The Role of the Father in Anne Tyler's Saint Maybe
The role of the father has always been that of the breadwinner of the family in most of the American novels. Little was mentioned about his involvement in his familial duties and his relationship with his children. This created a gap between the father and his children and turned him into a far-fetched person for them. Anne Tyler (1941-), a southern female writer presents a new image of fathers. She highlights the role of the father within the family and gives an insight to the way fathers think. This paper deals with Tyler's novel Saint Maybe (1991), exploring the character of Ian Bedloe, an unmarried person whose mistake leads him to lose his only brother, Danny. He suffers for his mistake and tries to make up for it by taking care of his brother's children offering a new image of fatherhood.
Dysfunctional American Family and Spiritual Decay in Edward Albee's me, myself and I
This research is an attempt to present a complete explanation of Edward Albee's Me, Myself and I through applying the deconstructive theory in order to generate a better understanding of its text and thoughtful themes. According to this theory, language as a significant means of interaction does not embrace merely one meaning. This multiplicity of meanings strengthens the importance of language in Albee's theater of the absurd. For Jacques Derrida as a French deconstructionist, the concept of \"différance\" plays an imperative role in the language's multiple explanations and implications. Also, binary opposition is proven to be a significant concept, which regards such differences as central to the language, human attitude, and culture. It is shown in this study that language of Albee's play does not have a fixed meaning. In fact, it is found that language in Albee's Me, Myself and I is a highly significant feature which assists the readers to comprehend the absurd, vague, and formless lives of his American characters. Thus, benefitting from différance discloses the absurdities, roughness, and messiness of American society.
Married Life on the Brink
American domesticity in the second half of the twentieth century witnessed many changes. This is reflected in the family fiction of Richard Yates (1926 - 1992). This paper attempts to answer some questions regarding domesticity in Yates' first novel Revolutionary Road (1961). First, this novel documents social, economic, and cultural conditions especially in post-WWII America. Second, the author's autobiographical details add credibility to the novel. Although Yates has not written a separate autobiography, he depends heavily on true events and characters in writing this novel. Third, Yates tackles feminist domestic issues like women's work, marriage, and abortion. The novel depicts the heated conflict of the age, namely the pro-family VS the pro-feminist. Through the portrayal of three families living in the American suburbs at that age, Yates manages to show readers how married life can sometimes reach a dead end and, in turn, the whole society crumbles.
