Advances in thiosemicarbazone metal complexes as anti-lung cancer agents
The great success of cisplatin as a chemotherapeutic agent considerably increased research efforts in inorganic biochemistry to identify more metallic drugs having the potential of treating lung cancer. Metal coordination centres, which exhibit a wide range of coordination numbers and geometries, various oxidised and reduced states and the inherent ligand properties offer pharmaceutical chemists a plethora of drug structures. Owing to the presence of C=N and C=S bonds in a thiosemicarbazone Schiff base, N and S atoms in its hybrid orbital has lone pair of electrons, which can generate metal complexes with different stabilities with most metal elements under certain conditions. Such ligands and complexes play key roles in the treatment of anti-lung cancer. Research regarding metallic anti-lung cancer has advanced considerably, but there remain several challenges. In this review, we discuss the potential of thiosemicarbazone Schiff base complexes as anti-lung cancer drugs, their anti-cancer activities and the most likely action mechanisms involving the recent families of copper, nickel, platinum, ruthenium and other complexes.
Explore the expression of mitochondria-related genes to construct prognostic risk model for ovarian cancer and validate it, so as to provide optimized treatment for ovarian cancer
The use of gene development data from public database has become a new starting point to explore mitochondrial related gene expression and construct a prognostic prediction model of ovarian cancer. Data were obtained from the TCGA and ICGC databases, and the intersection with mitochondrial genes was used to obtain the differentially expressed genes. q-PCR, Cox proportional risk regression, minimal absolute contraction and selection operator regression analysis were performed to construct the prognostic risk model, and ROC curve was used to evaluate the model for centralized verification. The association between risk scores and clinical features, tumor mutation load, immune cell infiltration, macrophage activation analysis, immunotherapy, and chemosensitivity was further evaluated. A prognostic risk score model for ovarian cancer patients was constructed based on 12 differentially expressed genes. The score was highly correlated with ovarian cancer macrophage infiltration and was a good predictor of the response to immunotherapy. M1 and M2 macrophages in the ovarian tissue in the OV group were significantly activated, providing a reference for the study of the polarity change of tumor-related macrophages for the prognosis and treatment of ovarian cancer. In terms of drug sensitivity, the high-risk group was more sensitive to vinblastine, Acetalax, VX-11e, and PD-0325901, while the low-risk group was more sensitive to Sabutoclax, SB-505124, cisplatin, and erlotinib. The prognostic risk model of ovarian cancer associated to mitochondrial genes built on the basis of public database better evaluated the prognosis of ovarian cancer patients and guided individual treatment.
Advances in Small Molecular Agents against Oral Cancer
Oral cancer is a common malignancy with a high mortality rate. Although surgery is the best treatment option for patients with cancer, this approach is ineffective for advanced metastases. Molecular agents are irreplaceable in preventing and treating distant metastases. This review aims to summarise the molecular agents used for the treatment of oral cancer in the last decade and describe their sources and curative effects. These agents are classified into phenols, isothiocyanates, anthraquinones, statins, flavonoids, terpenoids, and steroids. The mechanisms of action of these agents include regulating the expression of cell signalling pathways and related proteases to affect the proliferation, autophagy, migration, apoptosis, and other biological aspects of oral cancer cells. This paper may serve as a reference for subsequent studies on the treatment of oral cancer.
Boron Trifluoride Etherate Promoted Regioselective 3-Acylation of Indoles with Anhydrides
An efficient, high-yielding and scalable procedure for the regioselective 3-acylation of indoles with anhydrides promoted by boron trifluoride etherate under mild conditions was reported. This novel protocol provided a simple way to prepare 3-(benzofuran-2-yl) indole in three steps.
