Tunable positions of Weyl nodes via magnetism and pressure in the ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlSi
The noncentrosymmetric ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlSi with simultaneous space-inversion and time-reversal symmetry breaking provides a unique platform for exploring novel topological states. Here, by employing multiple experimental techniques, we demonstrate that ferromagnetism and pressure can serve as efficient parameters to tune the positions of Weyl nodes in CeAlSi. At ambient pressure, a magnetism-facilitated anomalous Hall/Nernst effect (AHE/ANE) is uncovered. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements demonstrated that the Weyl nodes with opposite chirality are moving away from each other upon entering the ferromagnetic phase. Under pressure, by tracing the pressure evolution of AHE and band structure, we demonstrate that pressure could also serve as a pivotal knob to tune the positions of Weyl nodes. Moreover, multiple pressure-induced phase transitions are also revealed. These findings indicate that CeAlSi provides a unique and tunable platform for exploring exotic topological physics and electron correlations, as well as catering to potential applications, such as spintronics. Topological semimetals with space-inversion and time-reversal symmetry breaking have attracted attention recently. Here, using a combination of experimental techniques and calculations, the authors demonstrate the tunability of the Weyl nodes via magnetism and pressure in the ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlSi.
Destabilization of the Charge Density Wave and the Absence of Superconductivity in ScV6Sn6 under High Pressures up to 11 GPa
RV6Sn6 (R = Sc, Y, or rare earth) is a new family of kagome metals that have a similar vanadium structural motif as AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) compounds. Unlike AV3Sb5, ScV6Sn6 is the only compound among the series of RV6Sn6 that displays a charge density wave (CDW) order at ambient pressure, yet it shows no superconductivity (SC) at low temperatures. Here, we perform a high-pressure transport study on the ScV6Sn6 single crystal to track the evolutions of the CDW transition and to explore possible SC. In contrast to AV3Sb5 compounds, the CDW order of ScV6Sn6 can be suppressed completely by a pressure of about 2.4 GPa, but no SC is detected down to 40 mK at 2.35 GPa and 1.5 K up to 11 GPa. Moreover, we observed that the resistivity anomaly around the CDW transition undergoes an obvious change at ~2.04 GPa before it vanishes completely. The present work highlights a distinct relationship between CDW and SC in ScV6Sn6 in comparison with the well-studied AV3Sb5.
Soil Salinity Prediction in an Arid Area Based on Long Time-Series Multispectral Imaging
Traditional soil salinity measurement methods are generally complex and labor-intensive, restricting the long-term monitoring of soil salinity, particularly in arid areas. In this context, the soil salt content (SSC) data from farms in the Heihe River Basin in Northwest China were collected in three consecutive years (2021, 2022, and 2023). In addition, the spectral reflectance and texture features of different sampling sites in the study area were extracted from long-term unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multispectral images to replace the red and near-infrared bands with a newly introduced red edge band. The spectral index was calculated in this study before using four sensitive variable combinations to predict soil salt contents. A Pearson correlation analysis was performed in this study to screen 57 sensitive features. In addition, 36 modeling scenarios were conducted based on the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost Implemented using R language 4.3.1), Backpropagation Neural Network (BPNN), and Random Forest (RF) algorithms. The most optimal algorithms for predicting the soil salt contents in farmland located in the Heihe River Basin, in the arid region of Northwest China, were determined. The results showed a higher prediction accuracy for the XGBoost algorithm than the RF and BPNN algorithms, accurately reflecting the actual soil salt contents in the arid area. On the other hand, the most accurate predicted soil salt contents were obtained in 2023 using the XGBoost algorithm, with coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE) ranges of 0.622–0.820, 0.086–0.157, and 0.078–0.134, respectively, whereas the most stable prediction results were obtained using the collected data in 2022. From the perspective of different sensitive variable input combinations, the implementation of the XGBoost algorithm using the spectral index–spectral reflectance–texture feature input combination resulted in comparatively higher prediction accuracies than those of the other variable combinations in 2022 and 2023. Specifically, the R2, RMSE, and MAE values obtained using the spectral index–spectral reflectance–texture feature input combination were 0.674, 0.133, and 0.086 in 2022 and 0.820, 0.165, and 0.134 in 2023, respectively. Therefore, our results demonstrated that the spectral index–spectral reflectance–texture feature was the optimal sensitive variable input combination for the machine learning algorithms, of which the XGBoost algorithm is the most optimal model for predicting soil salt contents. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for the rapid and accurate prediction of soil salinity in arid areas.
