We investigated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) environmental contamination in 2 rooms of a quarantine hotel after 2 presymptomatic persons who stayed there were laboratory-confirmed as having coronavirus disease. We detected SARS-CoV-2 RNA on 8 (36%) of 22 surfaces, as well as on the pillow cover, sheet, and duvet cover.

Global trend of diabetes mortality attributed to vascular complications, 2000–2016

Background
The global epidemic of diabetes mellitus continues to grow and affects developed and developing countries alike. Intensive glycemic control is thought to modify the risks for vascular complications, hence the risks for diabetes-related death. We investigated the trend of diabetic vascular complication-related deaths between 2000 and 2016 in the global diabetes landscape.
Methods
We collected 17 years of death certificates data from 108 countries in the World Health Organization mortality database between 2000 and 2016, with coding for diabetic complications. Crude and age-standardized proportions and rates were calculated. Trend analysis was done with annual average percentage change (AAPC) of rates computed by joinpoint regression.
Results
From 2000 through 2016, 7,108,145 deaths of diabetes were reported in the 108 countries. Among them, 26.8% (1,904,787 cases) were attributed to vascular complications in damaged organs, including the kidneys (1,355,085 cases, 71.1%), peripheral circulatory (515,293 cases, 27.1%), nerves (28,697 cases, 1.5%) and eyes (5751 cases, 0.3%). Overall, the age-standardized proportion of vascular complication-related mortality was 267.8 [95% confidence interval (95% CI), 267.5–268.1] cases per 1000 deaths and the rate was 53.6 (95% CI 53.5–53.7) cases per 100,000 person-years. Throughout the 17-year period, the overall age-standardized proportions of deaths attributable to vascular complications had increased 37.9%, while the overall age-standardized mortality rates related to vascular complications had increased 30.8% (AAPC = 1.9% [1.4–2.4%, p < 0.05]). These increases were predominantly driven by a 159.8% increase in the rate (AAPC = 2.7% [1.2–4.3%, p < 0.05]) from renal complications. Trends in the rates and AAPC of deaths varied by type of diabetes and of complications, as well as by countries, regions and domestic income.
Conclusion
Diabetic vascular complication-related deaths had increased substantially during 2000–2016, mainly driven by the increased mortality of renal complications.

Tregs: Where We Are and What Comes Next?

Regulatory T cells are usually recognized as a specialized subset of CD4
T cells functioning in establishment and maintenance of immune tolerance. Meanwhile, there is emerging evidence that regulatory T cells (Tregs) are also present in various non-lymphoid tissues, and that they have unique phenotypes credited with activities distinct from regulatory function. Their development and function have been described in plenty of manuscripts in the past two decades. However, with the deepening of research in recent years, emerging evidence revealed some novel mechanisms about how Tregs exert their activities. First, we discuss the expanding family of regulatory lymphocytes briefly and then, try to interpret how fork-head box P3 (Foxp3), a master regulator of the regulatory pathway in the development and function of regulatory T cells, functions. Subsequently, another part of our focus is varieties of tissue Tregs. Next, we primarily discuss recent research on how Tregs work and their faceted functions in terms of soluble mediators, functional proteins, and inhibitory receptors. In particular, unless otherwise noted, the term \"Treg\" is used here to refer specially to the \"CD4

Catalytic polymer self-cleavage for CO2 generation before combustion empowers materials with fire safety

