Mother Language and Language Policy Planning
Language is a means of existence, expression and communication, a symbol of individual, social and cultural identity, a code for preserving civilization and the delivery of knowledge, and a basic base upon which to build society in its unity, development, renaissance and leadership. Thinking and striving to preserve the language increased with the end of World War II. Identity, national unity and comprehensive development; which all led to the outbreak of civilized battles taking place on multiple interfaces in order to control the centers of linguistic influence. Language is the mother of references in the construction of the civilized architecture and the building of its cultural edifice. In this research, we work on clarifying the nature of the mother tongue and planning the language policy, and showing successful experiences in this field among civilized peoples who gave all importance to their mother tongue in order to prepare, strengthen, develop and promote it.
The Representation of the Grandmother in Arab American Fiction
The increasing phenomenon of long-living grandparents and their novel roles and positions within both family and society in today's world has inspired authors to produce literary works that address this subject. This article, in turn, aims to offer a clear representation of the grandmother's character in Alia Younis's The Night Counter (2009) by analyzing the various roles that the grandmother's character plays in the lives of her grandchildren. As an Arab-American, Younis has an extensive background in the structure, norms, and values of the Arab Lebanese family, which are reflected in the novel. By choosing the grandmother as a central character, Younis highlights the vital role that the Arab grandmother plays in the lives of her American-born grandchildren. To achieve this, the article examines the multifaceted roles Fatima assumes as a surrogate mother and as a transmitter of native culture, as demonstrated in her relationships with her grandson Amir and her granddaughter Decimal. The analysis of these intergenerational relationships confirms the grandmother's role as a reservoir of cultural heritage in The Night Counter (2009), portrayed as someone who persistently intervenes to re-educate and redirect her grandchildren towards native culture and away from American culture, sometimes leading to tensions and conflicts between the two generations.
The Effect of L1 Negative Transfer on EFL Saudi Students' Use of Grammar in Writing
The present study aimed at investigating the effect of the L1 negative transfer on the writing of EFL Saudi students. It examined the common grammatical errors that Saudi students made while writing in English and analyzed the sources of their errors. The samples consisted of English essays written by 74 freshmen female students enrolled at Majmaah University in Saudi Arabia. The samples were analyzed and the errors classified according to grammatical sub-categories including tenses, singular/plural markers, prepositions, articles and pronouns. This study found that 81% of the students' errors can be accounted for in terms of L1 transfer. Grammatical errors were the most frequent ones, recording 67% of the total rate of errors. More specifically, preposition (40%) and tense (32%) errors constituted the most frequent subcategories of the grammatical errors. It was concluded that learning basic linguistic differences between Saudi students' L1 and English language is a necessary condition for helping the learners to overcome the problem of first language interference in their writing.

Mother Ireland, Blood-Mother, and the Lost Young Men in Selections of Modern Irish Fiction
This paper examines the crisis of three Irish young men whose lives are devastated by both their motherland and blood-mother. The discussion of this paper will be into three areas. First, how Ireland itself is portrayed as a fragile, subjugated female figure in several Irish literary works. Second, the attributes of three Irish mothers as mirroring the image of Ireland itself. Third, the dilemma of three Irish young men as products of both motherland and blood- mother. The scope of discussion will be on Cormac in O'Faolain's No Country for Young Men, Willie in Trevor's Fools of Fortune and Cal in Mac Laverty's Cal. Irish people have been victims under the heavy hand of British colonialism. The merciless hand of the arrogant colonizer turned Irish people against each other, with an inner inclination towards sectarianism and animosity. Throughout such bloody history of occupation Ireland has been pictured by both British imperialists and Irish nationalists as a helpless, poor and humiliated female or a mother who is completely overwhelmed by her perpetual miseries, who needs help to be saved. While the British portrayal of Ireland as a weak female seeks to keep Ireland in subjugation, the Irish description of Ireland as a humiliated female aims to motivate the Irish people to defend their country. Such features of mother Ireland are transferred into the blood mothers in the three selected texts. Grainne, Cormac's mother in O'Faolain's No Country for Young Men, is responsible for Cormac's escape where she cares more about her womanhood than her motherhood. Also, Eva, Willie's mother in Trevor's Fools of Fortune turns to be a reflection of mother Ireland, a victim of fortune that is full of rage. She, consequently, killed herself with bitterness and despair and led her son into the abyss of loss and escape. Though Cal's mother, Garcia, died when he was young and didn't act as an intensifier to his endless course of loss as in the previous cases, Cal was also victimized and after the burning of his house he stopped to believe in Ireland anymore. Cal's father, who survived the burning of the house, turned out to be like an old female who laments her destiny. So Cal, like Cormac and Willie, couldn't escape loss.
Free Recall of Emotional Word Lists in Arabic-English Bilinguals
This paper tries to investigate if there is a difference in the memory recall of emotional words between Arabic-English bilinguals. The methodology involves an experiment of free-recall responses to emotional word stimuli by 68 Egyptian Arabic-English bilinguals where the Arabic language is their native language (L1) and English language is their second language (L2). The participants divided into early English learners who acquired L2 at year 6, and late English learners who acquired L2 at year 12. A design of 2 x 2 x 3 three-way mixed ANOVA was administered with three independent variables; the group of L2 language acquisition (i.e., early, and late), the language (i.e., Arabic, English), and the emotionality of words (i.e., positive, negative, and neutral). The result showed no significant difference between late and early L2 learners in memory recall. However, there was significant main effect of language as well as main effect of emotionality on memory recall. Furthermore, the results showed significant interaction between emotionality and whether subjects acquired L2 early or late, as well as the result showed significant interaction between language and emotionality. Finally, the results showed significant interaction between the language, emotionality, and whether the subjects acquired L2 early or late.
