Classification of Acoustic Characteristics of Bubble Flow and Influencing Factors of Critical Gas Flow Velocity
2025
To address the unclear coupling mechanism between bubble detachment behavior and acoustic characteristics in gas–liquid two-phase flow, this paper systematically studied bubble behavior and acoustic characteristics under different conditions by building a high-precision synchronous measurement system, combining acoustic signal analysis and bubble dynamics observation. The influence mechanism of liquid surface tension, dynamic viscosity, and orifice diameter on the critical gas flow velocity of bubble flow transition was analyzed, and a flow pattern classification criterion system was established. The experimental results showed that the bubble flow state could be divided into three states according to the characteristics of the acoustic signals: discrete bubble flow, single-chain bubble flow, and dual-stage chain bubble flow. The liquid surface tension and dynamic viscosity had no significant effect on the critical gas flow velocity of the transition from discrete bubble flow to single-chain bubble flow, but significantly increased the critical gas flow velocity of the transition from single-chain bubble flow to dual-stage chain bubble flow. The increase in the orifice diameter reduced the critical gas flow velocity of the two types of flow transition. In addition, the Weber number (We) and Galileo number (Ga) were introduced to construct a quantitative classification system of flow pattern, which provided theoretical support for the optimization of industrial gas–liquid two-phase flow.

Understanding drop dispersion behavior is significant to the optimization of liquid dispersion devices. In this work, the drop dispersion behavior in the combined trapezoid spray tray was directly observed and analyzed with a high-speed camera. It was found that the fracture of the liquid neck is the main mode for the liquid column to generate drops. The dispersion behavior of the drops was simulated by CFD, and it was found that the liquid neck is caused by the surrounding vortex field and the uneven pressure distribution inside the liquid column. At the same time, the dispersion time of the drops was counted, and it was found that the drop dispersion time ranges from 5 to 60 ms, depending on the drop diameter and the gas kinetic energy factor in plate hole F0.

Study of direct and indirect risk assessment of landslide impacts on ultrahigh-voltage electricity transmission lines
2024
Ultrahigh-voltage electricity systems are a vital part of energy networks, often across wide regions passing through mountainous terrains. The instability of slopes forming tower foundations along transmission lines poses a large risk to the entire energy network. Moreover, the tower foundations along extra-high-voltage electricity transmission lines are a very special type of element that are also highly vulnerable to landslides. In this study, an integrative risk assessment framework, including a hazard assessment, vulnerability analysis for the specified element at risk, and consequence estimation, is proposed to quantify the direct and indirect risks of landslides to power transmission lines. The Yanzi landslide, where a tower of the major ultrahigh-voltage transmission line from Sichuan (western China) to Shanghai (eastern China) has just been constructed, is taken as a case study. The correlation between landslide displacement and tower structure tilting is studied. In terms of the precipitation return period, factors of safety, failure probability, and deformation are simulated. A physical vulnerability curve is fitted by assuming a Weibull relationship between the horizontal deformation (hazard intensity) of the landslide and the tower inclination ratio. The total risk is calculated as the sum of the direct and indirect losses, among which the potential indirect risk due to tower damage is much greater than the direct risk. This work demonstrates the importance of landslide treatment strategies along electricity transmission lines by considering the potential indirect risks. The risk assessment model of landslides affecting ultrahigh-voltage electricity transmission lines proposed in this study could be useful for other types of indirect landslide risk evaluations.

Denoising of Partial Discharge Signal in Stator Using Wavelet Transform with Improved Thresholding Function
2025
Partial discharge (PD) signals are used to evaluate the insulation condition of stators in electrical machines. Their measurements are often heavily corrupted by ambient noise, making denoising essential for effective detection and analysis of PD signals. Wavelet thresholding techniques are widely applied to denoise PD signals. However, existing hard and soft thresholding functions introduce oscillation or deviation into PD signals after wavelet reconstruction, particularly under high-noise conditions. This paper proposes an improved thresholding function for the wavelet threshold denoising method that effectively overcomes the oscillation issue associated with the hard thresholding function and the constant deviation of the soft thresholding function. Additionally, wavelet basis selection based on the correlation coefficient and an adaptive threshold value is integrated with the improved thresholding function to implement the wavelet threshold denoising method. The proposed technique is applied to both simulated and real-world measured PD signals to evaluate its performance across different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels. Compared with traditional soft and hard thresholding functions, simulation results confirm the superiority of the improved thresholding function, especially under high-noise conditions. At an input Gaussian noise level of −10 dB, the proposed method yielded an SNR that was 1.20 dB and 2.66 dB higher than those of the hard and soft thresholding functions, respectively.

