Microwave-Assisted Extraction, Purification, Partial Characterization, and Bioactivity of Polysaccharides from Panax ginseng
Polysaccharides are a main active substance in Panax ginseng; however, microwave-assisted extraction used to prepare P. ginseng polysaccharides (MPPG) has rarely been reported, and knowledge of the bactericidal activity of P. ginseng polysaccharides remains low. Thus, this study was designed to investigate the extraction of P. ginseng polysaccharides by using two methods—hot water extraction and microwave-assisted extraction—and compare their chemical composition and structure. In addition, their antibacterial and antioxidant activities were also determined. The data implied that P. ginseng polysaccharides extracted by microwave-assisted extraction possessed a higher extraction yield than hot water extraction (WPPG) under optimized conditions, and the actual yields were 41.6% ± 0.09% and 28.5% ± 1.62%, respectively. Moreover, the preliminary characterization of polysaccharides was identified after purification. The WPPG with the molecular weight (Mw) of 2.07 × 105 Da was composed of Man, Rib, Rha, GalA, Glu, Gal, and Arab, and the typical characteristics of polysaccharides were determined by IR spectra. Compared with WPPG, MPPG had a higher Mw, uronic acid content, and Glu content. More importantly, the antioxidant activity of MPPG was higher than WPPG, which was probably ascribed to its highly Mw and abundant uronic acid content. Besides, both of them exhibited high bactericidal activity. These results demonstrate that microwave-assisted extraction is an effective method for obtaining P. ginseng polysaccharides, and MPPG could be applied as an antioxidant and antibacterial agent.

Population dynamics and seasonal migration patterns of Spodoptera exigua in northern China based on 11 years of monitoring data
The beet armyworm, (Hübner), is an important agricultural pest worldwide that has caused serious economic losses in the main crop-producing areas of China. To effectively monitor and control this pest, it is crucial to investigate its population dynamics and seasonal migration patterns in northern China. In this study, we monitored the population dynamics of using sex pheromone traps in Shenyang, Liaoning Province from 2012 to 2022, combining these data with amigration trajectory simulation approach and synoptic weather analysis. There were significant interannual and seasonal variations in the capture number of and the total number of exceeded 2,000 individuals in 2018 and 2020. The highest and lowest numbers of were trapped in September and May, accounting for 34.65% ± 6.81% and 0.11% ± 0.04% of the annual totals, respectively. The average occurrence period was 140.9 ± 9.34 days during 2012-2022. In addition, the biomass of also increased significantly during these years. The simulated seasonal migration trajectories also revealed varying source regions in different months, primarily originated from Northeast China and East China. These unique insights into the migration patterns of will contribute to a deeper understanding of its occurrence in northern China and provide a theoretical basis for regional monitoring, early warning, and the development of effective management strategies for long-range migratory pests.
A Novel Frequency-Selective Surface-Enhanced Composite Honeycomb Absorber with Excellent Microwave Absorption
Multifunctional structures with excellent wave-absorbing and load-bearing properties have attracted much attention in recent years. Unlike other wave-absorbing materials, honeycomb wave-absorbing materials have appealing radar absorption and mechanical properties. However, the existing honeycomb wave-absorbing materials have problems such as narrow absorption band and poor compression resistance. In this study, a novel frequency selective surface-enhanced composite honeycomb absorbers (FSS-CHAs) are fabricated by combining a honeycomb structure with wonderful load-bearing capacity and FSS through screen-printing and inlay-locking techniques. After reflectivity measurements, the effective absorption band (RL < −10 dB) of CHA is 6.25–17.47 GHz and a bandwidth of 11.22 GHz, the effective absorption band of the FSS-CHA is 3.96–18 GHz and a bandwidth of 14.04 GHz, 25.13% improvement compared to the CHA, the mechanism of wave absorption is explained using transmission line theory. The simulation results show that the wide bandwidth is due to the different absorption mechanisms of FSS-CHA at low and high frequencies. The compression test shows that the compression strength of FSS-CHA is 17.10 MPa. In addition, FSS-CHA has a low cost of only USD 270.7/m2. This study confirms the possibility of combining FSS with radar-absorbing honeycombs, which provides a reference for the design of future broadband wave-absorbing structures, offers a novel approach to integrating FSS with CHA, and aims to optimize their efficacy and utility in stealth technology.

In addition, we also reveal relevant relations of various special cases of our main results involving some known results.
Transcriptome analyses revealed molecular responses of Cynanchum auriculatum leaves to saline stress
Cynanchum auriculatum is a traditional herbal medicine in China and can grow in saline soils. However, little is known in relation to the underlying molecular mechanisms. In the present study, C. auriculatum seedlings were exposed to 3.75‰ and 7.5‰ salinity. Next, transcriptome profiles of leaves were compared. Transcriptome sequencing showed 35,593 and 58,046 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in treatments with 3.75‰ and 7.5‰, compared with the control, respectively. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses of these DEGs enriched various defense-related biological pathways, including ROS scavenging, ion transportation, lipid metabolism and plant hormone signaling. Further analyses suggested that C. auriculatum up-regulated Na + /H + exchanger and V-type proton ATPase to avoid accumulation of Na + . The flavonoid and phenylpropanoids biosynthesis pathways were activated, which might increase antioxidant capacity in response to saline stress. The auxin and ethylene signaling pathways were upregulated in response to saline treatments, both of which are important plant hormones. Overall, these results raised new insights to further investigate molecular mechanisms underlying resistance of C. auriculatum to saline stress.
