The present research paper attempts to critically prove that Kitty Felde's A Patch of Earth, published in Robert Skloot's 2008 The theatre of Genocide, is a modern tragedy within the boundaries of the critical meaning of the term. For attaining this objective, the researcher traces the concept of modern tragedy in the writings of the modern playwrights and drama critics, with specific regard to Arthur Miller, the outstanding American dramatist. Light is specifically shed on his 1949 illuminating, yet controversial, article, \"Tragedy and the Common Man\" in which he theorizes for the relatively-new genre and pinpoints to what extent it meets with and departs from the conventions of the classical Greek tragedy laid by Aristotle in his Poetics. Through this critical survey, the researcher seeks the exploitation of Miller's critical concepts for understanding A Patch of Earth as a modern tragedy. The writer reaches the conclusion that Felde's drama is a typical modem tragedy that mainly aims to restore people's consciousness of their true position in life and change their status quo for the better.

يعالج البحث مفهوم ميللر للبطل التراجيدي من وجهة نظر النقد الحديث؛ يسلط البحث الضوء علي هذا المفهوم من خلال وجهة نظر النقد الحديث الذي يعتبر أن الإنسان العادي يمكن أن يكون موضوعا لقصة تراجيدية بكل ما تحويه الكلمة من معني، كما كانت الحال بالنسبة للملوك، وذلك لكون كلتا الشخصيتين ضحية لمجتمعها، أو لظروف معينة خارجة عن إرادتها، أو كلتا الحالتين معا. يجري البحث مقارنة شاملة بين مفهوم البطل التراجيدي الأرسطي، ذلك المفهوم الذي تبناه شكسبير في معظم مسرحياته، بما في ذلك \" هاملت\" ، و\" الملك لير\"، ومسرحية \" مكبيث\"، وبطل ميللر التراجيدي، في مسرحية \" موت بائع\"، للتعرف علي مدي التشابه والاختلاف بين كلتا الحالتين، حيث يتوصل البحث إلي نتيجة مهمة تتلخص في اعتبار نقاط التشابه بين الحالتين أكبر من نقاط الاختلاف، وأن بطل ميللر، من وجهة نظر النقد الحديث، الذي ينحدر من طبقة عامة الناس لا يقل وقعه التراجيدي في نفوس جمهور المستمعين، عن وقع البطل التراجيدي التقليدي ومكانته في مسرحيات شكسبير، أو حتي في المسرح الإغريقي.
