiency presented a greater risk of fighting (OR: 2.61, 95% CI: 1.44–4.73 for girls; OR: 1.74, 95% CI: 1.27–2.39 for boys). This association persists among adolescents with unhealthy lifestyles. Loneliness partially mediated this relationship (indirect effect β  = 0.013, P  < 0.05, effect ratio = 12.26%), whereas sadness and nervousness had no significant mediating effect. Studies have shown that sleep deficiency independently predicts adolescent fighting behaviour, with loneliness playing a key mediating role. Interventions that improve sleep hygiene, reduce loneliness, and address lifestyle likelihood factors may help reduce violent behaviour in adolescents.
Association between alcohol consumption and metabolic syndrome among Chinese adults
To assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Chinese adults living in Ningbo and to examine the association between alcohol consumption and MetS and its medical components. A representative survey in Ningbo was conducted in 2015 covering socio-demography. A FFQ together with additional questionnaires was used to collect information on alcohol consumption, diet, demography, lifestyle and medical information. Multivariable logistic regression and generalised linear models were used to examine the association between alcohol consumption and both MetS and its medical components, respectively. Ningbo, China. A total of 2853 adults ≥ 20 years (44 % men) in this final analysis. The prevalence of frequent alcohol drinkers and MetS was 29·9 % and 28·0 %, respectively. Significantly higher prevalence of MetS and mean values of medical components were found in the group of frequent alcohol drinkers with an exception for HDL-cholesterol, compared with less or non-alcohol drinkers. Frequent alcohol consumption was associated with higher odds of developing MetS and positively associated with medical components excepting waist circumference. Frequent alcohol consumption contributed to a higher prevalence of MetS and unfavourable influence on MetS and its medical components among Chinese adults. A public health intervention on alcohol restriction is necessary for the prevention and control of the ongoing epidemic MetS.
The prognostic significance of stress hyperglycemia ratio in evaluating all-cause and cardiovascular mortality risk among individuals across stages 0–3 of cardiovascular–kidney–metabolic syndrome: evidence from two cohort studies
Background The American Heart Association (AHA) proposed the concept of cardiovascular–kidney–metabolic (CKM) syndrome, underscoring the interconnectedness of cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic diseases. The stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR) represents an innovative indicator that quantifies blood glucose fluctuations in patients experiencing acute or subacute stress, correlating with detrimental clinical effects. Nevertheless, the prognostic significance of SHR within individuals diagnosed with CKM syndrome in stages 0 to 3, particularly with respect to all-cause or cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality risks, has not been fully understood yet. Methods The current study analyzed data from 9647 participants with CKM syndrome, covering stages 0 to 3, based on the NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) collected from 2007 to 2018. In this study, the primary exposure variable was the SHR, computed as fasting plasma glucose divided by (1.59 * HbA1c − 2.59). The main endpoints of study were all-cause mortality as well as CVD mortality, with death registration data sourced through December 31, 2019. The CHARLS database (China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study) was utilized as validation to enhance the reliability of the findings. Results This study included 9647 NHANES participants, who were followed for a median duration of 6.80 years. During this period, 630 all-cause mortality cases and 135 CVD-related deaths in total were recorded. After full adjustment for covariates, our results displayed a robust positive association of SHR with all-cause mortality (Hazard ratio [HR] = 1.09, 95% Confidence interval [CI] 1.04–1.13). However, the SHR exhibited no significant relationship with CVD mortality (HR = 1.00, 95% CI 0.91–1.11). The mediation analysis results suggested that the relationship between SHR and all-cause mortality risk is partially mediated by RDW, albumin, and RAR. Specifically, the mediating effects were − 17.0% (95% CI − 46.7%, − 8.7%), − 10.1% (95% CI − 23.9%, − 4.7%), and − 23.3% (95% CI − 49.0%, − 13.0%), respectively. Additionally, analyses of the CHARLS database indicated a significant positive correlation between SHR and all-cause mortality among individuals diagnosed with CKM across stages 0–3 during the follow-up period from 2011 to 2020. Conclusions An increased SHR value is positively associated with an elevated likelihood of all-cause mortality within individuals diagnosed with CKM syndrome across stages 0–3, yet it shows no significant association with CVD mortality. SHR is an important tool for predicting long-term adverse outcomes in this population. Impact of metabolic syndrome on bone mineral density in men over 50 and postmenopausal women according to U.S. survey results
Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and bone mineral density (BMD) have shown a controversial link in some studies. This research aims to study their association in males over 50 and postmenopausal females using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data. Postmenopausal females and males over 50 were included in the study. MetS was defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines. BMD values were measured at the thoracic spine, lumbar spine, and pelvis as the primary outcome. Weighted multivariate general linear models have been employed to explore the status of BMD in patients with MetS. Additionally, interaction tests and subgroup analyses were conducted. Utilizing the NHANES database from 2003 to 2006 and 2011–2018, we included 1924 participants, with 1029 males and 895 females. In postmenopausal women, after adjusting for covariates, we found a positive correlation between MetS and pelvic (β: 0.030 [95%CI 0.003, 0.06]) and thoracic (β: 0.030 [95%CI 0.01, 0.06]) BMD, though not for lumbar spine BMD (β: 0.020 [95%CI − 0.01, 0.05]). In males over 50 years old, MetS was positively correlated with BMD in both Model 1 (without adjusting for covariates) and Model 2 (considering age and ethnicity). Specifically, Model 2 revealed a positive correlation between MetS and BMD at the pelvis (β: 0.046 [95%CI 0.02, 0.07]), thoracic spine (β: 0.047 [95%CI 0.02, 0.07]), and lumbar spine (β: 0.040 [95%CI 0.02, 0.06]). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that the relationship between MetS and BMD remained consistent in all strata, underscoring the stability of the findings. In postmenopausal women, after adjusting for all covariates, a significant positive correlation was observed between MetS and BMD in the pelvis and thoracic spine, whereas this correlation was not significant for lumbar spine BMD. Conversely, in males, positive correlations between MetS and BMD at the lumbar spine, thoracic spine, and pelvis were identified in Model 2, which adjusted for age and ethnicity; however, these correlations disappeared after fully adjusting for all covariates. These findings highlight the potential moderating role of gender in the impact of MetS on BMD.
A review of the fernane-type triterpenoids as anti-fungal drugs
Human fungal pathogens could cause a broad plethora of infections in both the immunocompetent and immunocompromised host. Fungal infections have become important causes of morbidity and mortality in recent years, the current arsenal of anti-fungal therapies was restricted. Ibrexafungerp was a novel, highly bioavailable glucan synthase inhibitor formulated for both intravenous and oral administration being developed by Scynexis; it was also the first novel anti-fungal drug class approved in more than 20 years. Ibrexafungerp was one semi-synthetic derivative of enfumafungin, a natural product isolated from fungi. This review reported the discovery of enfumafungin and ibrexafungerp, their anti-fungal mechanism, summed up 63 fernane-type triterpenoids from natural products, including 49 from plants, 9 from fungi and 5 from lichen. In addition, the review summarized the progress of enzymes responsible for the biosynthesis of type II fernane triterpenoid (enfumafungin skeleton) and type I fernane triterpenoid (polytolypin skeleton). The good example kept our confidence up for searching for new leading compounds and discovering drugs from fungi.
Effect of “green technology-institution” collaborative innovation on ecological efficiency—the moderating role of fiscal decentralization
With the tightening of resource constraints and the proposal of the Chinese High-quality Development strategy, innovation-driven has emerged as a new option to balance economic progress with environmental protection. The paper takes Chinese inter-provincial panel data from 2007 to 2017 as a research sample and is based on a spatial Durbin model, investigating the association among green technology innovation (GTI), “green technology-institution” collaborative innovation, and ecological efficiency (EE), while fiscal decentralization is discussed as a moderating factor. According to the results, “green technology-institution” collaborative innovation is positively promoting ecological efficiency and causing spatial spillovers if the economic distance is taken into account. Compared with the single role of green technology innovation, collaborative innovation has a greater role in improving ecological efficiency. Among them, to improve ecological efficiency, it is best to develop green technology innovation and encourage production institutions in a coordinated manner. According to the moderating effect, fiscal decentralization moderates the impact of innovation collaboration on ecological efficiency in a negative way. Therefore, balancing the decentralization of local fiscal expenditures is important to promoting China’s ecological efficiency. In addition, China should purposefully promote the degree of synergy between green technology innovation and related institutions for enhancing eco-efficiency.
