Shadows and photon spheres with spherical accretions in the four-dimensional Gauss–Bonnet black hole
We investigate the shadows and photon spheres of the four-dimensional Gauss–Bonnet black hole with the static and infalling spherical accretions. We show that, for both cases, there always exist shadows and photon spheres. The radii of the shadows and photon spheres are independent of the profiles of accretion for a fixed Gauss–Bonnet constant, implying that the shadow is a signature of the spacetime geometry and it is hardly influenced by accretion. Because of the Doppler effect, the shadows of the infalling accretion are found to be darker than in the static case. We also investigate the effect of the Gauss–Bonnet constant on the shadow and photon spheres, and we find that the larger the Gauss–Bonnet constant is, the smaller the radii of the shadow and photon spheres will be. In particular, the observed specific intensity increases as the Gauss–Bonnet constant grows.
Influence of quintessence dark energy on the shadow of black hole
We investigate the effects of quintessence dark energy on the shadows of black hole, surrounded by various profiles of accretions. For the thin-disk accretion, the images of the black hole comprises the dark region and bright region, including direct emission, lensing rings and photon rings. Although their details depend on the form of the emission, generically, direct emission plays a major role for the observed brightness of the black hole, while the lensing ring makes a small contribution and the photon ring makes a negligible contribution. The existence of a cosmological horizon also plays an important role in the shadows, since the observer in the domain of outer communications is near the cosmological horizon. For spherically symmetric accretion, static and infalling matters are considered. We find that the positions of photon spheres are the same for both static and infalling accretions. However, the observed specific intensity of the image for infalling accretion is darker than for static accretion, due to the Doppler effect of the infalling motion.
A rigid and healable polymer cross-linked by weak but abundant Zn(II)-carboxylate interactions
Achieving a desirable combination of solid-like properties and fast self-healing is a great challenge due to slow diffusion dynamics. In this work, we describe a design concept that utilizes weak but abundant coordination bonds to achieve this objective. The designed PDMS polymer, crosslinked by abundant Zn(II)-carboxylate interactions, is very strong and rigid at room temperature. As the coordination equilibrium is sensitive to temperature, the mechanical strength of this polymer rapidly and reversibly changes upon heating or cooling. The soft–rigid switching ability σ, defined as G’ max /G’ min , can reach 8000 when ΔT = 100 °C. Based on these features, this polymer not only exhibits fast thermal-healing properties, but is also advantageous for various applications such as in orthopedic immobilization, conductive composites/adhesives, and 3D printing. Combining solid-like properties with fast self-healing is a great challenge due to slow diffusion dynamics. Here the authors demonstrate a rigid and healable material by using weak but abundant coordination bonds to crosslink a PDMS polymer.
Resolving the puzzle of single-atom silver dispersion on nanosized γ-Al2O3 surface for high catalytic performance
Ag/γ-Al 2 O 3 is widely used for catalyzing various reactions, and its performance depends on the valence state, morphology and dispersion of Ag species. However, detailed anchoring mechanism of Ag species on γ-Al 2 O 3 remains largely unknown. Herein, we reveal that the terminal hydroxyls on γ-Al 2 O 3 are responsible for anchoring Ag species. The abundant terminal hydroxyls existed on nanosized γ-Al 2 O 3 can lead to single-atom silver dispersion, thereby resulting in markedly enhanced performance than the Ag cluster on microsized γ-Al 2 O 3 . Density-functional-theory calculations confirm that Ag atom is mainly anchored by the terminal hydroxyls on (100) surface, forming a staple-like local structure with each Ag atom bonded with two or three terminal hydroxyls. Our finding resolves the puzzle on why the single-atom silver dispersion can be spontaneously achieved only on nanosized γ-Al 2 O 3 , but not on microsized γ-Al 2 O 3 . The obtained insight into the Ag species dispersion will benefit future design of more efficient supported Ag catalysts. Detailed atom-level anchoring mechanism of Ag species on γ-Al 2 O 3 is largely unknown for the widely used Ag/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst. Here, the authors demonstrate that single-Ag atom can be only anchored by the terminal hydroxyls on the (100) surfaces of γ-Al 2 O 3 through consuming two or three terminal hydroxyls.
The optical appearance of charged four-dimensional Gauss–Bonnet black hole with strings cloud and non-commutative geometry surrounded by various accretions profiles
Thanks for the releasing image of supermassive black holes (BHs) by the event horizon telescope (EHT) at the heart of the M 87 galaxy. After the discovery of this mysterious object, scientists paid attention to exploring the BH shadow features under different gravitational backgrounds. In this scenario, we study the light rings and observational properties of BH shadow surrounded by different accretion flow models and then investigate the effect of model parameters on the observational display and space-time structure of BHs in the framework of our considering system. Under the incompatible configuration of the emission profiles, the images of BHs comprise that the observed luminosity is mainly determined by direct emission, while the lensing ring will provide a small contribution of the total observed flux and the photon ring makes a negligible contribution due to its exponential narrowness. More importantly, the observed regions and specific intensities of all emission profiles are changed correspondingly under variations of parameters. For optically thin accreting matters, we analyze the profile and specific intensity of the shadows with static and infalling accretions models, respectively. We find that with an infalling motion the interior region of the shadows will be darker than the static case, due to the Doppler effect of the infalling movement. Finally, it is concluded that these findings support the fact that the change of BH state parameters will change the way of space-time geometry, thus affecting the BH shadow dynamics.
