Design and spatial pattern optimization for a sponge city using factor analysis and geographical statistics to restore urban resilience: A case study in a coastal area of China

The sponge city is a new concept of stormwater management for ecological city construction, which aims to restore water-cycle processes and reduce runoff. Cities in coastal districts are suffering from serious instability due to high population density, urbanization, and land-use changes. However, previous research contains few evaluations of balancing urban ecological indicators of sponge city performance, including geographical, environmental, economic, and social factors, and their effect on resilience at a macro level to develop low-impact development schemes. In this study, we developed an integrated framework using factor analysis, geographical statistics, multi-objective analysis, and remote sensing methods to extract the factors influencing sponge city resilience and to establish spatial pattern schemes. The results indicated that the urbanization degree and plant adaptability had the greatest impact on sponge city performance, with weights of 45 and 27%, respectively. Sponge city spatial pattern schemes performed the best in the combination scenario of 14.8–46.8% green roofs (by area ratio) supported by grooves and rain barrels +10% herbaceous basins divided into units by ecological tree pools +10% permeable pavements and sidewalks. This scenario balanced facilities and cost to optimize the spatial pattern, which improved sponge city adaptability and urban ecological conditions.

Characterization of Groundwater Dynamics and Their Response Mechanisms to Different Types of Compound Stress in a Typical Hilly Plain Area

Groundwater is a crucial source of water supply and an important ecological element globally. Research on the dynamic characteristics of groundwater and their causative mechanisms is fundamental to objectively evaluating groundwater resources and their sustainable utilization. Based on the large amount of hydrogeological data collected and analyzed in typical hilly plain areas, a multi-factor weighted comprehensive evaluation system (MFWCES) based on GIS was used to evaluate the response of groundwater dynamics to combined stress elements in Tangshan City. The study area is located in the plains and hilly regions of Tangshan City. The evaluation system was based on seven influencing factors, including hydraulic conductivity, soil media, aquifer thickness, depth of groundwater, land use type, extraction intensity of groundwater, and groundwater evaporation. The results of groundwater dynamics in the study area were obtained by weighted comprehensive evaluation, with their score size ranging from 2.4 to 12.7. The spatial distribution of groundwater dynamics was classified into four categories: rapid response (10.3–12.7), dual response to precipitation and anthropogenic extraction (9.6–10.3), delayed response (7.6–9.6), and strong superimposed response to human activities (2.4–7.6). The related conclusions will provide key references for regional water resource planning, ecological protection, and the development of differentiated groundwater management strategies under compound stress.

Significance in Numerical Simulation and Optimization Method Based on Multi-Indicator Sensitivity Analysis for Low Impact Development Practice Strategy

Evaluating the performance of sponge city practices under actual conditions is essential for managing urban stormwater. Existing studies in urban stormwater management have rarely employed numerical simulations to model hydrological processes under actual Three-Dimensional (3D) conditions. In this study, a numerical computational model is developed to simulate the hydrological processes and reveal the temporal and spatial variation of runoff in relation to impervious surfaces and concave herbaceous fields. The applicability of the 3D modules was evaluated using the Chicago rain pattern formula under three recurrence periods: precipitation within one, five, and ten years. The results indicate that the thickness and slope of planting soil are the most sensitive factors regarding sponge city performance, with comprehensive factors of 0.754 and 0.461. The optimal structural parameters of the concave herbaceous field were obtained as follows: aquifer height, 200 mm; planting soil thickness, 600 mm; planting soil slope, 1.5%; planting soil porosity, 0.45; overflow pipeline porosity, 0.3. The flood peak reduction rate, delay rate, and total runoff control rate were the best in a recurrence period of 5a, with 88.93%, 51.11%, and 78.76%, respectively. This study offers technical and conformed methodological support for simulating water quantity processes in sponge cities, and for the control of waterlogging and the recycling of runoff.

Based on the comprehensive analysis of the heat sources of the motorized spindle system, the thermal loads, including the heat generation of bearing friction and the electromagnetic loss of the built-in motor, are carried out for a machining center motorized spindle system. And then, the convective heat transfer coefficients of the whole spindle system are analyzed. The thermal characteristics of the motorized spindle system are calculated by finite element analysis. The steady state temperature field distribution of the motorized spindle is obtained. It provides some references for improving the thermal characteristics of the motorized spindle and reducing the difficulty of thermal error compensation.

Cybervictimization and Adolescent Internet Addiction: A Moderated Mediation Model

Previous research indicates that cybervictimization can lead to adolescent Internet addiction; however, there is a gap in the knowledge about the mediating and moderating variables facilitating this relationship. This study examines the role of rejection sensitivity as a mediator in this relationship and the role of parent–adolescent communication as a moderator for this mediation effect among Chinese adolescents. Participants were 1006 adolescents (M = 13.16 years, SD = 0.67), who completed the questionnaires anonymously. The questionnaires assessed the four variables of interest. Descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling were used for data analysis. The results show that the positive association between cybervictimization and adolescent Internet addiction is mediated by rejection sensitivity. Moreover, this indirect effect is stronger for adolescents with low parent–adolescent communication than for those with high parent–adolescent communication.

