Graptolites in British stratigraphy
697 taxa of planktonic graptolites are recorded, and their stratigraphical ranges are given, through 60 biozones and subzones in the Ordovician and Silurian strata of England, Wales and Scotland, in the first such stratigraphical compilation for Great Britain since the synthesis of Elles & Wood (1901–1918).

Ostracods from Upper Ordovician (Katian) carbonate lithofacies in southwest Scotland
The Ordovician Craighead Limestone Formation of southwest Scotland was formed on a carbonate platform on the eastern tropical margin of the Laurentia palaeocontinent during the early Katian (c. 456 Ma). It yields the most diverse and well-preserved ostracod fauna yet recovered from the Scottish Ordovician succession, with some 25 species divisible into two distinct marine biotopes comprising shallow lagoonal and deeper platform margin settings, respectively. The ostracods show strong biogeographic links at species-level with Sandbian and early Katian faunas of North America, including Krausella arcuata, Steusloffina cuneata, Monoceratella teres and species of Levisulculus and Platybolbina. However, many of the ostracod genera that characterize the Craighead Limestone Formation have earlier origins in the Baltica palaeocontinent, suggesting enhanced migration of species from mid- (Baltica about 30° S) to low (Laurentia) latitudes in the late Sandbian and early Katian interval. Such Baltica-origin genera include Distobolbina, Kiesowia and Platybolbina. Notable is the wide biogeographic occurrence of Steusloffina cuneata, extending from warm tropical Laurentia to cooler high-latitude Gondwana, an enormous latitudinal range for a shelf-dwelling marine species. The possible Tvaerenellidae taxon Duoarcus levigatus gen. et sp. nov. is described.

Early Palaeozoic initial-rift volcanism in the Central European Variscides (the Kaczawa Mountains, Sudetes, SW Poland); evidence from SIMS dating of zircons
Early Palaeozoic volcanic suites are widespread throughout the Variscan Belt, and have commonly been ascribed to incipient rifting along the northern periphery of Gondwana in Cambrian to Ordovician times. Their distribution across Europe defines the present-day extent of Gondwana-derived terranes and constrains the timing of their separation from the Gondwanan margin. The Kaczawa Mountains in the West Sudetes, at the eastern termination of the Variscan Belt, include bimodal rift-related rocks, but their protolith age and, hence, their significance have been highly uncertain. We have applied secondary ionization mass spectrometry zircon geochronology to a metarhyodacite and a metatrachyte from this suite, yielding ages of 502.4±2.6 Ma and 485.7±1.6 Ma, respectively. This constrains the initial rift magmatism to c. 500-485 Ma in this part of the European Variscides. The rift-related Early Palaeozoic volcanism thus seems to have been broadly synchronous throughout the peri-Gondwanan terranes of Europe.

Dating diagenetic monazite in mudrocks; constraining the oil window?
Authigenic monazite nodules, increasingly recognized in Pre-Mesozoic mudrock successions, provide a means for dating diagenesis by exploiting trace uranium within the monazite structure. But, dating is difficult in practice because of zonation and abundant host rock inclusions. We report here a refined technique that has yielded a date of 419±14 Ma 2σ MSWD = 1.2 for a 17-point Pb-Pb regression age from a Telychian (Silurian: late Llandovery) mudrock from central Wales. SHRIMP analyses of monazite nodules from the same horizon are consistent with this, and additionally demonstrate concordance of the U-Pb and Th-Pb systems. These results open the door to providing robust dates for a phase of burial-related diagenesis which, in Wales, seems approximately coincident with, and perhaps was related to, hydrocarbon expulsion.
