2019
By employing China’s provincial panel data covering period 2001–2016, the present study empirically investigates the impact of ICT on CO
2
emission intensity. Specifically, this paper utilizes Internet penetration and mobile phone penetration as proxies to measure ICT respectively and employs quantile regression method to estimate the benchmark model at five quantiles (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 0.9). It is demonstrated that Internet penetration at the national level has a significant negative effect on the CO
2
emission intensity for all quantiles. In addition, Internet penetration has a significant negative effect on CO
2
emission intensity at all quantiles except for 0.1 quantile for China’s eastern provinces and has a significant negative effect on CO
2
emission intensity at all quantiles for China’s central provinces, whereas Internet penetration has no significant negative impact on CO
2
emission intensity at all quantiles for China’s western provinces. By comparison, the reduction effect of Internet penetration on CO
2
emission intensity in China’s eastern and central provinces is more obvious and in contrast with the reduction effect of Internet penetration on CO
2
emission intensity in China’s eastern provinces, it is greater in China’s central provinces. Finally, the impact of mobile phone penetration on CO
2
emission intensity is generally consistent with the impact of Internet penetration. This study provides further evidence that developing countries can simultaneously achieve economic development and reduce carbon emissions through ICT.

Improved pharmacodynamics of epidermal growth factor via microneedles-based self-powered transcutaneous electrical stimulation
2022
Epidermal growth factor is an excellent drug for promoting wound healing; however, its conventional administration strategies are associated with pharmacodynamic challenges, such as low transdermal permeability, reduction, and receptor desensitization. Here, we develop a microneedle-based self-powered transcutaneous electrical stimulation system (mn-STESS) by integrating a sliding free-standing triboelectric nanogenerator with a microneedle patch to achieve improved epidermal growth factor pharmacodynamics. We show that the mn-STESS facilitates drug penetration and utilization by using microneedles to pierce the stratum corneum. More importantly, we find that it converts the mechanical energy of finger sliding into electricity and mediates transcutaneous electrical stimulation through microneedles. We demonstrate that the electrical stimulation applied by mn-STESS acts as an “adjuvant” that suppresses the reduction of epidermal growth factor by glutathione and upregulates its receptor expression in keratinocyte cells, successfully compensating for receptor desensitization. Collectively, this work highlights the promise of self-powered electrical adjuvants in improving drug pharmacodynamics, creating combinatorial therapeutic strategies for traditional drugs.
The use of epidermal growth factor for wound healing is limited by transdermal permeability, reduction, and receptor desensitization. Here the authors develop a microneedle-based self-powered transcutaneous electrical stimulation system to overcome these challenges.

Advances in ultra-high temperature ceramics, composites, and coatings
2022
Ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are generally referred to the carbides, nitrides, and borides of the transition metals, with the Group IVB compounds (Zr & Hf) and TaC as the main focus. The UHTCs are endowed with ultra-high melting points, excellent mechanical properties, and ablation resistance at elevated temperatures. These unique combinations of properties make them promising materials for extremely environmental structural applications in rocket and hypersonic vehicles, particularly nozzles, leading edges, and engine components, etc. In addition to bulk UHTCs, UHTC coatings and fiber reinforced UHTC composites are extensively developed and applied to avoid the intrinsic brittleness and poor thermal shock resistance of bulk ceramics. Recently, highentropy UHTCs are developed rapidly and attract a lot of attention as an emerging direction for ultra-high temperature materials. This review presents the state of the art of processing approaches, microstructure design and properties of UHTCs from bulk materials to composites and coatings, as well as the future directions.

Determinants and governance of unused rural residential bases in the context of Rural Revitalisation in China
2025
The issue of unused rural residential bases in China, particularly in areas like Xin’an Town, challenges efficient land use and rural revitalisation goals. Historical practices, including the inheritance of multiple home sites per household (“one household, many homes”) and inconsistent enforcement of policies like “one household, one residence,” have led to significant land idleness. Farmers’ limited awareness of collective land ownership laws also contributes to this inefficiency. This study combines field investigation, questionnaire surveys, and binary logistic regression analysis to identify key factors contributing to the unused rural residential bases. Field observation involved direct visits to the study area to gather qualitative insights into the socio-cultural factors influencing land use. Additionally, household surveys were conducted through interviews and questionnaires to collect quantitative data on family size, income levels, income sources, and policy awareness. The logistic regression model was then used to quantitatively assess these variables’ impact on unused rural residential bases. The analysis reveals that family size, income, and income sources are significant determinants of unused rural residential bases. Larger families tend to use land more actively, whereas higher-income households and those with non-agricultural income sources exhibit higher rates of idleness due to a greater tendency for urban migration. Policy awareness alone was found to be insufficient in incentivising effective land use. To reduce unused rural residential bases and promote efficient use, the study recommends (1) compulsory recovery and clearance of abandoned land; (2) financial incentives for releasing inherited unused land; (3) development of local industries to create jobs and reduce migration; and (4) stricter enforcement of land-use policies with enhanced community awareness efforts. These measures support the goals of Rural Revitalisation.

The role of mesenchymal stem cell-derived EVs in diabetic wound healing
2023
Diabetic foot is one of the most common complications of diabetes, requiring repeated surgical interventions and leading to amputation. In the absence of effective drugs, new treatments need to be explored. Previous studies have found that stem cell transplantation can promote the healing of chronic diabetic wounds. However, safety issues have limited the clinical application of this technique. Recently, the performance of mesenchymal stem cells after transplantation has been increasingly attributed to their production of exocrine functional derivatives such as extracellular vesicles (EVs), cytokines, and cell-conditioned media. EVs contain a variety of cellular molecules, including RNA, DNA and proteins, which facilitate the exchange of information between cells. EVs have several advantages over parental stem cells, including a high safety profile, no immune response, fewer ethical concerns, and a reduced likelihood of embolism formation and carcinogenesis. In this paper, we summarize the current knowledge of mesenchymal stem cell-derived EVs in accelerating diabetic wound healing, as well as their potential clinic applications.

Does High-Speed Rail Promote Enterprises Productivity? Evidence from China
2019
High-speed rail (HSR) is often claimed to bring different regions and cities closer together by shortening travel times, which can reduce the costs and increase enterprises productivity to promote a sustainable economy. However, another view argues that HSR transfers economic activities from peripheral cities to core cities, resulting in unbalanced regional economic development and damaging the sustainability of the economy. Based on microdata from China, this paper empirically investigates the impact of HSR on the enterprises productivity in both core cities and peripheral cities and explores the impact mechanism from the perspective of allocation effect and distribution effect caused by HSR. The results show that the connection of HSR positively affects the enterprises productivity in core cities, while it negatively affects the enterprises productivity in peripheral cities, with effect values of 1.38% and -8.45%, respectively. The conclusion still holds after endogenous treatment and multiple robustness tests are conducted. Additionally, the allocation effect analysis shows that the market access caused by HSR has an optimization effect on the resource allocation efficiency of both core cities and peripheral cities. The distribution effect analysis reveals that the distribution of enterprise productivity in peripheral cities has market heterogeneity, regional heterogeneity, and location heterogeneity. The important policy significance of this paper is that, in order to promote the sustainable development of enterprises and the economy, it should reduce policy restrictions and promote the effective flow of capital and talents, carry out the dislocation development of industry for peripheral cities, and “build a nest to attract the phoenix.”
