Prognostic Significance of Tumor-Associated Macrophages in Solid Tumor: A Meta-Analysis of the Literature

Tumor associated macrophages (TAMs) are considered with the capacity to have both negative and positive effects on tumor growth. The prognostic value of TAM for survival in patients with solid tumor remains controversial.
We conducted a meta-analysis of 55 studies (n = 8,692 patients) that evaluated the correlation between TAM (detected by immunohistochemistry) and clinical staging, overall survival (OS) and disease free survival (DFS). The impact of M1 and M2 type TAM (n = 5) on survival was also examined.
High density of TAM was significantly associated with late clinical staging in patients with breast cancer [risk ratio (RR) = 1.20 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.14-1.28)] and bladder cancer [RR = 3.30 (95%CI, 1.56-6.96)] and with early clinical staging in patients with ovarian cancer [RR = 0.52 (95%CI, 0.35-0.77)]. Negative effects of TAM on OS was shown in patients with gastric cancer [RR = 1.64 (95%CI, 1.24-2.16)], breast cancer [RR = 8.62 (95%CI, 3.10-23.95)], bladder cancer [RR = 5.00 (95%CI, 1.98-12.63)], ovarian cancer [RR = 2.55 (95%CI, 1.60-4.06)], oral cancer [RR = 2.03 (95%CI, 1.47-2.80)] and thyroid cancer [RR = 2.72 (95%CI, 1.26-5.86)],and positive effects was displayed in patients with colorectal cancer [RR = 0.64 (95%CI, 0.43-0.96)]. No significant effect was showed between TAM and DFS. There was also no significant effect of two phenotypes of TAM on survival.
Although some modest bias cannot be excluded, high density of TAM seems to be associated with worse OS in patients with gastric cancer, urogenital cancer and head and neck cancer, with better OS in patients with colorectal cancer.

Manganese Oxide Nanoparticles As MRI Contrast Agents In Tumor Multimodal Imaging And Therapy

Contrast agents (CAs) play a crucial role in high-quality magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications. At present, as a result of the Gd-based CAs which are associated with renal fibrosis as well as the inherent dark imaging characteristics of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, Mn-based CAs which have a good biocompatibility and bright images are considered ideal for MRI. In addition, manganese oxide nanoparticles (MONs, such as MnO, MnO
, Mn
O
, and MnO
) have attracted attention as T1-weighted magnetic resonance CAs due to the short circulation time of Mn(II) ion chelate and the size-controlled circulation time of colloidal nanoparticles. In this review, recent advances in the use of MONs as MRI contrast agents for tumor detection and diagnosis are reported, as are the advances in in vivo toxicity, distribution and tumor microenvironment-responsive enhanced tumor chemotherapy and radiotherapy as well as photothermal and photodynamic therapies.

Will, Original Teleology and the Divine Entelechy in Husserl’s Thought

The central intention of this paper is to explore original teleology and to solve the riddle of matter based on the analysis of the flow of absolute consciousness. The paper unfolds in four steps. Firstly, it analyzes the origin of teleology in terms of Husserl’s theory of intentional acts. Since Husserl’s phenomenology itself contains teleological ideas, the creativity and goal-direction of the will reveals the intrinsic connection between will and teleology. Secondly, the relationship between the will and original teleology is discussed around the riddle of matter raised by Husserl, and the reason why teleology originates in the act of will is explained. Thirdly, the paper reinterprets the divine entelechy from the perspective of the creativity of the divine will, and points out that Husserl’s concept of God is not only the idea of the highest good, but also an entelechy that is constantly engaged in creating and becoming. Finally, in order to further argue for the important role of the will in solving the problem of teleology, this paper discusses the intrinsic relationship between transcendental reduction and the will.

Fumonisin B1: A Tool for Exploring the Multiple Functions of Sphingolipids in Plants

Fumonisin toxins are produced by Fusarium fungal pathogens. Fumonisins are structural analogs of sphingosine and potent inhibitors of ceramide synthases (CerSs); they disrupt sphingolipid metabolism and cause disease in plants and animals. Over the past three decades, researchers have used fumonisin B1 (FB1), the most common fumonisin, as a probe to investigate sphingolipid metabolism in yeast and animals. Although the physiological effects of FB1 in plants have yet to be investigated in detail, forward and reverse genetic approaches have revealed many genes involved in these processes. In this review, we discuss the intricate network of signaling pathways affected by FB1, including changes in sphingolipid metabolism and the effects of these changes, with a focus on our current understanding of the multiple effects of FB1 on plant cell death and plant growth. We analyze the major findings that highlight the connections between sphingolipid metabolism and FB1-induced signaling, and we point out where additional research is needed to fill the gaps in our understanding of FB1-induced signaling pathways in plants.

Soybean isoflavones improve the health benefits, flavour quality indicators and physical properties of grass carp (Ctenopharygodon idella)

Health benefits, flavour quality indicators and physical properties were analysed after feeding grass carp graded concentrations of soybean isoflavones (SIF) (0, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 mg/kg) for 60 days. The results demonstrated that optimal dietary SIF supplementation improved the protein and total PUFA content, especially healthcare n-3 PUFA (C18: 3n-3, EPA and DHA), and increased the flavour-related free amino acid [especially umami amino acid] and 5'-inosine monophosphate content, improving the health benefits and flavour quality indicators in the muscle of grass carp. In addition, optimal dietary SIF supplementation (25 or 50 mg SIF/kg diet) enhanced some physical properties [water-holding capacity and tenderness] and increased the collagen content; however, it reduced cathepsin activity and apoptosis. SIF supplementation enhanced the glutathione content and the activity of antioxidant enzymes (except CuZnSOD) by regulating their gene expression. The gene expression could be regulated by NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signalling in the muscle of grass carp. We demonstrated that optimal dietary SIF supplementation elevated the health benefits, flavour quality indicators and physical properties of fish muscle.

