The Environmental Kuznets Curve and Human Capital Formation in the Scandinavian Countries
Purpose: This study investigates the pivotal role of Human Capital Formation (HCF) in shaping the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) within Scandinavian countries, aiming to unravel how strategic investments in education, healthcare, and technological development drive both economic growth and environmental sustainability. Methodology: Employing a robust multiple regression analysis, this research examines data from 1990 to 2022. Key variables include CO2 emissions as a proxy for environmental quality, alongside comprehensive measures of HCF such as government expenditure on education, healthcare spending, and R&D investments. Control variables like population growth, income distribution, economic growth, and energy consumption are meticulously incorporated to ensure model validity. Findings: The findings reveal a significant and positive correlation between HCF and the EKC, demonstrating that increased investments in human capital accelerate the transition towards environmental improvement as economic growth progresses. Notably, Scandinavian countries exhibit an earlier and more pronounced turning point in the EKC, underscoring the transformative impact of education, healthcare, and technological innovation on sustainable development. Value/ Originality: This research underscores the critical importance of human capital in achieving sustainable development goals. By highlighting the successful integration of HCF into economic and environmental policies, the study provides actionable insights for policymakers worldwide. The Scandinavian model emerges as a compelling blueprint for balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship, showcasing the profound benefits of investing in human capital.

يتحدث الكتاب عن دور السياسة البيئية في تحقيق التنمية الاقتصادية المستدامة للدكتور رشدي إبراهيم السيد أبو كريمة حيث إن مغالاة الإنسان في استعمال الموارد البيئية واستغلالها لتلبية احتياجاته المتزايدة ومتطلباته المتجددة أدى إلى تغيرات جوهرية في النظم البيئية مما أثرت سلبا في التوازن البيئي بشكل جسيم مما ينعكس ذلك على صحة الإنسان وحياته وكافة الكائنات الحية وأمام هذا الخطر الداهم كان لا بد من وجود دور بارز وفعال للسياسات البيئية لمعالجة الآثار السلبية للبيئة ومن ثم تحقيق التنمية الاقتصادية المستدامة.