The Impact of lncRNA Dysregulation on Clinicopathology and Survival of Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Dysregulation of multiple long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) was reported to play major roles in breast cancer (BC). Here we aimed to collect most of the relevant literature to assess the prognostic value of lncRNAs in BC. To this end, we systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang to identify published articles on the associations of lncRNAs with clinicopathology and/or survival of BC. Via this searching, we identified 70 articles involving 9,307 BC patients and regarding 48 lncRNAs. The expression of 41 lncRNAs was related to one or more clinicopathological parameters of BC, including tumor size; lymph node metastasis; histological grade; TNM stage; and estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2) statuses (p < 0.05). Dysregulation of 28 lncRNAs was associated with overall survival, and abnormal expression of 9 lncRNAs was linked to disease-free survival. Furthermore, the expression level of 3 lncRNAs was correlated with metastasis-free survival, 3 lncRNAs with relapse-free survival, and 3 lncRNAs with progression-free survival. Our analysis showed that multiple lncRNAs were significantly associated with BC clinicopathology and survival. A large-scale study is needed to verify the prognostic value of these lncRNAs in BC.
Effects of marital status on breast cancer survival by age, race, and hormone receptor status: A population‐based Study
Introduction It remains unclear whether marital status could affect the breast cancer‐caused special survival (BCSS) of patients with breast cancer. Therefore, we sought to explore the influence of demographic and pathological factors on prognosis of patients with breast cancer. Materials and methods We selected patients meeting the eligibility criteria from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) cancer registry program. We assessed the effect of marital status on overall survival (OS) and BCSS using Kaplan‐Meier curve and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression. Results Compared with divorced/separated/widowed (DSW) patients, the married (AHR 0.7483, 95% CI: 0.729‐0.7682, P < 0.001) and single patients had better BCSS (AHR 0.9096, 95% CI: 0.8796‐0.9406, P < 0.001). Married patients kept better prognosis among all age subgroups, while the better BCSS of single patients occurred only in groups older than 35 years. As for race and hormone receptor status (HRs), the better BCSS of single patients was only observed in white race (AHR 0.881, 95% CI: 0.8457‐0.9177, P < 0.001) and patients with ER+/PR + status (AHR 0.8844, 95% CI: 0.8393‐0.932, P < 0.001). Conclusion Our findings demonstrated that married and single patients with breast cancer had better prognosis than their DSW counterparts. Age, race, and HRs could affect the correlation between marital status and BCSS. Compared with divorced/separated/widowed patients with breast cancer, the married and single patients had better breast cancer-caused special survival. The survival benefit of single patients varied across age, race, and surgery subgroups, which might associate with the stage, grade, and hormone receptor status of patients.
Across-fault distributions of radon concentrations in soil gas for different tectonic environments
The radon concentration in soil gas at the crustal surface is closely related to the development of local fractures. Therefore, the spatial variation in soil-gas radon concentrations across faults differs between fault zones located in different tectonic environments. This study investigates the Beiluntai thrust fault and the Haiyuan strike-slip fault in west China, which are assumed to be typical examples of the different types of faults. Radon concentrations in soil gas were measured at various locations around these faults, and the spatial variation in these concentrations was characterized along fault-perpendicular profiles. For normal fault, our results indicate that concentrations are usually highest at the fault, and decrease gradually away from the fault in either direction. For thrust, however, concentrations increase in the hanging wall approaching the fault, but decrease sharply at the fault. For strike-slip fault with extension across the fault, soil-gas radon concentrations are relatively high at the fault, and decrease gradually with distance from the fault. For strike-slip fault with contraction across the fault, soil-gas radon concentrations are relatively low at the fault, and increase gradually with distance from the fault.
Hydrochemical Characteristics of Groundwater at the Epicenter of the 2021 Biru M6.1 Earthquake in Central Tibet
Groundwater is undoubtedly important for water security and eco-environmental protection, especially in areas that experience earthquakes. Analyzing the characteristics and variation of groundwater after an earthquake is significant to obtain a better understanding of the seismic risk and rational management of groundwater resources. This study investigated the hydrogeochemical characteristics of groundwater at the epicenter of the 2021 Biru M6.1 earthquake in central Tibet, southwest China, using 23 water samples. The results showed that: (1) the hydrochemical type, hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratios, and SiO2 concentrations of three hot spring water samples in the study area were significantly different from those of samples taken elsewhere, indicating that the hot spring water originates from deeper geothermal reservoirs and has undergone more distant migration and longer fractionation processes; (2) the geochemical characteristics of groundwater from some sampling sites in the epicentral area were apparently distinct from those of other shallow groundwater or surface water samples, suggesting that the groundwater environment in the epicentral area has been affected by the earthquake. Along with the macroscopic groundwater responses in the epicentral area after the earthquake, we investigated the influencing mechanisms of the earthquake on the regional groundwater environment. We conclude that a shorter distance from the epicenter to the seismogenic fault leads to a greater possibility of the generation of new fractures, which then induce macroscopic responses and chemical characteristic variations for groundwater.
