Institutional Dynamics and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in an Emerging Country Context: Evidence from China

This study identifies unique corporate social responsibility (CSR) dimensions and develops a framework to analyze different levels of institutional dynamics in understanding CSR in China. Based on multiple case studies of 16 firms, the article examines the CSR philosophy and approach in China's emerging market. The findings suggest that Chinese CSR understanding is largely grounded in the context of ethical and discretionary actions. This focus is mainly attributed to the dominant role of ethical leadership, governmental dependency, and cultural traditions in Chinese CSR. Moreover, the weakness or the absence of conducive social normative environment and positive peer pressure, and misalignment between CSR and organizational design further contribute to a lack of systemic and institutionalized approach to CSR in China. Our study implies that CSR is still evolving at a preliminary stage in China, and institutional infrastructure and cultural ethics are exerting abiding influence on CSR approach in the emerging economies. The article also suggests the implications for practice and policy making.

The field of regenerative medicine has tremendous potential for improved treatment outcomes and has been stimulated by advances made in bioengineering over the last few decades. The strategies of engineering tissues and assembling functional constructs that are capable of restoring, retaining, and revitalizing lost tissues and organs have impacted the whole spectrum of medicine and health care. Techniques to combine biomimetic materials, cells, and bioactive molecules play a decisive role in promoting the regeneration of damaged tissues or as therapeutic systems. Hydrogels have been used as one of the most common tissue engineering scaffolds over the past two decades due to their ability to maintain a distinct 3D structure, to provide mechanical support for the cells in the engineered tissues, and to simulate the native extracellular matrix. The high water content of hydrogels can provide an ideal environment for cell survival, and structure which mimics the native tissues. Hydrogel systems have been serving as a supportive matrix for cell immobilization and growth factor delivery. This review outlines a brief description of the properties, structure, synthesis and fabrication methods, applications, and future perspectives of smart hydrogels in tissue engineering.

Organ-on-A-chip (OoAC) devices are miniaturized, functional, in vitro constructs that aim to recapitulate the in vivo physiology of an organ using different cell types and extracellular matrix, while maintaining the chemical and mechanical properties of the surrounding microenvironments. From an end-point perspective, the success of a microfluidic OoAC relies mainly on the type of biomaterial and the fabrication strategy employed. Certain biomaterials, such as PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane), are preferred over others due to their ease of fabrication and proven success in modelling complex organ systems. However, the inherent nature of human microtissues to respond differently to surrounding stimulations has led to the combination of biomaterials ranging from simple PDMS chips to 3D-printed polymers coated with natural and synthetic materials, including hydrogels. In addition, recent advances in 3D printing and bioprinting techniques have led to the powerful combination of utilizing these materials to develop microfluidic OoAC devices. In this narrative review, we evaluate the different materials used to fabricate microfluidic OoAC devices while outlining their pros and cons in different organ systems. A note on combining the advances made in additive manufacturing (AM) techniques for the microfabrication of these complex systems is also discussed.

Space between products on display: the impact of interspace on consumer estimation of product size
2021
This research examines the effect that leaving space between products has on consumers’ estimation of product size. We theorize and empirically confirm that when space is left between products (i.e., the display is interspaced), consumers are better able to distinguish the product from the environment, which results in more attention being devoted to the product, and, in turn, larger estimation of the product’s size. Furthermore, we demonstrate downstream outcomes (i.e., consumer choices, purchase intentions) of the effect of interspatial product display on product size estimates; that is consumers react more favorably to products that are displayed in an interspatial product display when their product usage goals require large-sized products. Meanwhile, non-interspatial product displays are preferred when consumers holding a consumption goal geared to a small product size. Finally, we validate and solidify these novel interspace effects in both advertising and retailing contexts via a series of six studies including five different product types (e.g., shampoo, food, water bottle).

Hotspots and Frontiers in Inflammatory Tumor Microenvironment Research: A Scientometric and Visualization Analysis

Methods:
Articles on inflammatory tumor microenvironment were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection, and the characteristics of the articles were analyzed by CiteSpace software.
Background:
The inflammatory tumor microenvironment is an essential feature of the tumor microenvironment. The way in which it promotes or inhibits tumor progression plays an important role in the outcome of a tumor treatment. This research aims to explore a scientific collaboration network, describe evolution of hotspots, and predict future trends through bibliometric analysis.
Results:
A total of 3,534 papers published by 390 institutions in 81 countries/regions were screened, and the annual quantity has been increasing rapidly in the past decades. United States was the leading country and has the most productive institutions in this field. The research topics were mainly focused on inflammation and immunity mediated by crucial factors as well as the mechanisms of angiogenesis. Additionally, the development and application of nanoparticles is currently a novel research frontier with bright prospect.
Conclusion:
The present scientometric study provides an overview of inflammatory tumor microenvironment research over the previous decades using quantitative and qualitative methods, and the findings of this study can provide references for researchers focusing on tumor treatment.

