Intangible Cultural Heritage in Tourism: Research Review and Investigation of Future Agenda

Intangible cultural heritage (ICH) can be a valuable tourism resource for both government and local communities. However, the complex definition and the massive and fragmented nature of ICH data make it hard to review and conclude research trends and future directions of ICH tourism. In this study, 85 keywords extracted from ICH definitions are input in the Web of Science database before collecting papers indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index, the Arts and Humanities Citation Index, and the Conference Proceedings Citation Index-Social Science and Humanities. Later, a systematic literature review of 418 ICH tourism studies from 76 countries published between 2000 and 2021 were conducted based on three groups of questions. The findings mainly illustrated that: (1) Currently research in ICH tourism is mainly composed of three themes: resource planning and sustainability, the impact of tourism development, and tourist behavior and destination marketing; (2) topics related to food tourism, sacred knowledge, traditional management systems, traditional management systems, legends, and myths can achieve high impact; (3) in the last five years, scholars have reduced using the official full name of ICH in tourism studies, while the category of “social practices, rituals and festive events” has become a hot topic since 2010; (4) ecotourism, culinary tourism, festival tourism, and religious tourism are the most discussed in ICH tourism research, and they will still be intensive topics in near future; (5) future directions in ICH tourism research are resultant of three vectors: place making, technology, and environment. The results present a comprehensive picture of current popular ICH topics and predict future directions in the field of ICH tourism. The systematic review of literature can help contribute to both theoretical construction, heritage preservation, and tourism practices.

Can Live Streaming Save the Tourism Industry from a Pandemic? A Study of Social Media

As a reflection of shifting and fluid experiences in time and space, live streaming can reduce losses in the tourism industry associated with travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared with the use of live streaming activities in entertainment, shopping, sport, e-sport, religious, educational, and academic settings, the tourism context has yet to be explored. This study takes China as a case to examine tourism practices related to live streaming. Specifically, 48,114 social media posts were subjected to systematic content analysis. The dataset contained live streaming content related to 147 countries and 34 Chinese provincial administrative regions between 2010 and 2021. Findings revealed the following: (1) the development of tourism live streaming in China can be classified into germination, exploration, and opportunity stages; (2) live content mainly evoked positive emotions, whereas negative sentiment resulted from illegal or boring content; (3) users’ perceptions of tourism live streaming content involved institutions, live streaming tools, live streaming attractions, the live streaming economy, people, facilities and information, time, and regions; and (4) live streaming tools and attractions constituted the core of the identified semantic network and had the strongest regulation capabilities in tourism live streaming activities. Findings shed light on latent cultural meanings in social media communications, where tourism live streaming features high-frequency linguistic signs.

Novel insights and new therapeutic potentials for macrophages in pulmonary hypertension

Inflammation and immune processes underlie pulmonary hypertension progression. Two main different activated phenotypes of macrophages, classically activated M1 macrophages and alternatively activated M2 macrophages, are both involved in inflammatory processes related to pulmonary hypertension. Recent advances suggest that macrophages coordinate interactions among different proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators, and other cellular components such as smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts. In this review, we summarize the current literature on the role of macrophages in the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension, including the origin of pulmonary macrophages and their response to triggers of pulmonary hypertension. We then discuss the interactions among macrophages, cytokines, and vascular adventitial fibroblasts in pulmonary hypertension, as well as the potential therapeutic benefits of macrophages in this disease. Identifying the critical role of macrophages in pulmonary hypertension will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of this pathophysiological abnormality, and may provide new perspectives for pulmonary hypertension management.

Spatial Distribution Pattern and Influencing Factors of Sports Tourism Resources in China

Sports tourism is an emerging tourism product. In the sports and tourism industry, resource mining is the foundation that provides positive significance for theoretical support. This study takes China’s sports tourism boutique projects as the study object, exploring its spatial distribution pattern through the average nearest neighbor index, kernel density, and spatial autocorrelation. On the strength of the wuli–shili–renli system approach, the entropy value method and geographic detector probe model are used to identify the driving factors affecting the spatial distribution pattern. Findings reveal the following: (1) From 2013 to 2014, the sports tourism resources in China present a distribution pattern with the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration as the high-density core area and the Guizhou–Guangxi border area and the western Hubei ecological circle as the sub-density core areas. (2) From 2014 to 2018, China’s sports tourism boutique projects increased by 381, and the regional differences among various provinces tended to converge. The high-density core area remained unchanged. The sub-density cores are now the Yunqian border area of the Karst Plateau, the Qinglong border area of the Qilian Mountains, and the Jinji border area of the Taihang Mountains, shaping the distribution trends of “depending on the city, near the scenery” and “large concentration, small dispersion”. (3) The proportion of provincial sports tourism development classified as being in the coordinated stage is 61.29%. (4) The explanatory power of the factors affecting the spatial layout in descending order is natural resource endowment, sports resource endowment, transportation capacity, industrial support and guidance, market cultivation and development, people’s living standards, software and hardware services, and economic benefit effects. The explanatory power of the interaction of two different factors is higher than that of the single factor.

