Web-based virtual environments for decision support in water systems
\"Water management is a complex process dealing with a wide range of often conflicting considerations. Especially in flood risk assessment and disaster management, stakeholder involvment is an important component in the decision making process. How to integrate different information sources and how to present them in such a way that even non-experts can capture the situation in a relatively short time and take decisions--that is the overall objective of this research. ... Case study applications focus on the role of 3D information in river delta development, flood disaster management and coastal protection. Implications for next-generation decision support systems are outlined.\"--Back cover.
Realguard: A Lightweight Network Intrusion Detection System for IoT Gateways
2022
Cyber security has become increasingly challenging due to the proliferation of the Internet of things (IoT), where a massive number of tiny, smart devices push trillion bytes of data to the Internet. However, these devices possess various security flaws resulting from the lack of defense mechanisms and hardware security support, therefore making them vulnerable to cyber attacks. In addition, IoT gateways provide very limited security features to detect such threats, especially the absence of intrusion detection methods powered by deep learning. Indeed, deep learning models require high computational power that exceeds the capacity of these gateways. In this paper, we introduce Realguard, an DNN-based network intrusion detection system (NIDS) directly operated on local gateways to protect IoT devices within the network. The superiority of our proposal is that it can accurately detect multiple cyber attacks in real time with a small computational footprint. This is achieved by a lightweight feature extraction mechanism and an efficient attack detection model powered by deep neural networks. Our evaluations on practical datasets indicate that Realguard could detect ten types of attacks (e.g., port scan, Botnet, and FTP-Patator) in real time with an average accuracy of 99.57%, whereas the best of our competitors is 98.85%. Furthermore, our proposal effectively operates on resource-constraint gateways (Raspberry PI) at a high packet processing rate reported about 10.600 packets per second.

Full-color emissive carbon dots (CDs) hold a great promise for various applications, especially in light emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the existing synthetic routes for CDs are carried out in solutions, which suffer from low yields, high pressures, various byproducts, large amounts of waste solvents, and complicated photoluminescence (PL) origins. Therefore, it is necessary to explore large scale synthesis of CDs with high quantum yield (QY) across the entire visible range from a single carbon source by a solvent-free method. In this work, a series of CDs with tunable PL emission from 442 to 621 nm, QY of 23%–56%, and production yield within 34%–72%, are obtained by heating o-phenylenediamine with the catalysis of KCl. Detailed characterizations identify that, the differences between these CDs with respect to the graphitization degree, graphitic nitrogen content, and oxygen-containing functional groups, are responsible for their distinct optical properties, which can be modulated by controlling the deamination and dehydrogenation processes during reactions. Blue, green, yellow, red emissive films, and LEDs are prepared by dispersing the corresponding CDs into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). All types of white LEDs (WLEDs) with high colorrendering- index (CRI), including warm WLEDs, standard WLEDs, and cool WLEDs, are also fabricated by mixing the red, green, and blue emissive CDs into PVA matrix by the appropriate ratios.

2021
A microneedle (MN) is a painless and minimally invasive drug delivery device initially developed in 1976. As microneedle technology evolves, microneedles with different shapes (cone and pyramid) and forms (solid, drug-coated, hollow, dissolvable and hydrogel-based microneedles) have been developed. The main objective of this review is the applications of microneedles in biomedical areas. Firstly, the classifications and manufacturing of microneedle are briefly introduced so that we can learn the advantages and fabrications of different MNs. Secondly, research of microneedles in biomedical therapy such as drug delivery systems, diagnoses of disease, as well as wound repair and cancer therapy are overviewed. Finally, the safety and the vision of the future of MNs are discussed.

Pan-cancer analysis of NUP155 and validation of its role in breast cancer cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis
2024
NUP155
is reported to be correlated with tumor development. However, the role of
NUP155
in tumor physiology and the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) has not been previously examined. This study comprehensively investigated the expression, immunological function, and prognostic significance of
NUP155
in different cancer types. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that
NUP155
was upregulated in 26 types of cancer. Additionally,
NUP155
upregulation was strongly correlated with advanced pathological or clinical stages and poor prognosis in several cancers. Furthermore,
NUP155
was significantly and positively correlated with DNA methylation, tumor mutational burden, microsatellite instability, and stemness score in most cancers. Additionally,
NUP155
was also found to be involved in TIME and closely associated with tumor infiltrating immune cells and immunoregulation-related genes. Functional enrichment analysis revealed a strong correlation between
NUP155
and immunomodulatory pathways, especially antigen processing and presentation. The role of
NUP155
in breast cancer has not been examined. This study, for the first time, demonstrated that
NUP155
was upregulated in breast invasive carcinoma (BRCA) cells and revealed its oncogenic role in BRCA using molecular biology experiments. Thus, our study highlights the potential value of
NUP155
as a biomarker in the assessment of prognostic prediction, tumor microenvironment and immunotherapeutic response in pan-cancer.

Emotions and Information Diffusion in Social Media-Sentiment of Microblogs and Sharing Behavior
2013
As a new communication paradigm, social media has promoted information dissemination in social networks. Previous research has identified several content-related features as well as user and network characteristics that may drive information diffusion. However, little research has focused on the relationship between emotions and information diffusion in a social media setting. In this paper, we examine whether sentiment occurring in social media content is associated with a user's information sharing behavior. We carry out our research in the context of political communication on Twitter. Based on two data sets of more than 165,000 tweets in total, we find that emotionally charged Twitter messages tend to be retweeted more often and more quickly compared to neutral ones. As a practical implication, companies should pay more attention to the analysis of sentiment related to their brands and products in social media communication as well as in designing advertising content that triggers emotions.
