Evolutionary computation
2022
Expensive optimization problem (EOP) widely exists in various significant real-world applications. However, EOP requires expensive or even unaffordable costs for evaluating candidate solutions, which is expensive for the algorithm to find a satisfactory solution. Moreover, due to the fast-growing application demands in the economy and society, such as the emergence of the smart cities, the internet of things, and the big data era, solving EOP more efficiently has become increasingly essential in various fields, which poses great challenges on the problem-solving ability of optimization approach for EOP. Among various optimization approaches, evolutionary computation (EC) is a promising global optimization tool widely used for solving EOP efficiently in the past decades. Given the fruitful advancements of EC for EOP, it is essential to review these advancements in order to synthesize and give previous research experiences and references to aid the development of relevant research fields and real-world applications. Motivated by this, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive survey to show why and how EC can solve EOP efficiently. For this aim, this paper firstly analyzes the total optimization cost of EC in solving EOP. Then, based on the analysis, three promising research directions are pointed out for solving EOP, which are problem approximation and substitution, algorithm design and enhancement, and parallel and distributed computation. Note that, to the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first that outlines the possible directions for efficiently solving EOP by analyzing the total expensive cost. Based on this, existing works are reviewed comprehensively via a taxonomy with four parts, including the above three research directions and the real-world application part. Moreover, some future research directions are also discussed in this paper. It is believed that such a survey can attract attention, encourage discussions, and stimulate new EC research ideas for solving EOP and related real-world applications more efficiently.

A survey on evolutionary computation for complex continuous optimization
2022
Complex continuous optimization problems widely exist nowadays due to the fast development of the economy and society. Moreover, the technologies like Internet of things, cloud computing, and big data also make optimization problems with more challenges including Many-dimensions, Many-changes, Many-optima, Many-constraints, and Many-costs. We term these as 5-M challenges that exist in large-scale optimization problems, dynamic optimization problems, multi-modal optimization problems, multi-objective optimization problems, many-objective optimization problems, constrained optimization problems, and expensive optimization problems in practical applications. The evolutionary computation (EC) algorithms are a kind of promising global optimization tools that have not only been widely applied for solving traditional optimization problems, but also have emerged booming research for solving the above-mentioned complex continuous optimization problems in recent years. In order to show how EC algorithms are promising and efficient in dealing with the 5-M complex challenges, this paper presents a comprehensive survey by proposing a novel taxonomy according to the function of the approaches, including reducing problem difficulty, increasing algorithm diversity, accelerating convergence speed, reducing running time, and extending application field. Moreover, some future research directions on using EC algorithms to solve complex continuous optimization problems are proposed and discussed. We believe that such a survey can draw attention, raise discussions, and inspire new ideas of EC research into complex continuous optimization problems and real-world applications.

Histone H3K4me3 modification is a transgenerational epigenetic signal for lipid metabolism in Caenorhabditis elegans
2022
As a major risk factor to human health, obesity presents a massive burden to people and society. Interestingly, the obese status of parents can cause progeny’s lipid accumulation through epigenetic inheritance in multiple species. To date, many questions remain as to how lipid accumulation leads to signals that are transmitted across generations. In this study, we establish a nematode model of
C. elegans
raised on a high-fat diet (HFD) that leads to measurable lipid accumulation, which can transmit the lipid accumulation signal to their multigenerational progeny. Using this model, we find that transcription factors DAF-16/FOXO and SBP-1/SREBP, nuclear receptors NHR-49 and NHR-80, and delta-9 desaturases (
fat-5
,
fat-6
, and
fat-7
) are required for transgenerational lipid accumulation. Additionally, histone H3K4 trimethylation (H3K4me3) marks lipid metabolism genes and increases their transcription response to multigenerational obesogenic effects. In summary, this study establishes an interaction between a network of lipid metabolic genes and chromatin modifications, which work together to achieve transgenerational epigenetic inheritance of obesogenic effects.
Transgenerational inheritance (TEI) mechanisms are to some extent conserved across species, but how TEI mediates lipid accumulation is unknown. Here the authors reveal that a network of lipid metabolic genes and chromatin modifications mediated by transcription factors and H3K4 trimethylation work together to achieve multigenerational obesogenic effects in C. elegans fed with a high-fat diet.