A Bibliometric Analysis and Visualization of Medical Big Data Research
With the rapid development of “Internet plus”, medical care has entered the era of big data. However, there is little research on medical big data (MBD) from the perspectives of bibliometrics and visualization. The substantive research on the basic aspects of MBD itself is also rare. This study aims to explore the current status of medical big data through visualization analysis on the journal papers related to MBD. We analyze a total of 988 references which were downloaded from the Science Citation Index Expanded and the Social Science Citation Index databases from Web of Science and the time span was defined as “all years”. The GraphPad Prism 5, VOSviewer and CiteSpace softwares are used for analysis. Many results concerning the annual trends, the top players in terms of journal and institute levels, the citations and H-index in terms of country level, the keywords distribution, the highly cited papers, the co-authorship status and the most influential journals and authors are presented in this paper. This study points out the development status and trends on MBD. It can help people in the medical profession to get comprehensive understanding on the state of the art of MBD. It also has reference values for the research and application of the MBD visualization methods.
Differences in Collaboration Patterns across Discipline, Career Stage, and Gender
Collaboration plays an increasingly important role in promoting research productivity and impact. What remains unclear is whether female and male researchers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematical (STEM) disciplines differ in their collaboration propensity. Here, we report on an empirical analysis of the complete publication records of 3,980 faculty members in six STEM disciplines at select U.S. research universities. We find that female faculty have significantly fewer distinct co-authors over their careers than males, but that this difference can be fully accounted for by females' lower publication rate and shorter career lengths. Next, we find that female scientists have a lower probability of repeating previous co-authors than males, an intriguing result because prior research shows that teams involving new collaborations produce work with higher impact. Finally, we find evidence for gender segregation in some sub-disciplines in molecular biology, in particular in genomics where we find female faculty to be clearly under-represented.
Investigating shadow images and rings of the charged Horndeski black hole illuminated by various thin accretions
In this paper, we investigate the shadows and rings of the charged Horndeski black hole illuminated by accretion flow that is both geometrically and optically thin. We consider two types of accretion models: spherical and thin-disk accretion flow. We find that in both types of models, the size of the charged Horndeski black hole shadow decreases with the increase of the charge, and it decreases more slowly for the Reissner–Nordström (RN) black hole. In the spherical accretion flow model, we find that the increase of the charge of Horndeski black hole brightens the light ring around it, and it brightens more significantly in comparison with RN black hole. Due to the Doppler effect, the charged Horndeski black holes with accretion flow of radial motion have darker shadows than those with the static accretion flow, but the size of the shadow is not affected by accretion flow motion. In the thin disk-shaped accretion flow model, we find that the brightness of the light ring around the charged Horndeski black hole is dominated by the direct emission from the accretion flow, and the contribution from lensed rings is relatively small, and that from the photon rings is negligible. We also find that the ring brightness decreases as the charge of Horndeski black hole increases, and the decrease is more significant than that in the RN black hole case. Moreover, the radiation position of the accretion flow can affect the shadow size and the ring brightness of the charged Horndeski black hole.
Towards complete assignment of the infrared spectrum of the protonated water cluster H+(H2O)21
The spectroscopic features of protonated water species in dilute acid solutions have been long sought after for understanding the microscopic behavior of the proton in water with gas-phase water clusters H + (H 2 O) n extensively studied as bottom-up model systems. We present a new protocol for the calculation of the infrared (IR) spectra of complex systems, which combines the fragment-based Coupled Cluster method and anharmonic vibrational quasi-degenerate perturbation theory, and demonstrate its accuracy towards the complete and accurate assignment of the IR spectrum of the H + (H 2 O) 21 cluster. The site-specific IR spectral signatures reveal two distinct structures for the internal and surface four-coordinated water molecules, which are ice-like and liquid-like, respectively. The effect of inter-molecular interaction between water molecules is addressed, and the vibrational resonance is found between the O-H stretching fundamental and the bending overtone of the nearest neighboring water molecule. The revelation of the spectral signature of the excess proton offers deeper insight into the nature of charge accommodation in the extended hydrogen-bonding network underpinning this aqueous cluster. Protonated water species have been the subject of numerous experimental and computational studies. Here the authors provide a nearly complete assignment of the experimental IR spectrum of the H + (H 2 O) 21 water cluster based on high-level wavefunction theory and anharmonic vibrational quasi-degenerate perturbation theory.
