An Inclusive and Integrated Ecocritical Approach in Both Content and Style in Sinan Antoon's the Book of Collateral Damage
This study offers ecocritical discussions of Sinan Antoon's The Book of Collateral Damage (2019) , focusing on the author's ecoconsciousness and equitable treatment of all ecological entities. Through a close reading of the novel, this study examines how Antoon develops an inclusive project which traverses the spectrum from anthropocentric to biocentric to ecocentric values, giving value to humans, flora, fauna, air, water, soil, and even artificial environments. Furthermore, it demonstrates how Antoon enlarges his scope of awareness by creating an integrated ecocritical approach in both content and style in his novel. It concludes that Antoon's thoughtful depiction of an inclusive and integrated eco critical project deserves a place on eco-fiction lists.
Shifts in the Feminist Discourse in Saudi Women's Novels during the Era of Vision 2030
Saudi Arabia has undergone profound social and cultural transformations, driven by the ambitious goals of its Vision 2030 plan. The diverse women empowerment initiatives since 2017 have contributed to a notable shift in societal norms, expanding opportunities for women in education, the workforce, and leadership roles, and reshaping their status and participation within society. In this evolving landscape, Saudi women's novels have become dynamic expressions of societal change. This research examines significant shifts in feminist discourse within Saudi women's novels published during the Vision 2030 era. The study analyses six novels by three prominent women authors: Umaima Alkhamis, Fatima Abdel Hamid, and Sahar Bahrawi. For each author, the analysis compares one novel from before the announcement of Vision 2030 and a more recent work written after its introduction. Through close readings of this selected corpus, the study explores how women's narratives engage with themes of gender, tradition, and societal transformation. The analysis identifies thematic changes, character portrayals, and narrative strategies that reflect a shift in feminist discourse. Additionally, the study contextualizes these literary works within broader societal changes and ongoing gender equality initiatives in Saudi Arabia.
Delany's Fugue
Samuel Delany's Stars in my Pocket Like Grains of Sand (1984) challenges questionable conceptions of knowledge and their limits/limitations. Theoretical study of this text has focused on considering issues of race and identity in relation to the science-fiction genre. This paper explores Delany's text from a surveillance studies perspective to analyze how surveillance, as a technological tool of power, functions in it. According to Foucault the disciplinary bent of society limits freedom. This is why tracing surveillance techniques in relation to knowledge as well as subjects/objects on Velm (an SF world in the novel) uncovers the limitations of seemingly liberal societies, who are disciplinary societies that put their power into practice through surveillance.
Monstrosity and Ecophobia in Frankenstein, Moby Dick and Dracula
Since ancient times, images of monsters have appeared in many works and served as embodiments of human fears and sources of ecophobia. Monstrosity evoked contempt, hatred, and ultimately ecophobia, which Estok describes as irrational fear, contempt, or lack of mindfulness toward the natural environment. This paper explores the character of the monster as an embodiment of ecophobia in three Gothic novels: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818), Herman Melville's Moby Dick (1851), and Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897), by interpreting monstrosity in socio-cultural contexts. The following questions will be addressed: How is monstrosity represented? How do monsters exhibit ecophobia? What role does the monster play in creating ecophobia? This paper concludes that monstrosity reflects nineteenth-century preoccupations such as human corruption and scientific excess. It also concludes that viewing monstrosity from an ecocritical perspective highlights the need for harmony in humans' relationship with nature, suggesting that humans should develop a naturalistic understanding and embrace and preserve all aspects of the natural world. Tracing the interconnections between monstrosity and ecophobia epitomizes the writers' distinct concerns about inappropriate human behaviors in both the real and fictional worlds.
Overcoming Trauma and Restoring Peace in Louise Erdrich's the Round House
Louise Erdrich is one of the prominent writers in contemporary American literature. She devotes her oeuvre to promote her indigenous Americans' culture, advocate their rights and speak out how they are still suffering in the reservations made by the Federal government. In The Round House, Erdrich attracts attention to the short comings of the Federal legal system which unfortunately has some loophole allowing non-indigenous perpetrators to commit crimes with impunity. She illustrates how such criminal acts aggravate the native community's- particularly women's- sense of insecurity and deepen their intergenerational trauma. The article will discuss the different traumas resulting from the sexual assault Geraldine Coutts goes through at the hands of white racist, Lark. It will also identify and explain the psychological consequences on the raped wife, Geraldine, Bazil Coutts, her husband, and Joe, their son. It will probe into each one's reaction to their traumas: the wife's PTSD, Bazil's resilient response and Joe's violent response. It will further explain how the son's revengeful act helps the whole family to restore peace according to Indigenous worldview. Psychological and social trauma theories, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and the indigenous philosophy of justice will function as theoretical basis for the interdisciplinary analysis in the article.
The Theme of Conflict between the East and the West in Zadie Smith's Novel white Teeth and Kiran Desai's the Inheritance of Loss
The argument of this study revolves around the crisis of reconstructing identity as a manifestation of cultural resistance in White Teeth by British writer Zadie Smith and in Kiran Desai's The Inheritance of Loss. This study will focus on how Zadie Smith and Kiran Desai attempt to build a culture of resistance in their respective nations' consciousness through their works. As colonialism has proven its influence on the histories of colonized nations, the colonized have infiltrated the colonialists' claimed justifications for imperialism. One of the controversial issues of post-colonialism is the question of identity, which has become very prominent in the modern age. This has led most writers, especially those with cultural diversity, to emphasize the idea of identity. The study will also examine how and why writers of resistance emphasize the need to free colonized societies from the cultural and political domination of imperial powers. It will demonstrate how both Smith and Desai strive to build a culture of awareness by interrogating the past, as illustrated in their novels. In these two novels, East meets West as a form of 'cultural resistance' within the context of imperialism. At the end of this study, the importance of conducting such research and the mutual resistance employed by these writers in constructing a culture of resistance will be highlighted. In each of these novels, the central tension revolves around the encounter and opposition between deeply rooted cultural factors, codes, and values in the East.