Chronology and petrogenesis of the Hejiazhuang granitoid pluton and its constraints on the Early Triassic tectonic evolution of the South Qinling Belt
The Hejiazhuang pluton is located in the South Qinling Tectonic Belt (SQTB) in the north side of the MianxianLueyang Su ture Zone, and consists dominantly of granodiorites. LAICPMS zircon UPb dating and LuHf isotopic analyses reveal that these granodiorites of the Hejiazhaung pluton emplaced at 248 Ma, and show a large variation in zircon eHt(t) values from 4.8 to 8.8. These granodiorite samples are attributed to highK to midK calcalkaline series, and characterized by high SiO2 (66.6±70.0%), A1203 (15.04±16.10%) and Na20 (3.74±4.33%) concentrations, with high Mg# (54.2±61.7). All samples have high Sr (627±751 ppm), Cr (553±73 ppm) and Ni (17.2182 ppm), but low Y (5.42-8.41 ppm) and Yb (0.59-0.74 ppm) concentrations with high Sr/Y ratios (84.90±120.66). They also display highly fractionated REE patterns with (La/Yb)N ratios of 18.93-4.0 and positive Eu anomalies (0"Eu=1.102.22) in the chondritenormalized REE patterns. In the primitive mantle normalized spidergrams, these samples exhibit enrichment in LILEs but depletion in Nb, Ta, P and Ti. These geochemical fea tures indicate that the granodioritic magma of the Hejiazhuang pluton was derived from the partial melting of hybrid sources comprising the subducted oceanic slab and sediments, and the melts were polluted by the mantle wedge materials during their ascent. The emplacement ages and petrogenesis of the Hejiazhuang pluton prove that the initial subduction of the Mianlue oceanic crust occurred at 248 Ma ago, and the SQTB was still under subduction tectonic setting in the Early Triassic.
GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotype increase the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma: evidence based on 46 studies
Background It is well known that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been one of the most life-threatening diseases all over the world. Plenty of internal and extrinsic factors have been proven to be related to HCC, such as gene mutation, viral hepatitis, and Nitrosamines. Though previous studies demonstrated that glutathione S -transferase (GST) genotypes are associated with HCC, the conclusions are inconsistent. Therefore, we carried on a renewed meta-analysis to expound the connection between the null GSTM1, GSTT1 polymorphisms and the risk of HCC. Methods We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and CNKI databases to select qualified researches which satisfied the inclusion criteria up to July 31, 2018. Finally, we selected 41 articles with 6124 cases and 9781 controls in this meta-analysis. We use ORs and 95% confidence interval (CI) to evaluate the correlation intension between the GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genes and the risk of HCC. All the statistical processes were executed by Stata (version 12.0). Results The pooled analysis showed that both GSTM1 null genotypes (OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.18–1.59) and GSTT1 null genotypes (OR = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.23–1.66) increased the risk of HCC. And GSTM1–GSTT1 dual-null genotypes also increased the risk of HCC (OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.22–2.05). In the subgroup analysis, we obtained significant results among Asians when stratified by race, and the results are GSTM1 null OR = 1.44, 95% CI = (1.22–1.71), GSTT1 null OR = 1.48, 95% CI = (1.25–1.77), GSTM1–GSTT1 null OR = 1.58, 95% CI = (1.19–2.09), while we didn’t obtain significant results among Caucasians or Africans. Stratified analyses on the type of control indicated a higher risk of HCC associated with GSTM1, GSTT1 single null genotypes and GSTM1–GSTT1 dual-null genotypes in healthy people. No evidence of significant connection was discovered in chronic liver disease (CLD) except in GSTT1 single null. Conclusions Our study indicated that an individual who carries the GSTM1, GSTT1 single null genotypes and GSTT1–GSTM1 dual-null genotypes is more likely to develop HCC.
GOLGA7 rs11337, a Polymorphism at the MicroRNA Binding Site, Is Associated with Glioma Prognosis
MicroRNAs bind to the 3′ untranslated regions of mRNAs, affecting translation, tumorigenesis, and apoptosis. This study evaluated the role of TYMS (rs1059394, C > T, and rs2847153, G > A), RYR3 (rs1044129, G > A), KIAA0423 (rs1053667, T > C), and GOLGA7 (rs11337, G > T) polymorphisms for assessment of glioma risk and prognosis among the Chinese Han population. Five single-nucleotide polymorphisms were assessed in 605 glioma patients and 1,300 controls. We found a significant correlation between rs1059394 and glioma susceptibility in the homozygote and dominant genetic models (TT versus CC, odds ratio [OR] = 0.71, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.52–0.97, p = 0.03; CT+TT versus CC, OR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.55–0.99, p = 0.04). The results of the Kaplan-Meier and log rank tests revealed that the rs11337 GG genotype correlated with better overall survival of glioma patients (p = 0.017) than the GT genotype. Multivariate Cox regression analysis results also showed that the rs11337 GT genotype correlated with worse overall survival (p = 0.017, hazard ratio [HR] = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.04–1.5) than the GG genotype. These results suggest that GOLGA7 (rs11337) polymorphism may play a role in the prognosis of glioma patients and that TYMS (rs1059394) is associated with glioma risk.
