2023
Large volumes of a potentially polluting effluent are generated during oil extraction, denominated production water or produced water (PW). PW is characterised by high concentrations of contaminants, such as COD, nitrogen and phosphorus, heavy metals, hydrocarbons and others. This review aims to analyse ex situ biological treatment methods using microorganisms for PW. There are several consolidated physical and chemical treatments of PW. However, they present high operation costs and may raise the final value of the product. Thus, the biological treatment of PW performed ex situ by microorganisms has been the goal of research in recent decades, in order to develop an efficient and less costly process when compared to conventional treatments, resulting in microbial biomass and clean water. Ex situ biological treatment by microorganisms is carried out in acclimated bioreactors, with environmental (salinity, pH, temperature and light intensity (for microalgae)), nutritional (macro and micronutrients, and contaminants concentration to avoid nutrient limitation or substrate inhibition, mainly caused by hydrocarbons) and operating adaptations (type of bioreactor, class of microorganisms, treatment time and mode of operation (batch or continuous)) to maximize the treatment performance, which is promising reaching high removal rates of total oil and greases, nitrogen, phosphorus, metals and other contaminants. Bacteria are the most applied microorganisms even though microalgae, yeasts and filamentous fungi be tested in the last decade. Advantages and limitations of each class of microorganisms are presented in this review, and more research and technological development are expected in the future for this research topic.

Neural Processing of Emotional Facial and Semantic Expressions in Euthymic Bipolar Disorder (BD) and Its Association with Theory of Mind (ToM)
2012
Adults with bipolar disorder (BD) have cognitive impairments that affect face processing and social cognition. However, it remains unknown whether these deficits in euthymic BD have impaired brain markers of emotional processing.
We recruited twenty six participants, 13 controls subjects with an equal number of euthymic BD participants. We used an event-related potential (ERP) assessment of a dual valence task (DVT), in which faces (angry and happy), words (pleasant and unpleasant), and face-word simultaneous combinations are presented to test the effects of the stimulus type (face vs word) and valence (positive vs. negative). All participants received clinical, neuropsychological and social cognition evaluations. ERP analysis revealed that both groups showed N170 modulation of stimulus type effects (face > word). BD patients exhibited reduced and enhanced N170 to facial and semantic valence, respectively. The neural source estimation of N170 was a posterior section of the fusiform gyrus (FG), including the face fusiform area (FFA). Neural generators of N170 for faces (FG and FFA) were reduced in BD. In these patients, N170 modulation was associated with social cognition (theory of mind).
This is the first report of euthymic BD exhibiting abnormal N170 emotional discrimination associated with theory of mind impairments.

In this study, microalgae were isolated and identified as
Tetradesmus obliquus
from the Northeast of Brazil, according to its morphological and molecular characterization. Its potential to be used in bioremediation of effluents was evaluated in the treatment of dairy wastewater through mixotrophic cultivation in open system. Experimental conditions were tested in different whey concentrations (0.5, 1, 2 and 4% v/v) and light intensities (25, 50, 100 and 200 µmol m
−2
s
−1
) for 14 days. The whey was characterized with high contents of chemical oxygen demand (COD) (52,886 mg L
−1
), total nitrogen (TN) (1563 mg L
−1
) and total phosphorus (TP) (663.5 mg L
−1
). It was found that the presence of exogenous microorganisms did not inhibit microalgae growth and they alone did not treat efficiently the wastewater (control). Dry cell weight (microbial sludge) reached values between 200 and 600 mg L
−1
. Increasing whey concentration was positive for COD removal capacity in terms of the amount removed, reaching up to 80% of removal rate, even though be better to work up to 1% of diluted whey (legislation requirements of discharge). Higher TN (83–94%) and TP (almost 100%) removal rates were obtained when higher light intensities (100 and 200 µmol m
−2
s
−1
) and lower concentrations (0.5 and 1% of whey) were applied. Nitrogen and phosphorus content in biomass varied between 4–11% and 0.5–1.4% (dry cell weight), respectively.

Quando a Identidade Os (Des)Une: a projecção Social e Cultural do Marítimo, Nacional e União Na Madeira Entre 1910-1926, 1945-1955 e 1974-1987/88
2011

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected infectious disease with a global distribution and a known health-related quality of life (HRQoL) impact. However, no utility-based HRQoL assessments for CL patients are available. The aim of this study was to quantitatively assess the health-related quality of life among patients with CL attending a Brazilian reference center. A retrospective interview-based longitudinal study was conducted using the EQ-5D-3L/VAS to assess the current health status during active disease, and retrospectively before the onset of disease symptoms. In addition, socioeconomic data were collected via a standardized questionnaire, and sociodemographic and clinical data were collected directly from medical records. A total of 143 patients with a mean age of 52 (±17) years were included, 73% of whom were men. The mean utility score before the onset of CL symptoms was 0.858. Comparison of responses related to health status before and after disease onset revealed significant losses (p < 0.05) in all dimensions of the EQ-5D, especially those related to pain, malaise (50%) and usual activities (27%). CL also affected the median Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score and utility score, which were 87 and 70 and 0.858 and 0.716, respectively. These results confirm the substantial negative impact of CL on all assessed dimensions of life, highlighting its role in perpetuating the cycle of suffering and poverty associated with neglected tropical diseases.

