Laboring in the Shadow of Empire: Race, Gender, and Care
Work in Portugal examines the everyday lives of an
African-descendant care service workforce that labors in an
ostensibly \"anti-racial\" Europe and against the backdrop of the
Portuguese colonial empire. While much of the literature on global
care work has focused on Asian and Latine migrant care workers,
there is comparatively less research that explicitly examines
African care workers and their migration histories to Europe.
Sociologist Celeste Vaughan Curington focuses on Portugal-a
European setting with comparatively liberal policies around family
settlement and naturalization for migrants. In this setting, rapid
urbanization in the late twentieth century, along with a national
push to reconcile work and family, has shaped the growth of paid
home care and cleaning service industries. Many researchers focus
on informal work settings, where immigrant rights are restricted
and many workers are undocumented or without permanent residence
status. Curington instead examines workers who have accessed
citizenship or permanent residence status and also explores African
women's experiences laboring in care and service industries in the
formal market, revealing how deeply colonial and intersectional
logics of a racialized and international division of reproductive
labor in Portugal render these women \"hyper-invisible\" and
\"hyper-visible\" as \"appropriate\" workers in Lisbon.

يتناول هذا الكتاب جانبا من المرحلة المبكرة للوجود البرتغالي في موانئ بلاد الشرق المطلة على سواحل المحيط الهندي وجزره ومضايقه وخلجانه، ما بين عامي 1503 و1515م ويكاد ينحصر ذلك الجانب في الحوادث التي شهدها الأدميرال البرتغالي أفونسو دلبوكيرك (1453-1515) والمعارك التي قادها والذي اجتاح فيما يشبه العاصفة سواحل المحيط الهندي ومضايقاته، فقصف ودمر ونهب وأحرق الموانئ التجارية الكبيرة وارتكب من الأعمال الوحشية بحق العزل من السكان عامة.

A critical reassessment of world-shaping Portuguese voyages of discovery that places these quests in historical context. The lasting impact of historic Portuguese voyages of discovery is unquestionable. The slave trade, the diaspora of the Sephardic Jews, and the intercontinental spread of plants and animals all make clear these voyages' long-term global significance. Navigations reexamines these Portuguese quests by placing them in their medieval and Renaissance settings. It shows how these voyages grew out of a crusading ethos, as well as long-distance trade with Asia and Africa and developments in map-making and ship design. Malyn Newitt also narrates these voyages of discovery in the framework of Portuguese politics, describing the role of the Portuguese ruling dynasty—including its female members—in the flowering of the Portuguese Renaissance, the creation of the Renaissance state with its distinctive ideology, and in the cultural changes that took place within a wider European context.

العرب والبرتغال في التاريخ 93-1134 هـ / 711-1720 م
يتناول هذا الكتاب مرحلة دخول الفاتحين العرب إلى إسبانيا، وبعد ثلاث سنوات من الفتح دخلوا (أشبونة)، وهي لشبونة عاصمة البرتغال حاليا، وكان ذلك عام 714 م، بقيادة عبد العزيز بن موسى بن نصير، وكان يطلق عليها في ذلك الوقت اسم الغرب أي غرب الأندلس وبقي العرب فيها حتى عام 1150 م تقريبا، عندما انتزعها منهم ملك البرتغال (دون أفونسو هنريك) وأعلن استقلال دولة البرتغال وقد بقي العرب في جنوب البرتغال حتى عام 1250 م، ثم دارت عقارب الساعة واحتل البرتغاليون سواحل المغرب ووصلوا إلى الهند واحتلوا بعض مناطق الخليج العربي، ولكن بداية النهاية للبرتغال بوصفها دولة عالمية كبرى كانت على يد الدولة المغربية السعدية التي تمكنت من قهر جيش أوروبي بقيادة الملك سباستيان وكان ذلك عام 1578 م ֦#x203a; ثم تمكنت الدولة اليعربية العمانية من طرد البرتغاليين بصورة نهامية من الخليج العربي نحو عام 1720 م، وكثيرة هي الأحداث التي يحتويها هذا الكتاب.

Peripheral vision
In Portugal between 2005 and 2010, \"modernization through technology\" was the major political motto used to develop and improve the country's peripheral and backward condition. This study reflects on one of the resulting, specific aspects of this trend-the implementation of public video surveillance. The in-depth ethnography provides evidence of how the political construction of security and surveillance as a strategic program actually conceals intricate institutional relationships between political decision-makers and common citizens. Essentially, the detailed account of the major actors, as well as their roles and motivations, serves to explain phenomena such as the confusion between objective data and subjective perceptions or the lack of communication between parties, which as this study argues, underlies the idiosyncrasies and fragilities of Portugal's still relatively young democratic system.
