Decatungstate-catalyzed radical disulfuration through direct C-H functionalization for the preparation of unsymmetrical disulfides
2022
Unsymmetrical disulfides are widely found in the areas of food chemistry, pharmaceutical industry, chemical biology and polymer science. Due the importance of such disulfides in various fields, general methods for the nondirected intermolecular disulfuration of C-H bonds are highly desirable. In this work, the conversion of aliphatic C(sp

)-H bonds and aldehydic C(sp
2
)-H bonds into the corresponding C-SS bonds with tetrasulfides (RSSSSR) as radical disulfuration reagents is reported. The decatungstate anion ([W

) as photocatalyst is used for C-radical generation via intermolecular hydrogen atom transfer in combination with cheap sodium persulfate (Na

) as oxidant. Herein a series of valuable acyl alkyl disulfides, important precursors for the generation of RSS-anions, and unsymmetrical dialkyl disulfides are synthesized using this direct approach. To demonstrate the potential of the method for late-stage functionalization, approved drugs and natural products were successfully C-H functionalized.
Despite the importance of unsymmetrical disulfides in various fields such as food chemistry, pharmaceutical industry, and polymer science, the nondirected intermolecular disulfuration of C-H bonds remains challenging. Here, the authors report the conversion of aliphatic C(sp

)-H bonds and aldehydic C(sp

–OH radical intermediate provides an ideal platform that mimics the reactivity of a ‘free’ hydrogen atom, and which can be directly transferred to closed-shell π systems, such as activated alkenes, unactivated alkenes, naphthalenes and quinoline derivatives. The resulting H adduct C radicals are eventually reduced by a thiol co-catalyst, leading to overall transfer hydrogenation of the π system, with the two H atoms of water ending up in the product. The thermodynamic driving force is the strong P=O bond formed in the phosphine oxide by-product. Experimental mechanistic studies and density functional theory calculations support the hydrogen atom transfer of the PR

–OH intermediate as a key step in the radical hydrogenation process.
Using a photocatalytic phosphine-mediated radical process under mild conditions enables direct hydrogen atom transfer to closed-shell π systems for activation of water.

Animal models of stroke
2021
Stroke is a devastating disease with high morbidity and mortality. Animal models are indispensable tools that can mimic stroke processes and can be used for investigating mechanisms and developing novel therapeutic regimens. As a heterogeneous disease with complex pathophysiology, mimicking all aspects of human stroke in one animal model is impossible. Each model has unique strengths and weaknesses. Models such as transient or permanent intraluminal thread occlusion middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) models and thromboembolic models are the most commonly used in simulating human ischemic stroke. The endovascular filament occlusion model is characterized by easy manipulation and accurately controllable reperfusion and is suitable for studying the pathogenesis of focal ischemic stroke and reperfusion injury. Although the reproducibility of the embolic model is poor, it is more convenient for investigating thrombolysis. Rats are the most frequently used animal model for stroke. This review mainly outlines the stroke models of rats and discusses their strengths and shortcomings in detail.

Energy–structure coupling mechanism and damage evolution model of red sandstone during soaking–softening process
2026
To reveal how different soaking times affect red sandstone’s softening characteristics, this study analyzed red sandstone’s mineral composition, meso-structure, mechanical properties, and energy evolution laws. A damage constitutive model was established based on mechanical property testing and microstructure determination experiments of rock samples. It considers the initial compaction nonlinear section. The prediction bias in the energy dissipation theory damage model during the compaction stage was corrected based on the correction coefficient. The deterioration of mechanical properties of rock samples is positively correlated with immersion time. The results showed that water soaking caused feldspar, calcite, and other minerals to dissolve. It also reduced clay minerals and made pore development more intense. The mechanical properties of rock samples gradually decrease. This happened as soaking duration increased. When the soaking time reached 150 days, the cumulative deterioration degrees reached 44.25% and 30.78% respectively. The turning point of dissipated energy moved forward. The growth inflection point of the damage variable also advanced. The rock sample damage model fitted well with the experimental curve. It could accurately characterize the softening process. The research results explained the “time–structure–energy–damage” coupling mechanism. This mechanism applies to red sandstone softening under water–rock interactions. The explanation covered both macro and meso perspectives. It provided key theoretical support for red sandstone engineering stability assessment and long-term service safety.

Acetic acid is an important bulk chemical that is currently produced via methanol carbonylation using fossil based CO. Synthesis of acetic acid from the renewable and cheap CO

is of great importance, but state of the art routes encounter difficulties, especially in reaction selectivity and activity. Here we report a route to produce acetic acid from CO

, methanol and H

. The reaction can be efficiently catalysed by Ru–Rh bimetallic catalyst using imidazole as the ligand and LiI as the promoter in 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone (DMI) solvent. It is confirmed that methanol is hydrocarboxylated into acetic acid by CO

and H

, which accounts for the outstanding reaction results. The reaction mechanism is proposed based on the control experiments. The strategy opens a new way for acetic acid production and CO

transformation, and represents a significant progress in synthetic chemistry.
Industrial routes to acetic acid use carbon monoxide for the carbonylation of methanol. Here, the authors report a hydrocarboxylation method that instead uses carbon dioxide and hydrogen for the conversion of methanol into acetic acid.