The relationship between blood lipid and risk of psoriasis: univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomization analysis

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. Dyslipidemia may be a risk factor of psoriasis. But the causal relationship between psoriasis and blood lipid still remains uncertain.
The two data of blood lipid were obtained from UK Biobank (UKBB) and Global Lipid Genetics Consortium Results (GLGC). The primary and secondary database were from large publicly available genome-wide association study (GWAS) with more than 400,000 and 170,000 subjects of European ancestry, respectively. The psoriasis from Finnish biobanks of FinnGen research project for psoriasis, consisting of 6,995 cases and 299,128 controls. The single-variable Mendelian randomization (SVMR) and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) were used to assess the total and direct effects of blood lipid on psoriasis risk.
SVMR estimates in primary data of blood lipid showed low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (odds ratio (OR): 1.11, 95%, confidence interval (CI): 0.99-1.25,
= 0.082 in stage 1; OR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.05-1.26,
= 0.002 in stage 2; OR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.04-1.26,
= 0.006 in stage 3) and triglycerides (TG) (OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.10-1.35,
= 1.17E-04 in stage 1; OR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.06-1.24,
= 0.001 in stage 2; OR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.05-1.24,
= 0.002 in stage 3) had a highly robust causal relationship on the risk of psoriasis. However, there were no robust causal associations between HDL-C and psoriasis. The SVMR results in secondary data of blood lipid were consistent with the primary data. Reverse MR analysis showed a causal association between psoriasis and LDL-C (beta: -0.009, 95% CI: -0.016- -0.002,
= 0.009) and HDL-C (beta: -0.011, 95% CI: -0.021- -0.002,
= 0.016). The reverse causation analyses results between psoriasis and TG did not reach significance. In MVMR of primary data of blood lipid, the LDL-C (OR: 1.05, 95% CI: 0.99-1.25,
= 0.396 in stage 1; OR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.01-1.14,
= 0.017 in stage 2; OR: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.02-1.15,
= 0.012 in stage 3) and TG (OR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.01-1.22,
= 0.036 in stage 1; OR: 1.09, 95% CI: 1.03-1.15,
= 0.002 in stage 2; OR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.01-1.13
= 0.015 in stage 3) positively correlated with psoriasis, and there had no correlation between HDL-C and psoriasis. The results of the secondary analysis were consistent with the results of primary analysis.
Mendelian randomization (MR) findings provide genetic evidence for causal link between psoriasis and blood lipid. It may be meaningful to monitor and control blood lipid level for a management of psoriasis patients in clinic.

Wear fault diagnosis in hydro-turbine via the incorporation of the IWSO algorithm optimized CNN-LSTM neural network

When a hydropower unit operates in a sediment-laden river, the sediment accelerates hydro-turbine wear, leading to efficiency loss or even shutdown. Therefore, wear fault diagnosis is crucial for its safe and stable operation. A hydro-turbine wear fault diagnosis method based on improved WT (wavelet threshold algorithm) preprocessing combined with IWSO (improved white shark optimizer) optimized CNN-LSTM (convolutional neural network-long-short term memory) is proposed. The improved WT algorithm is utilized to denoise the preprocessing of the original signals. Chaotic mapping, bird flock search, and cosine elite variation strategies are introduced to enhance the WSO algorithm's robust performance, and the CNN-LSTM model's hyperparameters are optimized using the IWSO algorithm to improve the diagnostic performance. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the proposed method reaches 96.2%, which is 8.9% higher than that of the IWSO-CNN-LSTM model without denoising. The study also found that the diagnostic accuracy of hydro-turbine wear faults increased with increasing sediment concentration in the water. This study can supplement the existing hydro-turbine condition monitoring and fault diagnosis system. Meanwhile, diagnosing wear faults in hydro-turbines can improve power generation efficiency and quality and minimize resource consumption.

In vivo synergistic tumor therapies based on copper sulfide photothermal therapeutic nanoplatforms

Tumor cells may be eliminated by increasing their temperature. This is achieved via photothermal therapy (PTT) by penetrating the tumor tissue with near‐infrared light and converting light energy into heat using photothermal agents. Copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs) are commonly used as PTAs in PTT. In this review, we aimed to discuss the synergism between tumor PTT with CuS NPs and other therapies such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, dynamic therapies (photodynamic, chemodynamic, and sonodynamic therapy), immunotherapy, gene therapy, gas therapy, and magnetic hyperthermia. Furthermore, we summarized the results obtained with a combination of two treatments and at least two therapies, with PTT as one of the included therapies. Finally, we summarized the benefits and drawbacks of various therapeutic options and state of the art CuS‐based PTT and provided future directions for such therapies.

We theoretically study the tunneling dynamics of two interacting spin–orbit-coupled (SOC) atoms trapped in a periodically perturbed double-well potential. We find that the phenomenon of coherent destruction of tunneling (CDT) can exist only for certain values of SOC, and two different mechanisms for the appearance of CDT are identified in this system. One is the conventional CDT resulting from quasi-energy degeneracy, while the other CDT originates from the dark Floquet state with zero quasi-energy for all values of the driving parameters. We discover that under double modulation combining the double-well potential shaking and a time-periodic Zeeman field, it is possible to realize spin-flipping single-atom Rabi tunneling and the CDT induced by the dark Floquet state at any value of SOC strength, which is not accessible with a single-drive field. Furthermore, we show that the detuning of Zeeman field with respect to the multiphoton energy is particularly significant in the case of the correlated two-particle tunneling mediated by SOC. We expect that these results will stimulate further exploration of the many-body dynamics in the interacting systems and expand the possibilities for manipulating the spin dynamics.