Facilitators to doctoral completion among international students in a Global South University: An appreciative inquiry perspective
2026
In the context of the global knowledge economy, the Global South has emerged as an increasingly important destination for doctoral education, yet research on this phenomenon remains scarce. The present study addresses this research gap by investigating the factors that contribute to the successful completion of doctoral programs among international students from the Global South enrolled at a public research university in Malaysia. Employing the Appreciative Inquiry approach, this study conducted semi-structured interviews with 11 international doctoral graduates. Findings reveal that intrinsic factors, such as passion for research, perseverance, and self-discipline, are crucial for success. External factors, including support from supervisors, institutions, families, and friends, also play a significant role. Furthermore, the Global South participants in this study called for improving conditions for future cohorts and fostering cross-cultural understanding within South-South doctoral education, where resource constraints and uneven institutional support often necessitate mutual aid and solidarity, a dimension largely overlooked in studies focused on Global Northern higher education systems with more robust infrastructure. The study contributes to understanding doctoral experiences in the Global South, challenges the dominance of a northern-centric perspective in academic research, and offers practical implications for institutions seeking to enhance support for doctoral students.

The findings identified a regulatory axis central to mycobacterial acid adaptation, and DasR was found to be a conserved c-di-AMP receptor in Mycobacterium tuberculosis . A key feature is its highly pH-sensitive binding to c-di-AMP, which exhibits a 20-fold increase in affinity under acidic conditions, indicating that environmental cues are linked to the transcriptional response. DasR directly targets genes governing (p)ppGpp, cyclic AMP (cAMP), c-di-AMP metabolism, and acid adaptation, creating a feedback loop that dynamically balances stress signaling pathways. The concurrent upregulation of the chaperone HtpG stabilizes the DasR complex, increasing signal output under stress. This integrated system, which combines allosteric enhancement of DNA binding with chaperone-mediated stabilization, constitutes an evolutionarily refined strategy for acid resistance. The c-di-AMP–DasR pathway is therefore a promising target that could enable researchers to address the persistence of M. tuberculosis .

This study proposes a new method to evaluate the effectiveness of orebody grade estimations, drawing upon the analysis of existing evaluation methods for grade estimation. This new approach addresses factors such as uneven sampling and asymmetric estimation range, which are challenging to overcome with existing evaluation techniques. The core principle of this method involves documenting how frequently individual samples are used during grade estimation and calculating the total distance weights for each sample. Subsequently, the usage frequency and total weight of the samples are standardized, and these standardized values are weighted based on the sample grades. A comparison is made between the weighted sample grades and the estimated grades, with the closeness between the two serving as a metric for assessing the effectiveness of the estimation. This study compares the new evaluation method to the direct comparison and cross-validation methods, examining the effectiveness of grade estimation using the inverse distance weighting (IDW) method. The findings revealed that: (1) The new evaluation method theoretically accounts for the systematic deviation between the statistical measures of estimated and sample grades resulting from uneven sample distribution, offering a fresh approach for enhancing the effectiveness of orebody grade estimation. (2) In the grade estimation of experimental Fe samples, the frequency of usage and the sum of distance weights were unequal. This inequality significantly contributes to the systematic deviation between the estimated and sample grades. (3) Comparing the new evaluation method to others confirms the stability and reliability of the new approach for evaluating the effectiveness of orebody grade estimation. This novel method demonstrates theoretical advantages and practical utility. (4) The deviation between the estimated grades and the statistical results of sample grades is influenced by the distribution pattern of sample grades, the spatial relationship between samples and estimation blocks, and the inherent systematic error associated with the IDW method. This systematic error cannot be overlooked.