Comparison of C-reactive protein/albumin ratio and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio with conventional biomarkers for predicting septic shock in pediatric sepsis
Background This study aimed to investigate the clinical utility of the C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR) and the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in evaluating the severity of sepsis in pediatric patients. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted involving 174 pediatric patients hospitalized between June 2022 and November 2025. Sepsis and septic shock were defined according to the 2024 Phoenix criteria. Patients were stratified into a sepsis group ( n  = 123) and a septic shock group ( n  = 51). CAR and NLR were calculated from blood samples collected within 24 h of admission. A two-sided p  < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Independent associated factors for septic shock were identified using binary logistic regression analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed, and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated to evaluate the diagnostic performance of CAR, NLR, and other relevant biomarkers. The study was conducted in accordance with the STROBE guidelines. Results Univariate analysis revealed significantly elevated white blood cell (WBC) count, CAR, and NLR levels in the septic shock group compared to the sepsis group (all p  < 0.05). Binary logistic regression analysis confirmed that elevated CAR (OR = 2.893, p  < 0.001) and NLR (OR = 1.232, p  < 0.001) were independent associated factors for progression to septic shock. ROC curve analysis demonstrated that a model combining CAR and NLR exhibited superior discriminative performance compared to either biomarker alone, with a higher AUC (0.802), sensitivity (74.50%), and specificity (74.80%). Conclusion CAR and NLR appear to be significant independent biomarkers for assessing severity and predicting septic shock in children with sepsis. The combination of CAR and NLR provides improved predictive accuracy compared with either marker alone, suggesting its potential utility in guiding early clinical decisions.
MIR210HG promotes the progression of pediatric pneumonia by inducing apoptosis and inflammation through downregulating miR-195-5p and upregulating FGF2
Objective If not diagnosed and treated promptly, children pneumonia (CP) can lead to severe complications and even become life-threatening. MIR210HG is highly expressed in pneumonia patients. This study primarily investigates its diagnostic value and potential regulatory mechanisms in CP. Methods A total of 108 patients with CP were enrolled. PPI network analysis identified target genes of miR-195-5p. RT-qPCR detected levels of MIR210HG, miR-195-5p, and FGF2. Pearson correlation analysis examined the relationship between MIR210HG and miR-195-5p. ROC curve analysis evaluated the diagnostic value of MIR210HG. Cell proliferation, apoptosis, and the expression levels of apoptosis-related genes (Bax, Bcl-2, and caspase-3) and proinflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β) were assessed using CCK-8 assays, flow cytometry, and RT-qPCR, respectively. DLR experiments validated the binding relationship between miR-195-5p and MIR210HG and FGF2. Results MIR210HG levels were significantly elevated in both serum and BALF, with AUC values of 0.876 and 0.884, respectively. MIR210HG bound to miR-195-5p and exhibited a negative correlation with its expression. MIR210HG levels were elevated in CP models. Knockdown of MIR210HG promoted cell proliferation, inhibited apoptosis, and alleviated inflammatory responses by upregulating miR-195-5p levels. Furthermore, FGF2 is a target of miR-195-5p and is highly expressed in CP patients. Conclusion MIR210HG shows promising diagnostic potential in CP patients. Our preliminary findings confirm that elevated MIR210HG may promote CP disease progression by downregulating FGF2 expression through miR-195-5p.
Performance of river sediments after flocculation-pressure filter membrane-vacuum preloading
The main problem in the reduction of river bottom sediments is to solve the dewatering of the sludge. The commonly used natural air drying method requires a large amount of time and economic cost. In this paper, different treatments were developed for the needs of the project, and related tests were carried out on the reduction of the sludge. Firstly, two or more flocculants were compounded according to the nature of the sludge. The 6 different treatments were determined according to the sedimentation and the turbidity value of the supernatant. Secondly, the dewatering test was carried out on river sediments after flocculation-vacuum preloading. The dewatering effect of different flocculants, water quality, dissipation of pore water pressure, vane shear strength, compression coefficient, and coefficient of consolidation have been analyzed after flocculation-vacuum preloading. The polysilicate aluminium ferric (PSAF) can greatly increase the dewatering efficiency of the filter press membrane, and the final dewatering amount could reach 310 g. The effect of purifying water quality was PSAF>PAM (polyacrylamide, PAM-1(18 million): PAM-2(23 million) = 3:7)>PAC (polyaluminium chloride). The PSAF and PAC could increase the pH of the water during the vacuum preloading test. The PAM has the best the vane shear strength. Lime could improve the vacuum preloading and the vane shear strength when it was added to other flocculants. The incorporation of PSAF could accelerate the dissipation and increase the final dissipation value of pores water pressure. Compared with PAM+PAC+lime, PAM+lime, PAM+PSAF+lime, PAM+PSAF, and PAM+PAC, the overall effect and price of the PAM is optimal.