Facing the \Right\ Side? The Effect of Product Facing Direction

Product image display in advertising plays an important role in consumer perception and behavior. In this research, we establish important downstream consequences of one significant aspect of product image display-facing direction-on product evaluations. Building on the literature of visuospatial attention and grounded cognition, we show that products with their images facing toward the left (versus right) in advertising are evaluated more favorably when consumers' temporal focus is on the past, whereas the reverse holds true when consumers focus on the future. Furthermore, we establish that the impact of facing direction on product evaluations exists regardless of the horizontal position of product images. In addition, we demonstrate that for products higher on desirability features, a mismatch (versus match) between facing direction and consumers' temporal focus leads to higher product evaluations, whereas the reverse holds true for products higher on feasibility features. Important implications for advertising theory and practice are discussed.

Genome of a novel Fangshan bunya-like virus identified in mosquitoes from Shandong Province, China

Mosquitoes are important vectors of a wide range of viruses and serve as pivotal vectors with complex ecological functions that facilitate the transmission of these pathogens between hosts, such as humans, through biting behavior. In the mosquito surveillance conducted in Weifang and Yantai cities of Shandong Province, genetic material of a novel virus, temporarily named Fangshan bunya-like virus, was detected. From 3013 female mosquitoes, genetic material was detected in 9 pools (infection rate: 0.30%) using qRT-PCR and nested PCR. Analysis of the distances between pairs revealed a significant level of nucleotide similarity among these amplified sequences. Phylogenetic analysis placed Fangshan bunya-like virus within the Mobuvirus genus, Phenuiviridae family, clustering with Pyongtaek Culex Bunyavirus and indicating a common ancestor. The genomic characteristics and phylogenetic classification of Fangshan bunya-like virus offered valuable insights into the diversity and evolution of Phenuiviridae among mosquito populations, despite the challenge of not having isolated the live virus.

Inspired by an ancient Chinese Medicine prescription: the modern significance and potential of Yiyi Fuzi Baijiang San in treating diseases

Classic Formulas (Jing fang) are considered the essence and authority of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) due to their long history and proven efficacy. These formulas play a pivotal role in all kinds of different disease prevention and therapeutic strategies. Yiyi Fuzi Baijiang San (YYFZBJS), one of the Classic Formulas, was originally developed for the treatment of chronic intestinal abscess. With the accumulation of clinical experience and the exploration of modern pharmacological research in recent years, YYFZBJS has been extensively employed to address a broad spectrum of conditions such as colorectal cancer. Although numerous studies have explored the clinical efficacy and underlying mechanisms of YYFZBJS, no comprehensive review summarizing these findings exists to date. This study aims to systematically review and critically assess the current clinical and mechanistic research on YYFZBJS, with the objective of providing valuable insights and guidance for TCM research in the future.

Identification of Jingmen tick virus (JMTV) in Amblyomma testudinarium from Fujian Province, southeastern China

Background
Jingmen tick virus (JMTV) is a newly discovered tick-borne virus that can cause disease in humans. This virus has been authenticated as being extremely widespread worldwide and as posing a significant threat to public health and safety.
Methods
We collected 35 ticks belonging to two tick species from wild boars in Nanping, Fujian Province, China. JMTV-specific genes were amplified by qRT-PCR and nested PCR to confirm the presence of this pathogen.
Results
More than one third of of all ticks collected (11/35) were positive for JMTV. Viral sequences were obtained from three of the JMTV-positive ticks, including the complete genomic sequence from one tick. This was the first time that JMTV was identified in the hard-bodied tick
Amblyomma testudinarium
. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that JMTV from Fujian Province shared > 90% identity with other isolates derived from China, but was distinct from those reported in France and Cambodia.
Conclusions
JMTV is characterized by relatively low mutations and has its own local adaptive characteristics in different regions. Our findings provide molecular evidence of the presence of JMTV in an overlooked tick species from an area not unrecognized as being endemic. They also suggest that JMTV occupies a wider geographical distribution than currently believed and is a potential disease vector.

Recent advances in the development and application of colorectal cancer mouse models

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a significant global health challenge, necessitating the development of reliable preclinical models to advance mechanistic understanding and therapeutic innovation. This review comprehensively examines the diverse spectrum of rodent models employed in CRC research, focusing on their unique characteristics, applications, and translational relevance. We systematically evaluate conventional models, including carcinogen-induced models and genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs), which have been instrumental in elucidating tumorigenic pathways and genetic drivers. Furthermore, we highlight the emergence of patient-derived xenografts (PDX) as a transformative tool for recapitulating tumor heterogeneity and predicting clinical responses. The review also explores metastatic models, which are critical for studying advanced disease, and spontaneous models that mimic natural tumor progression. Additionally, we discuss the growing utility of composite animal models, which integrate multiple methodologies to better reflect the complexity of human CRC. By comparing the strengths and limitations of each model system, this review provides a framework for selecting appropriate models based on specific research objectives. Collectively, these preclinical platforms have significantly advanced our understanding of CRC biology and continue to drive the development of targeted therapies and personalized treatment strategies.
