Radar Data Processing with Applications

Stiefel Liquids: Possible Non-Lagrangian Quantum Criticality from Intertwined Orders
We propose a new type of quantum liquids, dubbed Stiefel liquids, based on (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear sigma models on target spaceSO(N)/SO(4), supplemented with Wess-Zumino-Witten terms. We argue that the Stiefel liquids form a class of critical quantum liquids with extraordinary properties, such as large emergent symmetries, a cascade structure, and nontrivial quantum anomalies. We show that the well-known deconfined quantum critical point andU(1)Dirac spin liquid are unified as two special examples of Stiefel liquids,N=5andN=6, respectively. Furthermore, we conjecture that Stiefel liquids withN>6are non-Lagrangian, in the sense that under renormalization group they flow to infrared (conformally invariant) fixed points that cannot be described by any renormalizable continuum Lagrangian. Such non-Lagrangian states are beyond the paradigm of parton gauge mean-field theory familiar in the study of exotic quantum liquids in condensed matter physics. The intrinsic absence of (conventional or partonlike) mean-field construction also means that, within the traditional approaches, will be difficult to decide whether a non-Lagrangian state can actually emerge from a specific UV system (such as a lattice spin system). For this purpose we hypothesize that a quantum state is emergible from a lattice system if its quantum anomalies match with the constraints from the (generalized) Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorems. Based on this hypothesis, we find that some of the non-Lagrangian Stiefel liquids can indeed be realized in frustrated quantum spin systems, for example, on triangular or kagome lattice, through the intertwinement between noncoplanar magnetic orders and valence-bond-solid orders.
A Comprehensive Survey on Test-Time Adaptation Under Distribution Shifts
Machine learning methods strive to acquire a robust model during the training process that can effectively generalize to test samples, even in the presence of distribution shifts. However, these methods often suffer from performance degradation due to unknown test distributions. Test-time adaptation (TTA), an emerging paradigm, has the potential to adapt a pre-trained model to unlabeled data during testing, before making predictions. Recent progress in this paradigm has highlighted the significant benefits of using unlabeled data to train self-adapted models prior to inference. In this survey, we categorize TTA into several distinct groups based on the form of test data, namely, test-time domain adaptation, test-time batch adaptation, and online test-time adaptation. For each category, we provide a comprehensive taxonomy of advanced algorithms and discuss various learning scenarios. Furthermore, we analyze relevant applications of TTA and discuss open challenges and promising areas for future research. Challenging Beijing's mandate of heaven : Taiwan's Sunflower Movement and Hong Kong's Umbrella Movement
In 2014, the Sunflower Movement in Taiwan grabbed international attention as citizen protesters demanded the Taiwan government withdraw its free-trade agreement with China. In that same year, in Hong Kong, the Umbrella Movement sustained 79 days of demonstrations, protests that demanded genuine universal suffrage in electing Hong Kong's chief executive. It too, became an international incident before it collapsed. Both of these student-led movements featured large-scale and intense participation and had deep and far-reaching consequences. But how did two massive and disruptive protests take place in culturally conservative societies? And how did the two \"occupy\"-style protests against Chinese influences on local politics arrive at such strikingly divergent results? Challenging Beijing's Mandate of Heaven aims to make sense of the origins, processes, and outcomes of these eventful protests in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Ming-sho Ho compares the dynamics of the two movements, from the existing networks of activists that preceded protest, to the perceived threats that ignited the movements, to the government strategies with which they contended, and to the nature of their coordination. Moreover, he contextualizes these protests in a period of global prominence for student, occupy, and anti-globalization protests and situates them within social movement studies.