Using CT radiomic features based on machine learning models to subtype adrenal adenoma

Background
Functioning and non-functioning adrenocortical adenoma are two subtypes of benign adrenal adenoma, and their differential diagnosis is crucial. Current diagnostic procedures use an invasive method, adrenal venous sampling, for endocrinologic assessment.
Methods
This study proposes establishing an accurate differential model for subtyping adrenal adenoma using computed tomography (CT) radiomic features and machine learning (ML) methods. Dataset 1 (289 patients with adrenal adenoma) was collected to develop the models, and Dataset 2 (54 patients) was utilized for external validation. Cuboids containing the lesion were cropped from the non-contrast, arterial, and venous phase CT images, and 1,967 features were extracted from each cuboid. Ten discriminative features were selected from each phase or the combined phases. Random forest, support vector machine, logistic regression (LR), Gradient Boosting Machine, and eXtreme Gradient Boosting were used to establish prediction models.
Results
The highest accuracies were 72.7%, 72.7%, and 76.1% in the arterial, venous, and non-contrast phases, respectively, when using radiomic features alone with the ML classifier of LR. When features from the three CT phases were combined, the accuracy of LR reached 83.0%. After adding clinical information, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve increased for all the machine learning methods except for LR. In Dataset 2, the accuracy of LR was the highest, reaching 77.8%.
Conclusion
The radiomic features of the lesion in three-phase CT images can potentially suggest the functioning or non-functioning nature of adrenal adenoma. The resulting radiomic models can be a non-invasive, low-cost, and rapid method of minimizing unnecessary testing in asymptomatic patients with incidentally discovered adrenal adenoma.

The Post-Effects of the Authenticity of Rural Intangible Cultural Heritage and Tourists’ Engagement

Amidst the burgeoning interest in rural Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) tourism, this study, anchored in the Stimulus–Organism–Response (S–O–R) theoretical framework, chose Meizhou Island in Fujian Province as a case study to examine the impacts of tourists’ perceptions of authenticity and their engagement levels on the destination image and loyalty towards rural ICH tourism. Utilizing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to analyze survey data, findings revealed that higher perceptions of a destination’s preservation of original characteristics and traditional values correlate with a more favorable overall perception of the destination, albeit with smaller impact on emotional connections. Conversely, depth of tourist engagement was shown to enhance both understanding and emotional bonds with the destination. Further, familiarity with the destination was found to foster affection, thereby increasing the likelihood of repeat visits or recommendations. The more tourists know about a place, perceiving it as authentic, the more likely they are to remain loyal; similarly, deeper engagement enhances understanding and affection, increasing the probability of revisiting or recommending the place. These outcomes not only offer new insights into tourist behavior but also provide theoretical and practical guidance for the protection and development of rural ICH tourism, destination marketing, and management strategies, thus promoting the sustainable development of rural ICH tourism.

Development and Initial Validation of Healing and Therapeutic Design Indices and Scale for Measuring Health of Sub-Healthy Tourist Populations in Hot Spring Tourism

The built environment, technology, human health and well-being, and sustainable development are closely related, and human-centered therapeutic design in environmental, architectural, spatial, and landscape domains demonstrates human health promotion potential. This study examines health promotion design measurement indices and develops a scale for sub-healthy tourists in a hot spring tourism destination. Recent research mainly emphasized the development and utilization of hot spring resources and their economic benefits. It rarely provided a systematic discussion on the health-promoting impact of environmental design and evaluation criteria. Thus, this study employs the literature review method and the Delphi expert method to construct an index system and measurement scale that comprises 20 evaluation indices of physical, mental, and social health. Moreover, this study conducts a questionnaire survey to measure the physical, mental, and social health of sub-healthy tourists and non-sub-healthy tourists (observation and control groups) and the sub-healthy tourists before and after their visit to the hot spring tourism destination (pre-test group and post-test group). The scale demonstrates satisfactory reliability and validity, and the health–healing design measurement indices for the sub-healthy tourists consist of three subscales: physical, mental, and social health. The evaluation index system and measurement scale can comprehensively and effectively measure the effects of healing and therapeutic design (HTD) and can be used as reliable tools for sub-healthy tourists in hot spring tourism.

