The Image Transformation and Literary Writing of Buddhist Temples in Northern Wei Luoyang
This article examines the functional transformation of Buddhist temples from religious edifices to elements of the political landscape in Northern Wei Luoyang, in order to elucidate the grandiose portrayal of these temples in geographical records. The proliferation of Buddhism significantly altered the spatial configuration of the capital city, previously dominated by imperial architectural complexes. Buddhist temples emerged as emblematic structures of Luoyang, surpassing palaces in prominence due to their extensive occupation of urban space, enhancement of the empire’s international standing, and involvement in the political vicissitudes of Northern Wei. Yang Xuanzhi drew upon the literary techniques of Han fu 漢賦, particularly its elaborate descriptive style, to articulate the sentiments of the emperor’s subjects and extol the ruler’s virtue while subtly conveying criticism and advice. By shaping Buddhist temples into imperial landscapes, Yang Xuanzhi conferred on Luoyang a legitimacy comparable to that of the Han Dynasty. The evolving social functions and literary representations of Buddhist temples during the Northern Wei Dynasty reflect the profound integration of Buddhism, politics, and literature.
Mechanisms and management of 3rd-generation EGFR-TKI resistance in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (Review)
Targeted therapy with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) is a standard modality of the 1st-line treatments for patients with advanced EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and substantially improves their prognosis. However, EGFR T790M mutation is the primary mechanism of 1st- and 2nd-generation EGFR-TKI resistance. Osimertinib is a representative of the 3rd-generation EGFR-TKIs that target T790M mutation, and has satisfactory efficacy in the treatment of T790M-positive NSCLC with disease progression following use of 1st- or 2nd-generation EGFR-TKIs. Other 3rd-generation EGFR-TKIs, such as abivertinib, rociletinib, nazartinib, olmutinib and alflutinib, are also at various stages of development. However, the occurrence of acquired resistance is inevitable, and the mechanisms of 3rd-generation EGFR-TKI resistance are complex and incompletely understood. Genomic studies in tissue and liquid biopsies of resistant patients reveal multiple candidate pathways. The present review summarizes the recent findings in mechanisms of resistance to 3rd-generation EGFR-TKIs in advanced NSCLC, and provides possible strategies to overcome this resistance. The mechanisms of acquired resistance mainly include an altered EGFR signaling pathway (EGFR tertiary mutations and amplification), activation of aberrant bypassing pathways (hepatocyte growth factor receptor amplification, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 amplification and aberrant insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor activation), downstream pathway activation (RAS/RAF/MEK/ERK and PI3K/AKT/mTOR) and histological/phenotypic transformations (SCLC transformation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition). The combination of targeted therapies is a promising strategy to treat osimertinib-resistant patients, and multiple clinical studies on novel combined therapies are ongoing.

Gut microbiota-derived propionate mediates the neuroprotective effect of osteocalcin in a mouse model of Parkinson’s disease
Background Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with no absolute cure. The evidence of the involvement of gut microbiota in PD pathogenesis suggests the need to identify certain molecule(s) derived from the gut microbiota, which has the potential to manage PD. Osteocalcin (OCN), an osteoblast-secreted protein, has been shown to modulate brain function. Thus, it is of interest to investigate whether OCN could exert protective effect on PD and, if yes, whether the underlying mechanism lies in the subsequent changes in gut microbiota. Results The intraperitoneal injection of OCN can effectively ameliorate the motor deficits and dopaminergic neuronal loss in a 6-hydroxydopamine-induced PD mouse model. The further antibiotics treatment and fecal microbiota transplantation experiments confirmed that the gut microbiota was required for OCN-induced protection in PD mice. OCN elevated Bacteroidetes and depleted Firmicutes phyla in the gut microbiota of PD mice with elevated potential of microbial propionate production and was confirmed by fecal propionate levels. Two months of orally administered propionate successfully rescued motor deficits and dopaminergic neuronal loss in PD mice. Furthermore, AR420626, the agonist of FFAR3, which is the receptor of propionate, mimicked the neuroprotective effects of propionate and the ablation of enteric neurons blocked the prevention of dopaminergic neuronal loss by propionate in PD mice. Conclusions Together, our results demonstrate that OCN ameliorates motor deficits and dopaminergic neuronal loss in PD mice, modulating gut microbiome and increasing propionate level might be an underlying mechanism responsible for the neuroprotective effects of OCN on PD, and the FFAR3, expressed in enteric nervous system, might be the main action site of propionate.
EM and SAGE Algorithms for DOA Estimation in the Presence of Unknown Uniform Noise
The existing expectation maximization (EM) and space-alternating generalized EM (SAGE) algorithms are only applied to direction of arrival (DOA) estimation in known noise. In this paper, the two algorithms are designed for DOA estimation in unknown uniform noise. Both the deterministic and random signal models are considered. In addition, a new modified EM (MEM) algorithm applicable to the noise assumption is also proposed. Next, these EM-type algorithms are improved to ensure the stability when the powers of sources are not equal. After being improved, simulation results illustrate that the EM algorithm has similar convergence with the MEM algorithm, the SAGE algorithm outperforms the EM and MEM algorithms for the deterministic signal model, and the SAGE algorithm cannot always outperform the EM and MEM algorithms for the random signal model. Furthermore, simulation results show that processing the same snapshots from the random signal model, the SAGE algorithm for the deterministic signal model can require the fewest computations.
Swin-Transformer-Based YOLOv5 for Small-Object Detection in Remote Sensing Images
This study aimed to address the problems of low detection accuracy and inaccurate positioning of small-object detection in remote sensing images. An improved architecture based on the Swin Transformer and YOLOv5 is proposed. First, Complete-IOU (CIOU) was introduced to improve the K-means clustering algorithm, and then an anchor of appropriate size for the dataset was generated. Second, a modified CSPDarknet53 structure combined with Swin Transformer was proposed to retain sufficient global context information and extract more differentiated features through multi-head self-attention. Regarding the path-aggregation neck, a simple and efficient weighted bidirectional feature pyramid network was proposed for effective cross-scale feature fusion. In addition, extra prediction head and new feature fusion layers were added for small objects. Finally, Coordinate Attention (CA) was introduced to the YOLOv5 network to improve the accuracy of small-object features in remote sensing images. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed method was demonstrated by several kinds of experiments on the DOTA (Dataset for Object detection in Aerial images). The mean average precision on the DOTA dataset reached 74.7%. Compared with YOLOv5, the proposed method improved the mean average precision (mAP) by 8.9%, which can achieve a higher accuracy of small-object detection in remote sensing images.
