University Students' Diverse Perspectives on Google Translate
Objective: The present study examines the impact of Google Translate (GT) on pre-intermediate English as a foreign language (EFL) students' writing skills in a university setting. It aims to assess how GT influences students' writing proficiency, accuracy, and perception of language learning. Method: A descriptive qualitative research design was employed to provide an in-depth analysis of GT's role in EFL writing. The study involved 59 female pre-intermediate university students, selected randomly, including 7 individual interviewees and 52 focus group participants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and analysis of students' writing samples. A thematic approach was used to analyze qualitative data, while content analysis was applied to students' writing samples to evaluate accuracy, structure, and fluency. To ensure the consistency and objectivity of data interpretation, inter-rater reliability was employed in the evaluation of students' writing samples and qualitative responses. Results: The findings indicate that 56% of students (33 participants) used GT regularly, primarily to translate from their first language (L1) into English, improve vocabulary, and refine grammar and sentence structure. Students who used GT produced longer and more syntactically accurate texts compared to those who did not. However, opinions on GT varied: while over half of the participants highlighted its advantages, 44% (26 participants) expressed concerns about over-reliance on GT, potential grammatical inaccuracies, and the lack of authentic language learning. Additionally, some students emphasized the importance of trial and error in developing writing skills. The study also found that excessive reliance on GT may hinder autonomous learning and critical thinking, raising concerns about its long-term impact on language development. Conclusion: Based on these findings, the study recommends that language educators should integrate GT into their instructional strategies with clear pedagogical guidelines to maximize benefits and minimize over-dependence. It also highlights the need for structured training on GT's effective use to support students' language development. Research Gap & Implications: Despite the increasing use of GT in EFL contexts, research has yet to fully explore students' cognitive and emotional responses, ethical concerns, and its impact on long-term language acquisition.
When Translating from Arabic to English and Vice Versa
The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in translation, particularly for language pairs such as English and Arabic, has facilitated cross-cultural communication. However, AI translation tools often struggle with cultural context and domain-specific terminology, underscoring the need for an evaluation of their accuracy (Keen, 2020). This study aims to assess the translation accuracy of Google Bard, a free Al translation tool, by comparing its outputs to human translations across various categories, including historical, literary, media, legal, and scientific texts. The evaluation framework is based on Williams' (2004) four qualitative metrics for translation quality, which examine the morphological, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic levels of translated texts. By analyzing six texts translated by Google Bard and comparing them with human translations, this research identifies the limitations of Al in handling complex content that typically requires human expertise. While Google Bard is generally adequate for more straightforward texts, its performance diminishes with more technical documents, such as legal and medical reports, scientific studies, and literary works. Consequently, users should be cautious when relying on Google Bard for these genres, as human intervention is essential to ensure accuracy and appropriateness.

The Dynamics of Digitalization and Women's Empowerment in the MENA Region
This paper examines the link between digitalization and women's empowerment in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region using panel data from 21 countries between 1992 and 2019. The study employs the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) technique to analyze the impact of information and communication technology (ICT), specifically mobile phone subscriptions and internet use, on women's empowerment as measured by the female labour force participation rate. The findings show that mobile phone subscriptions have a positive and significant short-term effect but become insignificant in the long run. In contrast, internet use does not show significant impacts in either the short or long term. However, when considering the interaction term, mobile phone subscriptions have a positive and significant impact on women's empowerment in the long run, although the interaction term itself is negatively significant in the long run. Internet use remains insignificant in both the short and long term, but the interaction term displays a positive and significant relationship with women's empowerment in the long run. These results suggest that laws and regulations supporting women's rights enhance the effectiveness of digitalization, particularly internet use, in promoting women's empowerment. In conclusion, this study deepens our understanding of the relationship between digitalization and women's empowerment in the MENA region. By considering ICT variables and the moderating role of women-supportive laws, the research underscores the importance of mobile phone subscriptions for long-term women's empowerment and highlights the positive influence of legal frameworks in facilitating the impact of digitalization, especially internet use, on women's empowerment.
