Can Economic Assistance Shape Combatant Support in Wartime? Experimental Evidence from Afghanistan

Governments, militaries, and aid organizations all rely on economic interventions to shape civilian attitudes toward combatants during wartime. We have, however, little individual-level evidence that these “hearts andminds” programs actually influence combatant support. We address this problem by conducting a factorial randomized control trial of two common interventions—vocational training and cash transfers—on combatant support among 2,597 at-risk youth in Kandahar, Afghanistan. We find that training only improved economic livelihoods modestly and had little effect on combatant support. Cash failed to lift incomes, producing a boom-and-bust dynamic in which pro-government sentiment initially spiked and then quickly reversed itself, leaving a residue of increased Taliban support. Conditional on training, cash failed to improve beneficiaries’ livelihoods but did increase support for the Afghan government for at least eight months after the intervention. These findings suggest that aid affects attitudes by providing information about government resolve and competence rather than by improving economic livelihoods.

Entanglement of purification for multipartite states and its holographic dual

We introduce a new information-theoretic measure of multipartite correlations Δ

, by generalizing the entanglement of purification to multipartite states. We provide proofs of its various properties, focusing on several entropic inequalities, in generic quantum systems. In particular, it turns out that the multipartite entanglement of purification gives an upper bound on multipartite mutual information, which is a generalization of quantum mutual information in the spirit of relative entropy. After that, motivated by a tensor network description of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we conjecture a holographic dual of multipartite entanglement of purification Δ
W
, as a sum of minimal areas of codimension-2 surfaces which divide the entanglement wedge into multi-pieces. We prove that this geometrical quantity satisfies all properties we proved for the multipartite entanglement of purification. These agreements strongly support the Δ

conjecture. We also show that the multipartite entanglement of purification is larger than multipartite squashed entanglement, which is a promising measure of multipartite quantum entanglement. We discuss potential saturation of multipartite squashed entanglement onto multipartite mutual information in holographic CFTs and its applications.

Reexamining the Effect of Refugees on Civil Conflict: A Global Subnational Analysis

A large literature suggests that the presence of refugees is associated with greater risk of conflict. We argue that the positive effects of hosting refugees on local conditions have been overlooked. Using global data from 1990 to 2018 on locations of refugee communities and civil conflict at the subnational level, we find no evidence that hosting refugees increases the likelihood of new conflict, prolongs existing conflict, or raises the number of violent events or casualties. Furthermore, we explore conditions where provinces are likely to experience substantively large decreases in conflict risk due to increased development. Analysis examining nighttime lights as a measure of development, coupled with expert interviews, support our claim. To address the possibility of selection bias, we use placebo tests and matching. Our research challenges assertions that refugees are security risks. Instead, we show that in many cases, hosting refugees can encourage local development and even conflict reduction.

Exploring the relationship between air pollution and meteorological conditions in China under environmental governance
2020
Extensive studies have been carried out on the impact of human activities on air pollution, but systematic investigation on the relationship between air pollutant and meteorological conditions is still insufficient, especially in the context of China’s site scale and recent comprehensive environmental pollution control. Here, we used a spatial interpolation technology to establish a set of data sets of pollutants and meteorological elements that are spatially matched at 896 stations in China to reveal the air pollutant-meteorological interactions between 2014 and 2019. We found that air pollution and meteorological elements have obvious seasonal and regional characteristics. Over the last few years, the concentration of most air pollutants in China has dropped significantly except for O
3
. The increase in O
3
concentration was closely related to the decrease of particulate matter and NO
2
concentration. The concentration of most air pollutants was affected by meteorological conditions, but the level of impact depended on the type of pollutants and varied across regions. The concentration of air pollutants at most stations was significantly negatively correlated with wind speed, precipitation and relative humidity, but positively correlated with atmospheric pressure. As the latitude increases, the impact of temperature on the concentration of air pollutants becomes more obvious. To effectively control air pollution, it is further urgent to reveal the relationship between air pollution and meteorological conditions based on long-term daily or real-time data.

RNA N6-methyladenosine reader IGF2BP3 regulates cell cycle and angiogenesis in colon cancer

Background
N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) modification has been implicated in multiple processes for colon cancer development. IGF2BP3 was a newly reported m6A reader, whereas its role in colon cancer remains unclear.
Methods
The expression of m6A associated enzymes and total m6A level were measured by Western Blotting analysis and m6A RNA Methylation Quantification Kit respectively. Cell cycle was analyzed by flowcytometry. The interaction of IGF2BP3 and related targets was analyzed by RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) and m6A RNA immunoprecipitation (MeRIP) assays.
Results
We investigated all m6A regulated enzymes in colon cancer and found only the overexpression of IGF2BP3 was associated with cancer progression and survival based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) databases. Additionally, we also demonstrated IGF2BP3 was associated with DNA replication in the cell cycle. Knockdown of IGF2BP3 significantly repressed percentage of S phase of cell cycle as well as cell proliferation. Further research demonstrated IGF2BP3 bound to the mRNA of Cyclin D1 (CCND1, checkpoint of G1/S phase of cell cycle) and reduced its mRNA stability via reading m6A modification in the CDS region. Overexpression of Cyclin D1 in IGF2BP3 down-regulated cells completely rescued the inhibited percentage of S phase in cell cycle as well as cell proliferation. Additionally, we also demonstrated a similar role of IGF2BP3 at VEGF. IGF2BP3 bound to the mRNA of VEGF and reads m6A modification, thus regulated both expression and stability of VEGF mRNA. Knockdown of IGF2BP3 repressed angiogenesis in colon cancer via regulating VEGF.
Conclusion
Knockdown of IGF2BP3 repressed DNA replication in the S phase of cell cycle and angiogenesis via reading m6A modification of CCND1 and VEGF respectively. IGF2BP3 was a possible prognosis marker and potential therapeutic target of colon cancer.

