Colonialism Slavery and Revenge
This study analyzes the character of Mustafa Sa'eed in Tayeb Salih's Season of Migration to the North, questioning whether he should be viewed as a psychopath or as a victim of historical and social circumstances. The research begins with the premise that Mustafa Sa'eed embodies the tension between East and West, as well as between colonial legacy and the individual's confrontation with cultural and political dominance. The study explores the themes of colonialism, slavery, and revenge as manifested in Sa'eed's character, where psychological factors intertwine with social conditions to shape his behavior. A psychological analysis is applied, examining psychopathy, behavioral disorders, and unconscious motives, within a framework derived from literary psychology. The historical dimension is also emphasized, highlighting how Sa'eed's upbringing under British colonial rule in Sudan deeply influenced his consciousness and identity. Findings indicate that Mustafa Sa'eed's character is complex and cannot be reduced to a single interpretation: while he exhibits traits of genuine psychological disorder, he is equally a product of harsh colonial conditions that fueled his vengeful tendencies. The study concludes that the novel presents a case of postcolonial identity crisis, where psychological pathology merges with historical experience. It recommends further critical studies employing psychoanalytic approaches to deepen the understanding of postcolonial literature. Abstract Written by Dar AlMandumh, 2025, Using AI