Age-related decline in melatonin contributes to enhanced osteoclastogenesis via disruption of redox homeostasis
Background Increased oxidative stress contributes to enhanced osteoclastogenesis and age-related bone loss. Melatonin (MT) is an endogenous antioxidant and declines with aging. However, it was unclear whether the decline of MT was involved in the enhanced osteoclastogenesis during the aging process. Methods The plasma level of MT, oxidative stress status, bone mass, the number of bone marrow-derived monocytes (BMMs) and its osteoclastogenesis were analyzed in young (3-month old) and old (18-month old) mice (n = 6 per group). In vitro, BMMs isolated from aged mice were treated with or without MT, followed by detecting the change of osteoclastogenesis and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level. Furthermore, old mice were treated with MT for 2 months to investigate the therapeutic effect. Results The plasma level of MT was markedly lower in aged mice compared with young mice. Age-related decline in MT was accompanied by enhanced oxidative stress, osteoclastogenic potential and bone loss. MT intervention significantly suppressed the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclastogenesis, decreased intracellular ROS and enhanced antioxidant capacity of BMMs from aged mice. MT supplementation significantly attenuated oxidative stress, osteoclastogenesis, bone loss and deterioration of bone microstructure in aged mice. Conclusions These results suggest that age-related decline of MT enhanced osteoclastogenesis via disruption of redox homeostasis. MT may serve as a key regulator in osteoclastogenesis and bone homeostasis, thereby highlighting its potential as a preventive agent for age-related bone loss.
Melatonin ameliorates age-related sarcopenia by inhibiting fibrogenic conversion of satellite cell
The fibrogenic conversion of satellite cells contributes to the atrophy and fibrosis of skeletal muscle, playing a significant role in the pathogenesis of age-related sarcopenia. Melatonin, a hormone secreted by the pineal gland, exhibits anti-aging and anti-fibrotic effects in various conditions. However, the effect of melatonin on satellite cell fate and age-related sarcopenia remains under-explored. Here, we report that melatonin treatment mitigated the loss of muscle mass and strength in aged mice, replenished the satellite cell pool and curtailed muscle fibrosis. When primary SCs were cultured in vitro and subjected to aging induction via d -galactose, they exhibited a diminished myogenic potential and a conversion from myogenic to fibrogenic lineage. Notably, melatonin treatment effectively restored the myogenic potential and inhibited this lineage conversion. Furthermore, melatonin attenuated the expression of the fibrogenic cytokine, transforming growth factor-β1, and reduced the phosphorylation of its downstream targets Smad2/3 both in vivo and in vitro. In summary, our findings show melatonin's capacity to counteract muscle decline and inhibit fibrogenic conversion in aging SCs and highlight its potential therapeutic value for age-related sarcopenia. Market segmentation and energy efficiency—an empirical study based on China’s provincial panel data
Based on the perspective of market segmentation, this paper empirically tests the impact mechanism of market segmentation on energy efficiency by using China’s provincial panel data from 2005 to 2016. The results show that market segmentation has a significant inhibitory effect on energy efficiency by distorting technological progress, scale efficiency, and allocation efficiency. The conclusion of this paper not only provides an important theoretical basis for promoting the reform of China’s economic system, but also brings some enlightenment for other developing countries to choose ways to improve energy efficiency.
Parametric Study of Sinusoidal Rib Turbulators for Heat Transfer Enhancement in Turbine Blade Internal Cooling Channels
Higher turbine inlet temperatures improve cycle efficiency but intensify blade thermal loading, so internal passages rely on turbulators that raise convection within coolant pressure budgets. Streamwise sinusoidal ribs introduce curvature and spanwise phasing beyond straight transverse bars, yet reconciled multi-row thermal–hydraulic data for such layouts in high-aspect-ratio blade-cooling analogues remain scarce. Steady three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of turbulent airflow in a 4:1 rectangular channel with uniform heat flux on one ribbed wall are applied to compare nine parametric sinusoidal-rib layouts and one transverse baseline at bulk Reynolds numbers from 20,000 to 90,000. The normalized Nusselt number (Nu/Nu[sub.0]), Fanning friction factor (f/f[sub.0]), and composite thermal–hydraulic performance indices quantify the trade-off. Several layouts outperform the transverse baseline; a streamwise-increasing rib-height schedule achieves the highest pressure-drop-weighted index, whereas a large-amplitude uniform waviness gives the best heat-transfer-dominated index. The parametric matrix indicates when streamwise waviness merits further study in ribbed passage design.