Polyamines (PAs) and ethylene are involved in the modulation of plant growth and development. However, their roles in fruit-set, especially in exogenous gibberellin (GA3)-induced grape parthenocarpic berries, and the related competitive action mode are poorly understood. For this, we, here performed their content determination, bioinformatics and expression pattern analysis of genes to identify the key ones in the competitive network of polyamines metabolic and ethylene biosynthesis (PMEB) pathways. The content of putrescine (Put) significantly increased; while 1-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid (ACC) sharply decreased during the fruit-set process of GA3-induced grape parthenocarpic seedless berries. Totally, twenty-five genes in PMEB pathways, including 20 polyamines metabolic (PM) genes and 5 ethylene biosynthesis (EB) ones were identified in grape, of which 8 PM and 2 EB genes possessed the motifs responsive to phytohormone GA. The expression levels of most PMEB genes kept changing during grape fruit-set generating a competitive action mode of GA3-mediated two metabolic fluxes toward PAs and ethylene synthesis. Exogenous GA3 might enhance grape fruit-set of parthenocarpic berries via up-regulation of VvSAMS4, VvSAMDC1/2, VvODC1, VvSPDS1, and VvPAO1 to promote PAs accumulation, whereby repressing the ethylene synthesis by down-regulation of VvACS1 and VvACO2. Our findings provide novel insights into GA3-mediated competitive inhibition of ethylene by PAs to promote the fruit-set of parthenocarpic berries in grape, which has important implications for molecular breeding of seedless grape with high fruit-setting rate.

Systematic Review, Meta-Analysis and Bioinformatic Analysis of Biomarkers for Prognosis of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

In previous studies, non-invasive diagnostic biomarkers showed great benefit in the early-stage diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). However, the accuracy of different biomarkers was controversial. In this study, meta-analysis and bioinformatics analysis were conducted to compare the accuracy of the following three biomarkers and explore the relationship between the gene expression levels and MPM. A systematic search of meta-analysis was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library to identify relevant studies from the inception to March 2021. QUADAS-2 for Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies was used to evaluate the quality of eligible studies. The meta-analysis was performed utilizing Stata 15.0 and Review Manager 5.4 software. The meta-analysis results showed that 31 studies that involved 8750 participants were included. The pooled sensitivity and specificity (SPE) were 0.90 (95% CI: 0.74, 0.97) and 0.91 (95% CI: 0.84, 0.95) for Fibulin-3, 0.66 (95% CI, 0.51–0.78) and 0.91 (95% CI, 0.82–0.96) for mesothelin (MSLN), 0.68 (95% CI: 0.63,0.73) and 0.86 (95% CI: 0.82,0.90) for soluble mesothelin-related peptides (SMRP), and 0.74 (95% CI, 0.66-0.80) and 0.89 (95% CI, 0.85–0.91) for MSLN + SMRP + Fibulin-3. Compared with the other two biomarkers, Fibulin-3 may be more appropriate to be one of the indicators for combined diagnosis. Bioinformatics analysis showed that the low expression level of the MSLN gene was significantly related to longer survival time and better prognosis of MPM patients. However, considering the limitation in the quality and sample size of the included research, further studies are required.

Characterization and Potential Action Mode Divergences of Homologous ACO1 Genes during the Organ Development and Ripening Process between Non-Climacteric Grape and Climacteric Peach

Ethylene is one crucial phytohormone modulating plants’ organ development and ripening process, especially in fruits, but its action modes and discrepancies in non-climacteric grape and climacteric peach in these processes remain elusive. This work is focused on the action mode divergences of ethylene during the modulation of the organ development and ripening process in climacteric/non-climacteric plants. We characterized the key enzyme genes in the ethylene synthesis pathway, VvACO1 and PpACO1, and uncovered that their sequence structures are highly conserved, although their promoters exhibit important divergences in the numbers and types of the cis-elements responsive to hormones, implying various responses to hormone signals. Subsequently, we found the two have similar expression modes in vegetative organ development but inverse patterns in reproductive ones, especially in fruits. Then, VvACO1 and PpACO1 were further validated in promoting fruit ripening functions through their transient over-expression/RNAi-expression in tomatoes, of which the former possesses a weaker role than the latter in the fruit ripening process. Our findings illuminated the divergence in the action patterns and function traits of the key VvACO1/PpACO1 genes in the tissue development of climacteric/non-climacteric plants, and they have implications for further gaining insight into the interaction mechanism of ethylene signaling during the modulation of the organ development and ripening process in climacteric/non-climacteric plants.