Polymeric materials, rich in carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen elements, present substantial fire hazards to both human life and property due to their intrinsic flammability. Overcoming this challenge in the absence of any flame-retardant elements is a daunting task. Herein, we introduce an innovative strategy employing catalytic polymer auto-pyrolysis before combustion to proactively release CO
2
, akin to possessing responsive CO
2
fire extinguishing mechanisms. We demonstrate that potassium salts with strong nucleophilicity (such as potassium formate/malate) can transform conventional polyurethane foam into materials with fire safety through rearrangement. This transformation results in the rapid generation of a substantial volume of CO
2
, occurring before the onset of intense decomposition, effectively extinguishing fires. The inclusion of just 1.05 wt% potassium formate can significantly raise the limiting oxygen index of polyurethane foam to 26.5%, increase the time to ignition by 927%, and tremendously reduce smoke toxicity by 95%. The successful application of various potassium salts, combined with a comprehensive examination of the underlying mechanisms, underscores the viability of this strategy. This pioneering catalytic approach paves the way for the efficient and eco-friendly development of polymeric materials with fire safety.
Overcoming this challenge of fire hazards by carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen rich materials remains challenging. Here, the authors demonstarte that catalytic polymer auto-pyrolysis before combustion releases CO2, equipping the material with fire retardant properties.

Copper plays vital roles in numerous cellular processes and its imbalance can lead to oxidative stress and dysfunction. Recent research has unveiled a unique form of copper-induced cell death, termed cuproptosis, which differs from known cell death mechanisms. This process involves the interaction of copper with lipoylated tricarboxylic acid cycle enzymes, causing protein aggregation and cell death. Recently, a growing number of studies have explored the link between cuproptosis and cancer development. This review comprehensively examines the systemic and cellular metabolism of copper, including tumor-related signaling pathways influenced by copper. It delves into the discovery and mechanisms of cuproptosis and its connection to various cancers. Additionally, the review suggests potential cancer treatments using copper ionophores that induce cuproptosis, in combination with small molecule drugs, for precision therapy in specific cancer types.

Longitudinal study on the change trend of serum alkaline phosphatase and its possible influencing factors in peritoneal dialysis patients

The aim of the study was to analyze the change trend of serum ALP over time and identify factors influencing its levels in peritoneal dialysis patients. Then to investigate the impact of serum ALP changes on calcium and phosphorus metabolism in single peritoneal dialysis center utilizing repeated measurement data. A retrospective cohort study was conducted with a total follow-up duration of 30 months. Serum ALP and other biomarkers, including calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), 25(OH)D, intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), albumin(ALB), and hemoglobin(Hb) were measured every 3 months. The generalized estimation equation (GEE) was utilized to analyze the change trend of serum ALP over time, and to assess whether there were differences in changes over time between different genders and different primary disease groups. Additionally, factors influencing serum ALP levels were analyzed, and the impact of serum ALP changes on calcium and phosphorus metabolism was also explored. A total of 34 patients were included in the study. Serum ALP and other indicators were measured repeatedly, with a maximum of 8 times and a minimum of 4 times. The median of serum ALP values at all measurement times for all selected patients was 89 U/L. The GEE analysis revealed that serum ALP gradually increased with time, and patients in diabetes group increased faster than those in non-diabetes group. A positive correlation was observed between serum ALP and dialysis duration, also between serum ALP and hemoglobin. However, variations in serum ALP did not significantly affect serum corrected calcium, phosphorus, or iPTH concentrations. The serum ALP levels of peritoneal dialysis patients increase gradually over time, and the concentrations are influenced by dialysis duration. The changes in serum ALP values do not have a significant impact on serum calcium, phosphorus, and iPTH levels.

MRI-based radiomics model for preoperative prediction of 5-year survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Background
Recurrence is the major cause of mortality in patients with resected HCC. However, without a standard approach to evaluate prognosis, it is difficult to select candidates for additional therapy.
Methods
A total of 201 patients with HCC who were followed up for at least 5 years after curative hepatectomy were enrolled in this retrospective, multicentre study. A total of 3144 radiomics features were extracted from preoperative MRI. The random forest method was used for radiomics signature building, and five-fold cross-validation was applied. A radiomics model incorporating the radiomics signature and clinical risk factors was developed.
Results
Patients were divided into survivor (
n
= 97) and non-survivor (
n
= 104) groups based on the 5-year survival after surgery. The 30 most survival-related radiomics features were selected for the radiomics signature. Preoperative AFP and AST were integrated into the model as independent clinical risk factors. The model demonstrated good calibration and satisfactory discrimination, with a mean AUC of 0.9804 and 0.7578 in the training and validation sets, respectively.
Conclusions
This radiomics model is a valid method to predict 5-year survival in patients with HCC and may be used to identify patients for clinical trials of perioperative therapies and for additional surveillance.

