From the Great Wall to Wall Street : a cross-cultural look at leadership and management in China and the US
Wei Yen explores how differences in world views between Eastern and Western thought and culture affect management and leadership behaviors. In The Geography of Thought, Richard Nisbett showed how the thought and culture of the East is rooted in Chinese Confucian ideals, while that of the West goes back to the early Greeks. In From Great Wall to Wall Street, Wei Yen explores how these differences impact today's leadership and management practices. He delves deeply into the two cultures and their philosophical roots, and explains why there can exist significant misunderstandings between the two camps. Yen was born in China, raised in Hong Kong, educated both there and in the US and then spent half his working life in the US and half in Asia. From his vantage point, straddling both cultures he compares and contrasts the pragmatic, wholistic Chinese (or Asian) management style with the rational and analytical Western management style. He shows their pros and cons, the areas where they differ and situations where one may be more successful than the other. Yen argues that understanding traditional Chinese culture, and how it affects management behaviors and current events, can help decision makers make better decisions in business, finance and politics.
Molecular mechanisms underlying the antidepressant actions of arketamine: beyond the NMDA receptor

The discovery of robust antidepressant actions exerted by the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist (R,S)-ketamine has been a crucial breakthrough in mood disorder research. (R,S)-ketamine is a racemic mixture of equal amounts of (R)-ketamine (arketamine) and (S)-ketamine (esketamine). In 2019, an esketamine nasal spray from Johnson & Johnson was approved in the United States of America and Europe for treatment-resistant depression. However, an increasing number of preclinical studies show that arketamine has greater potency and longer-lasting antidepressant-like effects than esketamine in rodents, despite the lower binding affinity of arketamine for the NMDAR. In clinical trials, non-ketamine NMDAR-related compounds did not exhibit ketamine-like robust antidepressant actions in patients with depression, despite these compounds showing antidepressant-like effects in rodents. Thus, the rodent data do not necessarily translate to humans due to the complexity of human psychiatric disorders. Collectively, the available studies indicate that it is unlikely that NMDAR plays a major role in the antidepressant action of (R,S)-ketamine and its enantiomers, although the precise molecular mechanisms underlying antidepressant actions of (R,S)-ketamine and its enantiomers remain unclear. In this paper, we review recent findings on the molecular mechanisms underlying the antidepressant actions of (R,S)-ketamine and its potent enantiomer arketamine. Furthermore, we discuss the possible role of the brain–gut–microbiota axis and brain–spleen axis in stress-related psychiatric disorders and in the antidepressant-like action of arketamine. Finally, we discuss the potential of arketamine as a treatment for cognitive impairment in psychiatric disorders, Parkinson’s disease, osteoporosis, inflammatory bowel diseases, and stroke.

Designable ultra-smooth ultra-thin solid-electrolyte interphases of three alkali metal anodes

Dendrite growth of alkali metal anodes limited their lifetime for charge/discharge cycling. Here, we report near-perfect anodes of lithium, sodium, and potassium metals achieved by electrochemical polishing, which removes microscopic defects and creates ultra-smooth ultra-thin solid-electrolyte interphase layers at metal surfaces for providing a homogeneous environment. Precise characterizations by AFM force probing with corroborative in-depth XPS profile analysis reveal that the ultra-smooth ultra-thin solid-electrolyte interphase can be designed to have alternating inorganic-rich and organic-rich/mixed multi-layered structure, which offers mechanical property of coupled rigidity and elasticity. The polished metal anodes exhibit significantly enhanced cycling stability, specifically the lithium anodes can cycle for over 200 times at a real current density of 2 mA cm
–2
with 100% depth of discharge. Our work illustrates that an ultra-smooth ultra-thin solid-electrolyte interphase may be robust enough to suppress dendrite growth and thus serve as an initial layer for further improved protection of alkali metal anodes.