Interfacial Transition Zone Strengthening in Aeolian Sand Concrete via ssDNA Anchored CNTs on Alkali-Activated Surface Layer
2026
The use of aeolian sand as a fine aggregate in concrete production provides a sustainable pathway to valorize abundant aeolian resources while alleviating the global shortage of natural construction aggregates. However, the high ultrafine particle content of aeolian sand results in the formation of highly porous interfacial transition zones (ITZ) between sand particles and cement paste, which is the primary cause of the inherent brittleness and inferior mechanical performance of aeolian sand concrete. To overcome this critical limitation, an alkali-activated surface layer (ASL) was constructed on aeolian sand via 4 mol/L KOH activation. This process induced the surface micro-dissolution of minerals to create high-density active ion sites (specifically Ca2+, K+, Na+, and Fe3+). These sites facilitated the precise anchoring of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) through the chemical coordination of single-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (ssDNA). The influence of the ASL and the ssDNA/CNTs nanocomposite on the ITZ was elucidated through macro-mechanical testing and multi-scale microstructural characterization. Experimental results demonstrated that compressive strength, flexural strength, and compressive energy dissipation increased by 48%, 67%, and 42%, respectively. Microstructurally, the modification promoted a pore refinement mechanism, reducing the proportion of harmful (pores > 0.1 μm) from 51% to 20% and narrowing the ITZ width from 20–40 μm to 10–15 μm (a 67% reduction). The observed performance enhancement is attributed to the synergistic effect of the ASL and ssDNA/CNTs, which transforms the inherently weak ITZ into a chemically reinforced interfacial phase via molecular-scale coordination bonding and optimized stacking of cement hydration products.

Color center-rich γ-Al2O3 promotes propane dehydrogenation
2024
The PtSn/Al

catalyst is commonly used in commercial propane dehydrogenation (PDH) processes, but it faces challenges in the deactivation and periodic regeneration due to metal aggregation and coke deposition at high temperatures. Although Al
penta

has been proven to be beneficial for enhancing catalytic stability, bottom-up synthesis protocols usually restrict their applications. Here, a facile post-treatment approach using acetic acid was applied to create color centers (electrons trapped within oxygen vacancies) on γ-Al

. Notably, the content of Al
penta

was enriched to 18.3%. Then, the pre-established PtSn clusters were loaded. The electrons facilitated the formation of ultrafine PtSn nanoparticles (∼2 nm), and the Al

High‐Viability Circulating Tumor Cells Sorting From Whole Blood at Single Cell Level Using Laser‐Induced Forward Transfer‐Assisted Microfiltration
2025
The efficient isolation and molecular analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from whole blood at single‐cell level are crucial for understanding tumor metastasis and developing personalized treatments. The viability of isolated cells is the key prerequisite for the downstream molecular analysis, especially for RNA sequencing. This study develops a laser‐induced forward transfer ‐assisted microfiltration system (LIFT‐AMFS) for high‐viability CTC enrichment and retrieval from whole blood. The LIFT‐compatible double‐stepped microfilter (DSMF), central to this system, comprises two micropore layers: the lower layer's smaller micropores facilitate size‐based cell separation, and the upper layer's larger micropores enable liquid encapsulating captured cells. By optimizing the design of the DSMFs, the system has a capture efficiency of 88% at the processing throughput of up to 15.0 mL min−1 during the microfilter‐based size screening stage, with a single‐cell yield of over 95% during the retrieval stage. The retrieved single cells, with high viability, are qualified for ex vivo culture and direct RNA sequencing. The cDNA yield from isolated CTCs surpassed 4.5 ng, sufficient for library construction. All single‐cell sequencing data exhibited Q30 scores above 95.92%. The LIFT‐AMFS shows promise in cellular and biomedical research. A laser‐induced forward transfer‐assisted microfiltration system is developed for single rare cell sorting from undiluted whole blood. The isolated cell has a high viability, enabling successful ex vivo cell culture and efficient single‐cell RNA sequencing. The technology offers a robust and versatile tool for advancing single‐CTC research, providing significant opportunities for both clinical applications and a deeper understanding of metastasis mechanisms.