The impact of sharing physical activity experience on social network sites on residents’ social connectedness:a cross-sectional survey during COVID-19 social quarantine

Background
During isolation, sharing physical activity experiences on social network sites (SNS) can enhance individual social connectedness. The objective of the present study was to examine the associations between sharing physical activity experiences on SNS, positive self-presentation, positive feedback, and social connectedness during isolation.
Methods
Based on the Physical Activity Experience Sharing Scale, Social Connectedness Scale, Positive Self-Presentation Scale, and Online Positive Feedback Scale, we collected 460 questionnaires online from across 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China. We used multiple linear regression models to investigate the relationship between variables, and used bootstrapping to test for mediation..
Results
During isolation, sharing physical activity experiences was positively associated with social connectedness (b = 0.308,
p
< 0.001), as well as with positive self-presentation(b = 0.956,
p
< 0.001)and positive feedback(b = 0.421,
p
< 0.001). In addition,we found that positive self-presentation showed a significant positive impact on positive feedback (b = 0.563,
p
< 0.001), and that positive self-presentation(b = 0.331,
p
< 0.001) and positive feedback(b = 0.311,
p
< 0.001) were positively associated with social connectedness. Finally, we found an effect on sharing physical activity experiences indirectly through positive self-presentation (b = 0.316, 95% CI: [0.180, 0.463]),and positive feedback (b = 0.131, 95% CI: [0.063, 0.207]) and that the mediation chain between the two also had a significant impact on social connectedness (b = 0.167, 95% CI: [0.088, 0.251]).
Conclusions
During the COVID-19 pandemic, sharing physical activity experiences on SNS can create a positive, healthy, and energetic personal image, gain recognition from others, and establish new interpersonal relationships.

A Development Method for Load Adaptive Matching Digital Twin System of Bridge Cranes

Bridge cranes generally have a significant disparity between their actual service life and design life. If they are scrapped according to the design life, it is likely to result in resource wastage or pose potential safety hazards due to extended service. Existing studies have not thoroughly examined the coupling relationship among actual working conditions, structural damage, and load-matching strategies. It is difficult to achieve real-time and accurate adaptation between loads and the carrying capacity of equipment, and thus cannot effectively narrow this life gap. To this end, this paper defines a digital twin system framework for crane load adaptive matching, constructs a load adaptive matching optimization model, proposes a method for developing a digital twin system for bridge crane load adaptive matching, and builds a digital twin system platform centered on virtual-real mapping, IoT connectivity, and data interaction. Detailed experimental verification was conducted using the DQ40 kg-1.8 m-1.3 m light-duty bridge crane. The results demonstrate that this method and system can effectively achieve dynamic matching between the load and real-time carrying capacity. While ensuring the service life exceeds the design life, the difference between the two is controlled at around 3467 cycles, accounting for approximately 0.000462% of the design life. This significantly improves the equipment’s operational safety and resource utilization efficiency, breaks through the limitations of load reduction schemes formulated based on human experience under the traditional regular inspection mode, and provides a scientific load-matching decision-making basis and technical support for special equipment inspection institutions and users.

Short Videos Turn Everyone into Bearers of Traditional Sports and Games: A Mixed-Methods Study from China

The emergence of short video applications (“apps”) has facilitated the dissemination, inheritance, and protection of traditional sports and games (TSGs). However, the effectiveness of these apps in raising public awareness and responsibility toward the preservation and heritage of TSGs has received insufficient research attention. This study constructs a theoretical model based on value-belief-norm theory and the theory of planned behavior, employing both PLS-SEM and fsQCA methods to empirically analyze 417 questionnaires. The results indicate that the PLS-SEM method identifies key factors influencing users’ responsible behaviors toward TSGs on short video apps, along with the complex and interdependent relationships among these factors. The fsQCA method reveals the intricate interactions and nonlinear effects of the antecedents on users’ responsible behaviors and identifies six configurations that drive high-level TSG responsible behaviors among users. This paper extends research on public responsible behaviors concerning TSGs and provides important practical guidance for government managers, inheritors, and conservation entities in the protection and heritage of TSGs.