Chagas disease (CD) is a neglected disease affecting millions worldwide, yet little is known about its economic burden. This systematic review is part of RAISE project, a broader study that aims to estimate the global prevalence, mortality, and health and economic burden attributable to chronic CD and Chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy. The objective of this study was to assess the main costs associated with the treatment of CD in both endemic and non-endemic countries.
An electronic search of the Medline, Lilacs, and Embase databases was conducted until 31st, 2022, to identify and select economic studies that evaluated treatment costs of CD. No restrictions on place or language were made. Complete or partial economic analyses were included.
Fifteen studies were included, with two-thirds referring to endemic countries. The most commonly investigated cost components were inpatient care, exams, surgeries, consultation, drugs, and pacemakers. However, significant heterogeneity in the estimation methods and presentation of data was observed, highlighting the absence of standardization in the measurement methods and cost components. The most common component analyzed using the same metric was hospitalization. The mean annual hospital cost per patient ranges from $25.47 purchasing power parity US dollars (PPP-USD) to $18,823.74 PPP-USD, and the median value was $324.44 PPP-USD. The lifetime hospital cost per patient varies from $209,44 PPP-USD for general care to $14,351.68 PPP-USD for patients with heart failure.
Despite the limitations of the included studies, this study is the first systematic review of the costs of CD treatment. The findings underscore the importance of standardizing the measurement methods and cost components for estimating the economic burden of CD and improving the comparability of cost components magnitude and cost composition analysis. Finally, assessing the economic burden is essential for public policies designed to eliminate CD, given the continued neglect of this disease.

Despite being considered fragile and fastidious, Campylobacter jejuni is the most prevalent cause of foodborne bacterial gastroenteritis, and chicken meat is considered the main vehicle of transmission to humans. This agent can survive adverse conditions in the form of biofilms, but extreme stress (nutritional, oxidative and thermal) promotes the acquisition of a state called viable but not culturable (VBNC). The emergence of this pathogen worldwide and the recent international requirements in its control instigated us to qualitatively and quantitatively estimate the time required for the acquisition of the VBNC form in 27 strains of C. jejuni , characterize morphological aspects, determine its adaptive and invasive potential and perform comparative metabolomic evaluation. Extreme stress promoted the complete acquisition of the VBNC form in a mean time of 26 days. Starting from an average initial count of 7.8 log CFU/mL, the first four days determined the greatest average reduction of the culturable form of 3.2 log CFU/mL. The scanning and transmission image analyses showed a transition from the typical viable form (VT) to the VBNC form, with initial acquisition of the straight rod shape, followed by loss of the flagella and subdivision into two to 11 imperfect cocci arranged in a chain and rich in cellular content, until their individual release. RT-PCR identified the presence of ciaB and p19 transcripts in the 27 cultivable C. jejuni strains, a character maintained in the VBNC form only for p19 and in 59.3% (16/27) of the VBNC strains for the ciaB gene. The average inoculation of 1.8 log CFU/mL of C. jejuni VBNC into primary chicken embryo hepatocyte cells promoted the occurrence of apoptosis processes significantly after 24 hours of contact by one of the strains tested. In C. jejuni VBNC, we detected higher expression of metabolites linked to protective and adaptation mechanisms and of volatile organic precursor compounds indicative of metabolism interruption. The oscillations in the time of acquisition of the VBNC form together with the presence of transcripts for ciaB and p19 , the identification of cell lysis and metabolites that ensure the maintenance of the pathogen alert to the fact that C. jejuni VBNC remains virulent and adapted to stress, which makes evident the potential danger of this latent form, which is not detectable by official methodologies.

BackgroundRoutine preoperative screening of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) with reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) may reduce in-hospital SARS-CoV-2 transmission.MethodsThis was a prospective, observational, cohort study. The endpoints were the incidence of asymptomatic patients with positive preoperative RT-PCR results and the incidence and factors associated with postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with cancer referred for elective surgery. Patients with elective surgery between May and October 2020 were included. RT-PCR of nasopharyngeal swabs was performed preoperatively for all patients. Postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection was assessed within 30 postoperative days.ResultsA total of 1636 preoperative screening RT-PCR tests were performed. Of these, 102 (6.2%) cases were positive, and 1,298 surgical procedures were analyzed. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was 0.9%. The length of stay (odds ratio [OR] 1.08; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04–1.11; p < 0.001), surgical time (OR 1.004; 95% CI 1.001–1.008; p = 0.023), intensive care unit admission (OR 7.7; 95% CI 2.03–29.28; p = 0.003), and hospital readmissions (OR 9.56; 95% CI 2.50–36.56; p = 0.001) were associated with postoperative coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Using unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression, length of stay (OR 1.08; 95% CI 1.04–1.11; p < 0.001), and readmission (OR 9.02; 95% CI 2.30–35.48; p = 0.002) were independent factors of postoperative COVID-19.ConclusionsScreening patients preoperatively may reduce in-hospital SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Length of stay and readmission were independently correlated with postoperative COVID-19.