Therapeutic Potential of Perillaldehyde in Ameliorating Vulvovaginal Candidiasis by Reducing Vaginal Oxidative Stress and Apoptosis
2022
Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is one of the most frequent diseases induced by Candida albicans (C. albicans) during pregnancy, which results in enormous pain to women and their partners in daily life. Perillaldehyde (PAE), a natural monoterpenoid, has significant anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidation effects. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are key factors for the host to resist the invasion of fungi. However, excess ROS can cause additional damage independent of the pathogen itself, and the mechanism of ROS in VVC has not been investigated. In this murine study, we revealed that C. albicans infection increased the expression of NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2) and the content of malonaldehyde (MDA). C. albicans inhibited the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the vagina, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and heme oxygenase (HO-1), which were returned to normal levels after treatment with PAE. Furthermore, PAE inhibited the activities of Keap1 and promoted Nrf2 transfer from cytoplasm to nucleus, which were mediated by excessive accumulation of ROS in the VVC mice. In this study, we also indicated that PAE inhibited the apoptosis of vagina cells via Caspase 9- Caspase 7-PARP pathway and prevented the release of IL-1ꞵ in VVC mice. In summary, this study revealed that the treatment of VVC in mice with PAE might be mediated by inhibition of ROS, and established the therapeutic potential of PAE as an antifungal agent for the treatment of VVC.

FYB1-targeted modulation of CAPG promotes AML progression
2025
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a rare and heterogeneous disease. Over the past few decades, patient prognosis has improved with continuous improvements in treatment, but outcomes for some patients with primary drug resistance or relapse after treatment remain poor. Additional therapies to improve outcomes for these patients are urgently needed. FYB1 expression differs substantially between AML tissues and normal tissues. High FYB1 expression is correlated with poorer overall survival (OS), indicating that FYB1 may regulate AML progression. Therefore, understanding the effect of FYB1 on AML could improve the success rate of therapeutic approaches and prognosis for patients with AML. In this study, through analysis of large databases and both in vivo and in vitro experiments, we assessed the expression and role of FYB1 in AML and the relationship of FYB with patient prognosis. Downstream targets of the FYB1 gene were analyzed by RNA-seq. Database mining and in vitro experiments were used to further clarify the effect of the downstream target gelsolin-like actin-capping protein (CAPG) on AML cells and its relationship with patient prognosis. FYB1 expression was significantly higher in AML tissue and corresponded with a poor prognosis. FYB1 knockdown inhibited AML cell proliferation, promoted cell apoptosis, reduced cell adhesion capability and significantly reduced the tumor formation rate in mice. In addition, FYB1 knockdown induced a notable decrease in CAPG expression. The suppression of CAPG significantly inhibited cell proliferation and increased cell apoptosis. The conclusions of this study underscore the pivotal role of the FYB1/CAPG axis in promoting AML. We propose that the FYB1/CAPG axis could serve as a new thread in the development of therapeutic strategies for AML.

IL-18 Signaling Is Essential for Causing Streptococcal Toxic Shock-like Syndrome (STSLS)
2022
Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen that can cause multiple diseases, including streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome (STSLS). The S. suis SC-19 strain could cause NOD-like receptor thermal protein domain-associated protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome hyperactivation, then induce a cytokine storm and STSLS. Although IL-18 is the downstream effector of NLRP3 signaling, the role of IL-18 signaling on STSLS remains to be elucidated. Thus, il18r1 gene knockout mice were constructed and challenged with the SC-19 strain. Alleviated clinical signs and tissue damages, as well as improved survival were observed in il18r−/− mice compared with the WT mice post-SC-19 challenge. Meanwhile, an obvious decrease in the inflammatory cytokine levels in blood was observed in the il18r-/- mice infected with SC-19. Therefore, IL-18, the downstream effector of NLRP3 inflammasome activation, was responsible for the cytokine storm and STSLS development caused by S. suis, suggesting that IL-18/IL-18Rα signaling could serve as a new target for STSLS.