Ancient China and its Eurasian neighbors : artifacts, identity and death in the frontier, 3000-700 BCE
\"This volume examines the role of objects in the region north of early dynastic state centers, at the intersection of Ancient China and Eurasia, a large area that stretches from Xinjiang to the China Sea, from c.3000 BCE to the mid-eighth century BCE. Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), including unmanned vehicles, has been gradually matured despite on road. How to eliminate the interference due to various environmental factors, carry out accurate and efficient traffic sign detection and recognition, is a key technical problem. However, traditional visual object recognition mainly relies on visual feature extraction, e.g., color and edge, which has limitations. Convolutional neural network (CNN) was designed for visual object recognition based on deep learning, which has successfully overcome the shortcomings of conventional object recognition. In this paper, we implement an experiment to evaluate the performance of the latest version of YOLOv5 based on our dataset for Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), which unfolds how the model for visual object recognition in deep learning is suitable for TSR through a comprehensive comparison with SSD (i.e., single shot multibox detector) as the objective of this paper. The experiments in this project utilize our own dataset. Pertaining to the experimental results, YOLOv5 achieves 97.70% in terms of mAP@0.5 for all classes, SSD obtains 90.14% mAP in the same term. Meanwhile, regarding recognition speed, YOLOv5 also outperforms SSD.

يتناول كتاب (مبادئ الحكم في الصين القديمة) والذي قامه بتأليفه (وي تشينغ) في حوالي (211) صفحة من القطع المتوسط موضوع (تاريخ الصين قديم) مستعرضا المحتويات التالية : قبل أكثر من ألف وربعمائة عام، أصدر الإمبراطور تاي تسونغ إمبراطور أسرة تانغ الملكية (618-907) مرسوما بأن يجمع أربعة من أشهر علماء الصين وسياسييها وأمهرهم وقتها المعارف التاريخية حول مبادئ الحكم الإمبراطوري من الكتب الكلاسيكية القديمة الستة، والمجموعات التاريخية الأربع، والمئات من مؤلفات المدارس الفكرية الصينية، وأن يرتبوها ويستخرجوا منها الدروس الاكثر اهمية حول تهذيب النفس وإصلاحها، وإدارة العائلة، والحكم الجيد للبلاد، وسبل جلب السلام للعالم. وكانت النتيجة مجموعة عنوانها \"تشيونشو تشيياو\" التي أقتبست بعناية من أربعة عشر ألف كتاب، وتسع وثمانين ألف مخطوطة من الكتابات القديمة، بإجمالي خمسمائة ألف فقرة مكتوبة، تغطي خمسة وشتين صنفا من الكتب. وقد ساعد هذا الكتاب الإمبراطور تاي سونغ والكثير من الأباطرة من بعده في أمور الحكم، ويعود الفضل في تحقيق الرخاء والسلام في المراحل اللاحقة بالصين القديمة بنسبة كبيرة إلى هذا الكتاب.
UAV-DETR: An Enhanced RT-DETR Architecture for Efficient Small Object Detection in UAV Imagery

To mitigate the technical challenges associated with small-object detection, feature degradation, and spatial-contextual misalignment in UAV-acquired imagery, this paper proposes UAV-DETR, an enhanced Transformer-based object detection model designed for aerial scenarios. Specifically, UAV imagery often suffers from feature degradation due to low resolution and complex backgrounds and from semantic-spatial misalignment caused by dynamic shooting conditions. This work addresses these challenges by enhancing feature perception, semantic representation, and spatial alignment. Architecturally extending the RT-DETR framework, UAV-DETR incorporates three novel modules: the Channel-Aware Sensing Module (CAS), the Scale-Optimized Enhancement Pyramid Module (SOEP), and the newly designed Context-Spatial Alignment Module (CSAM), which integrates the functionalities of contextual and spatial calibration. These components collaboratively strengthen multi-scale feature extraction, semantic representation, and spatial-contextual alignment. The CAS module refines the backbone to improve multi-scale feature perception, while SOEP enhances semantic richness in shallow layers through lightweight channel-weighted fusion. CSAM further optimizes the hybrid encoder by simultaneously correcting contextual inconsistencies and spatial misalignments during feature fusion, enabling more precise cross-scale integration. Comprehensive comparisons with mainstream detectors, including Faster R-CNN and YOLOv5, demonstrate that UAV-DETR achieves superior small-object detection performance in complex aerial scenarios. The performance is thoroughly evaluated in terms of mAP@0.5, parameter count, and computational complexity (GFLOPs). Experiments on the VisDrone2019 dataset benchmark demonstrate that UAV-DETR achieves an mAP@0.5 of 51.6%, surpassing RT-DETR by 3.5% while reducing the number of model parameters from 19.8 million to 16.8 million.