Novel immune‐related signature for risk stratification and prognosis in prostatic adenocarcinoma

A substantial proportion of prostatic adenocarcinoma (PRAD) patients experience biochemical failure (BCF) after radical prostatectomy (RP). The immune microenvironment plays a vital role in carcinogenesis and the development of PRAD. This study aimed to identify a novel immune‐related gene (IRG)‐based signature for risk stratification and prognosis of BCF in PRAD. Weighted gene coexpression network analysis was carried out to identify a BCF‐related module in a discovery cohort of patients who underwent RP at the Massachusetts General Hospital. The median follow‐up time was 70.32 months. Random forest and multivariate stepwise Cox regression analyses were used to identify an IRG‐based signature from the specific module. Risk plot analyses, Kaplan‐Meier curves, receiver operating characteristic curves, univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses, stratified analysis, and Harrell’s concordance index were used to assess the prognostic value and predictive accuracy of the IRG‐based signature in the internal discovery cohort; The Cancer Genome Atlas database was used as a validation cohort. Tumor immune estimation resource database analysis and CIBERSORT algorithm were used to assess the immunophenotype of PRAD. A novel IRG‐based signature was identified from the specific module. Five IRGs (BUB1B, NDN, NID1, COL4A6, and FLRT2) were verified as components of the risk signature. The IRG‐based signature showed good prognostic value and predictive accuracy in both the discovery and validation cohorts. Infiltrations of various immune cells were significantly different between low‐risk and high‐risk groups in PRAD. We identified a novel IRG‐based signature that could function as an index for assessing tumor immune status and risk stratification in PRAD. Assessing failure pressure is critical in determining pipeline integrity. Current research primarily concerns the buckling performance of pressurized pipelines subjected to a bending load or axial compression force, with some also looking at the failure pressure of corroded pipelines. However, there is currently a lack of limit state models for pressurized pipelines with bending moments and axial forces. In this study, based on the unified yield criterion, we propose a limit state equation for steel pipes under various loads. The most common operating loads on buried pipelines are bending moment, internal pressure, and axial force. The proposed limit state equation for intact pipelines is based on a three-dimensional pipeline stress model with complex load coupling. Using failure data, we investigate the applicability of various yield criteria in assessing the failure pressure of pipelines with complex loads. We show that the evaluation model can be effectively used as a theoretical solution for assessing the failure pressure in such circumstances and for selecting appropriate yield criteria based on load condition differences.
Assessing failure pressure is critical in determining pipeline integrity. In this study, based on the unified yield criterion, authors propose a limit state equation for steel pipes under various loads which can be converted into a series of failure pressure evaluation models for pipeline with different yield criteria.

The aim of this study was used meta-analysis to investigate changes of serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).
Relevant literatures were identified from PubMed, Cochrane Library, CNKI, WanFang and Chinese-Cqvip databases (published from January 1, 1999 to September 30, 2016). Eligible reports were included for pooled analysis of serum TNF-α level and subgroup analysis was performed in relation with age, disease duration and ethnicity.
A total of 23 articles (1631 T1DM cases, 1429 healthy controls) were included for this meta-analysis. Compared with the controls, the patients had significantly increased serum TNF-α level (P < 0.001). Similar results were also found among all subgroup analysis of different age, disease duration and ethnicity (with the exception of Asian) (all P < 0.05). Regression analysis indicated that age (P = 0.680), disease duration (P = 0.957), and ethnicity (P = 0.526) of patients were not significant impact factors for the high heterogeneity. The results were stable according to the sensitivity analysis and no publication bias existed in this meta-analysis.
Serum TNF-α level in T1DM patients has significantly elevated among all age, disease duration and ethnicity groups.
