A Semiotic Approach to Introducing English Idioms to Nonnatives
2021
Idioms are difficult for nonnatives to understand as they are arbitrary and nonliteral. The traditional methods of idiom acquisition are inefficient as nonnatives are still unable to use them efficiently. Thus, the aim of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of the semiotic approach to introduce idioms to nonnatives. For the purpose of this research, a pre-test and a post-test were designed and administered to a sample of 20 students enrolled in the first year at the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Suez Canal University. Firstly, the students were asked to complete a multiple-choice pre-test to check their knowledge of the 15 selected idioms for this study. Secondly, the students were exposed to a Power Point presentation in which designed pictures depicted both the literal and the metaphorical meanings of the idioms. Thirdly, the students were asked to complete a post-test to notice the effect of the visual pictures on the acquisition of idioms by the students. The results reveal that using the semiotic approach has positive effect on the participants as the correct answers increased by 58.2% percentage jumping from 38.7% correct answers in the pre-test to 96.7% correct answers in the post-test.

The term bas 'enough' is used in JSA for different pragmatic meanings. In this paper, data were collected from 52 Jordanian university students in October 2019 at the University of Jordan by asking the participants when and why they use bas in their daily interactions. The study found that bas pragmatic meanings can be classified under 10 functions: threatening, exception, tempting and promising, condition, conjunction (with four meanings and, but, although, and only), objection, challenging, preferring, ending a conversation, and reasoning. The researchers support each category with illustrative examples along with their translations. The study also concludes that the term bas is functional in JSA. In addition, the term bas can be used syntactically in seven different tenses: simple present, simple past, simple future, present continuous, past continuous, past perfect, and future perfect.

An Anthroponomastic Study of Makkan Community
2021
This study is based on anthroponomastics (anthroponymy), the study of personal names, which is one of the principal branches of onomastics: the study of proper names of all kinds. In this study, personal names of Makkan males and females are investigated hoping to shed some light on the naming system applicable in the city of Makkah, in particular, and in Saudi Arabia in general. Thus, the study attempts to answer the following questions: 1- What are the socio-cultural aspects of Makkan anthroponomastics? 2- What are the linguistic aspects of Makkan anthroponomastics?

Phonemes Activating Visual Perception when Reading Three Doomsday Chapters of the Holy Qur'an
The present study intends to explore the phonemes that activate visual perception in reading three chapters of the Holy Quran. The aim is to incorporate the usage-based approach in phonological analysis of more contextually informed measures. The premise is that visual perception emerges out of distinctive usage patterns of parts of speech that share distinctive phonemic categories and sound meaning. The data demonstrated the linguistic structure of the chapters followed a scheme of contrastive network of specific phonemic categories that were salient for morphemic functions and sound-meaning associations. It was observed that the scheme was induced from the dominance of the voiceless category in forming content words that reiterated the descriptive type of these texts. The phonemic properties of this category led to visual perception. The variation of frequencies indicated the usage of top phonemes for prosodic features, morphemic functions, and sound-symbolism associ ation. It is hoped that realizing the minute units composing the context of the chapters gives reading a new perception. ews.