Background
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to global research to predict those who are at greatest risk of developing severe disease and mortality. The aim of this meta-analysis was to determine the associations between obesity and the severity of and mortality due to COVID-19.
Methods
We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and Web of Science databases for studies evaluating the associations of obesity with COVID-19.
Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using random- or fixed-effects models. Meta-regression analyses were conducted to estimate regression coefficients.
Results
Forty-six studies involving 625,153 patients were included. Compared with nonobese patients, obese patients had a significantly increased risk of infection.
(OR 2.73, 95% CI 1.53–4.87;

METTL3-mediated m6A modification of HDGF mRNA promotes gastric cancer progression and has prognostic significance
2020
ObjectiveN6-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA methylation and its associated methyltransferase METTL3 are involved in tumour initiation and progression via the regulation of RNA function. This study explored the biological function and clinical significance of METTL3 in gastric cancer (GC).DesignThe prognostic value of METTL3 expression was evaluated using tissue microarray and immunohistochemical staining analyses in a human GC cohort. The biological role and mechanism of METTL3 in GC tumour growth and liver metastasis were determined in vitro and in vivo.ResultsThe level of m6A RNA was significantly increased in GC, and METTL3 was the main regulator involved in the abundant m6A RNA modification. METTL3 expression was significantly elevated in GC tissues and associated with poor prognosis. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that METTL3 expression was an independent prognostic factor and effective predictor in human patients with GC. Moreover, METTL3 overexpression promoted GC proliferation and liver metastasis in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, P300-mediated H3K27 acetylation activation in the promoter of METTL3 induced METTL3 transcription, which stimulated m6A modification of HDGF mRNA, and the m6A reader IGF2BP3 then directly recognised and bound to the m6A site on HDGF mRNA and enhanced HDGF mRNA stability. Secreted HDGF promoted tumour angiogenesis, while nuclear HDGF activated GLUT4 and ENO2 expression, followed by an increase in glycolysis in GC cells, which was correlated with subsequent tumour growth and liver metastasis.ConclusionsElevated METTL3 expression promotes tumour angiogenesis and glycolysis in GC, indicating that METTL3 expression is a potential prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for human GC.

DPP-4 inhibitors are predicted to exert a protective effect on the progression of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We conducted this meta-analysis to investigate this hypothesis.
Four databases, namely, PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library, were used to identify studies on DPP-4 and COVID-19. The outcome indicators were the mortality of COVID-19. Funnel plots, Begg's tests and Egger's tests were used to assess publication bias.
Four articles were included with a total of 1933 patients with COVID-19 and type 2 diabetes. The use of DPP-4 inhibitors was negatively associated with the risk of mortality (odds ratio (OR) = 0.58 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.34-0.99).
DPP-4 inhibitors may improve the mortality of patients with COVID-19 and type 2 diabetes. As few relevant studies are available, more large-scale studies need to be performed.

Defect and Doping Co-Engineered Non-Metal Nanocarbon ORR Electrocatalyst
2021
HighlightsRecent advances of non-metal nanocarbon materials for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are comprehensively summarized in terms of co-engineering of heteroatom doping and defect inducing. The characteristics, ORR performance, and the related mechanism of non-metal nanocarbon are emphatically analyzed and discussed. The current issues and perspectives in developing carbon-based electrocatalysts from both of heteroatom doping and defect engineering are pointed out and proposed.Exploring low-cost and earth-abundant oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst is essential for fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Among them, non-metal nanocarbon with multiple advantages of low cost, abundance, high conductivity, good durability, and competitive activity has attracted intense interest in recent years. The enhanced ORR activities of the nanocarbons are normally thought to originate from heteroatom (e.g., N, B, P, or S) doping or various induced defects. However, in practice, carbon-based materials usually contain both dopants and defects. In this regard, in terms of the co-engineering of heteroatom doping and defect inducing, we present an overview of recent advances in developing non-metal carbon-based electrocatalysts for the ORR. The characteristics, ORR performance, and the related mechanism of these functionalized nanocarbons by heteroatom doping, defect inducing, and in particular their synergistic promotion effect are emphatically analyzed and discussed. Finally, the current issues and perspectives in developing carbon-based electrocatalysts from both of heteroatom doping and defect engineering are proposed. This review will be beneficial for the rational design and manufacturing of highly efficient carbon-based materials for electrocatalysis.

plasmonic sensor
2018
A plasmonic refractive index (RI) sensor based on metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide coupled with concentric double rings resonator (CDRR) is proposed and investigated numerically. Utilizing the novel supermodes of the CDRR, the FWHM of the resonant wavelength can be modulated, and a sensitivity of 1060 nm/RIU with high figure of merit (FOM) 203.8 is realized in the near-infrared region. The unordinary modes, as well as the influence of structure parameters on the sensing performance, are also discussed. Such plasmonic sensor with simple framework and high optical resolution could be applied to on-chip sensing systems and integrated optical circuits. Besides, the special cases of bio-sensing and triple rings are also discussed.