The MdBBX22–miR858–MdMYB9/11/12 module regulates proanthocyanidin biosynthesis in apple peel

Summary Proanthocyanidins (PAs) have antioxidant properties and are beneficial to human health. The fruit of apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.), especially the peel, is rich in various flavonoids, such as PAs, and thus is an important source of dietary antioxidants. Previous research on the regulation of PAs in apple has mainly focussed on the transcription level, whereas studies conducted at the post‐transcriptional level are relatively rare. In this study, we investigated the function of mdm‐miR858, a miRNA with multiple functions in plant development, in the peel of apple fruit. We showed that mdm‐miR858 negatively regulated PA accumulation by targeting MdMYB9/11/12 in the peel. During fruit development, mdm‐miR858 expression was negatively correlated with MdMYB9/11/12 expression and PA accumulation. A 5′‐RACE experiment, GUS staining assays and transient luminescent assays indicated that mdm‐miR858 cleaved and inhibited the expression of MdMYB9/11/12. Overexpression of mdm‐miR858 in apple calli, tobacco and Arabidopsis reduced the accumulation of PAs induced by overexpression of MdMYB9/11/12. Furthermore, we found that MdBBX22 bound to the mdm‐miR858 promoter and induced its expression. Overexpression of MdBBX22 induced the expression of mdm‐miR858 to inhibit the accumulation of PAs in apple calli overexpressing MdMYB9/11/12. Under light stress, MdBBX22 induced mdm‐miR858 expression to inhibit PA accumulation and thereby indirectly enhanced anthocyanin synthesis in the peel. The present results revealed that the MdBBX22–miR858–MdMYB9/11/12 module regulates PA accumulation in apple. The findings provide a reference for further studies of the regulatory mechanism of PA accumulation and the relationship between PAs and anthocyanins.

CircEZH2/miR-133b/IGF2BP2 aggravates colorectal cancer progression via enhancing the stability of m6A-modified CREB1 mRNA

Background
Aberrant expression of circular RNAs (circRNAs) contributes to the initiation and progression of human malignancies, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely elusive.
Methods
High-throughput sequencing was performed to screen aberrantly expressed circRNAs or miRNAs in colorectal cancer (CRC) and adjacent normal tissues. A series of gain- and loss-of-function studies were conducted to evaluate the biological behaviors of CRC cells. RNA pulldown, mass spectrometry, RIP, qRT-PCR, Western blot, luciferase reporter assays and MeRIP-seq analysis were further applied to dissect the detailed mechanisms.
Results
Here, a novel circRNA named circEZH2 (hsa_circ_0006357) was screened out by RNA-seq in CRC tissues, whose expression is closely related to the clinicpathological characteristics and prognosis of CRC patients. A reader IGF2BP2 and blocks its ubiquitination-dependent degradation. Meanwhile, circEZH2 could serve as a sponge of miR-133b, resulting in the upregulation of IGF2BP2. Particularly, circEZH2/IGF2BP2 enhances the stability of CREB1 mRNA, thus aggravating CRC progression.
Conclusions
Our findings not only reveal the pivotal roles of circEZH2 in modulating CRC progression, but also advocate for attenuating circEZH2/miR-133b/IGF2BP2/ CREB1 regulatory axis to combat CRC.

Innate immunity and early liver inflammation

The innate system constitutes a first-line defence mechanism against pathogens. 80% of the blood supply entering the human liver arrives from the splanchnic circulation through the portal vein, so it is constantly exposed to immunologically active substances and pathogens from the gastrointestinal tract. Rapid neutralization of pathogens and toxins is an essential function of the liver, but so too is avoidance of harmful and unnecessary immune reactions. This delicate balance of reactivity and tolerance is orchestrated by a diverse repertoire of hepatic immune cells. In particular, the human liver is enriched in many innate immune cell subsets, including Kupffer cells (KCs), innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) like Natural Killer (NK) cells and ILC-like unconventional T cells – namely Natural Killer T cells (NKT), γδ T cells and Mucosal-associated Invariant T cells (MAIT). These cells reside in the liver in a memory-effector state, so they respond quickly to trigger appropriate responses. The contribution of aberrant innate immunity to inflammatory liver diseases is now being better understood. In particular, we are beginning to understand how specific innate immune subsets trigger chronic liver inflammation, which ultimately results in hepatic fibrosis. In this review, we consider the roles of specific innate immune cell subsets in early inflammation in human liver disease.

Reflected entropy for an evaporating black hole

bstract
We study reflected entropy as a mixed state correlation measure in black hole evaporation. As a measure for bipartite mixed states, reflected entropy can be computed between black hole and radiation, radiation and radiation, and even black hole and black hole. We compute reflected entropy curves in three different models: 3-side wormhole model, End-of-the-World (EOW) brane model in three dimensions and two-dimensional eternal black hole plus CFT model. For 3-side wormhole model, we find that reflected entropy is dual to island cross section. The reflected entropy between radiation and black hole increases at early time and then decreases to zero, similar to Page curve, but with a later transition time. The reflected entropy between radiation and radiation first increases and then saturates. For the EOW brane model, similar behaviors of reflected entropy are found.
We propose a quantum extremal surface for reflected entropy, which we call quantum extremal cross section. In the eternal black hole plus CFT model, we find a generalized formula for reflected entropy with island cross section as its area term by considering the right half as the canonical purification of the left. Interestingly, the reflected entropy curve between the left black hole and the left radiation is nothing but the Page curve. We also find that reflected entropy between the left black hole and the right black hole decreases and goes to zero at late time. The reflected entropy between radiation and radiation increases at early time and saturates at late time.