Plant Growth Regulator Residues in Edible Mushrooms: Are They Hazardous?
Mushroom production and economic value on a global scale are significantly increasing. On the other hand, food safety has raised concerns; however, limited research exists on the presence of plant growth regulator (PGR) residues in edible mushrooms. Herein, this study appears to be the first to comprehensively investigate PGR residual characteristics and assess their associated dietary exposure risks to consumers. A total of 105 edible mushroom samples of seven different varieties were analyzed, and the overall detection rate was 81%. The residual level of PGRs ranged from below the limit of detection to 6.308 mg/kg. Among varieties, 100% of , Berk, and samples contained at least one PGR residue. Dietary exposure risks were assessed using both deterministic and probabilistic approaches. Calculated values of both %ADI (acceptable daily intake) and %ARfD (acute reference dose)were below 100 and do not indicate a potential health concern with respect to edible mushroom consumption. However, several PGRs had a relatively high %ADI or %ARfD value, suggesting that the Maximum Residual Limits (MRLs) and associated regulatory norms should be immediately established. This work not only provides valuable information for edible mushroom consumers but also an important reference for the risk management decision.
Ischemic stroke due to stylocarotid artery syndrome: a case report and review
Stylocarotid artery syndrome (SAS) is a rare variant of Eagle’s syndrome that may lead to transient ischemic attack or stroke. The underlying pathophysiological mechanism involves compression of the internal carotid artery by an elongated styloid process (ESP), potentially resulting in vascular occlusion or dissection. An ESP exceeding 2.5 cm is deemed elongated, with a length of 3.0 cm considered clinically significant. Although the prevalence of ESP ranges from 4.0% to 7.3%, symptomatic cases are rare; symptoms are present in only approximately 4.0% of individuals with an ESP. Unlike the typical symptoms of Eagle’s syndrome, SAS may not cause pharyngeal discomfort, the sensation of a foreign body in the throat, dysphagia, or facial pain. This absence of characteristic symptoms as well as the development of central nervous system symptoms often leads patients to seek care from neurologists instead of otolaryngologists, increasing the likelihood of misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis. We herein report a unique case of ischemic stroke caused by SAS and present a literature review on cases of SAS-associated ischemic stroke published in the past decade. The reporting of this study conforms to the CARE guidelines.
Solidification effect of river bottom sediments after flocculation via different composite flocculants
The main problem in the reduction of river bottom sediments is to solve the dewatering of the rive sediments. The reduction of river bottom sediments is usually dehydrated by natural air drying and requires more time and economic costs. Different proportions of composite flocculants and curing agents have been developed to the reduction of river bottom sediments according to the requirements of the project. Two or more flocculants were mixed with the rive sediments. Therefore, anionic polyacrylamide (PAM), polyaluminum chloride (PAC), polysilicate aluminum ferric (PSAF), and iron perchloride (IC) were selected for flocculation of river sediments. Through the sedimentation column test, the relationship between sedimentation amount and time was plotted, the turbidity value and pH value of the supernatant filtration supernatant were detected, and the flocculation effect of different flocculants was evaluated to obtain suitable groups of composite flocculants. The optimum ratio of two types of polyacrylamide with a molecular weight of 18 million and 23 million was 3:7. The turbidity of the supernatant of water could well be reduced by adding polysilicate aluminum ferric. Finally, the 6 groups of composite flocculants were determined according to the sedimentation and the turbidity value of the supernatant. The relative water content was maintained at about 60% before and after flocculation. At the same curing age, the compressive strength increased as the amount of curing agent increased after flocculation. At the same curing agent dosage, the overall solidification effect was reduced with increase of curing time after flocculation.
