Integrating Students' Own Cultre in the Teaching of Vocabulary
2017
Many researchers make it evident that culture and language are intertwined. The present paper reports on a study about the usefulness of incorporating learners' own culture in the teaching of English as a foreign language. More specifically, it aims at investigating the impact of using elements and examples from students' cultural background to help them learn meanings of unknown vocabulary items presented to them for the first time. It is hypothesized that students are more likely to obtain and correctly guess words' meanings when these appear in a context which is familiar to them. This study takes as sample first-year LMD students at the Department of Arts and English Language, University of Constantine1. The participants take part in two tests where they have to guess the meaning of a number of vocabulary items from context. The example statements used in the first test are taken from the students' homeland culture and in the second from the host culture. The findings show that including elements from students' own culture helped them guess the meaning of new words.

A Word - frequency Based Assessment of English as a Foreign Language Master One Students' Written Receptive and Productive Lexical Knowledge
2017
Learning an adequate knowledge of words is a prerequisite for linguistic mastery. The present study was basically carried out to quantitatively evaluate EFL Master One students' lexical knowledge. Its main objective was to assess and compare learners' receptive and productive written word knowledge as two prominent dimensions of a person's vocabulary knowledge recognised in many lexical researches. The study deployed two well-known frequency-based assessment tools. The first was the Vocabulary Size Test (VST) employed to measure the participants' abilities to recognize and comprehend meanings of forms at different frequency levels within given limited contexts. The second was the Productive Vocabulary Levels Test (PVLT) primarily used to assess the participants' abilities to retrieve andproduce lexical items of varying frequency levels within diverse contexts. The two tests were taken by a randomly chosen sample of 40 first year Master One students at the Department of English at the University of Constantine 1. The results of the VST revealed that the majority of the participants' receptive vocabulary sizes ranged between 5,000 and 8,000 word families, sizes classified as mid-frequency vocabulary. The data collected from the PVLT, comparatively, revealed a poor mastery of the participants' abilities to use words productively in diverse contexts. Accordingly, the highest scores were achieved only in using the high-frequency vocabulary, and then they sharply decreased at lower frequency levels.

Metacognitive Strategies for EFL Writing
2017
Throughout the years, educators have long been confronted with the predicament of how to teach their students and how to make them responsible for their own learning. Scholars have proposed various probable solutions to the previously underlined dilemma. One such highly influential suggestion, proposed by researchers, is the establishment of a teaching philosophy that takes into consideration the students' social, intellectual, physical, mental, and emotional needs. As far as language learning is concerned, instructors must bridge the gap between psychology, linguistics, and cognition. Within the auspices of the latter, metacognition is thought of as an indispensable pillar which serves the purpose of clarifying critical issues related to how students learn, how they know what they have learnt, and how to direct their own future learning.

L'école ; Une Perception De Regards Croisés
2018

The Effect Of Teaching Reading Strategies On The Students Motivation To Read In English
2015
The present study aims at investigating the effect of teaching reading strategies to non motivated readers on their motivation to read in English. It is based on the hypothesis that some students lack motivation to read in English due to their employment of inadequate reading strategies, and that if they are trained in the use of more effective ones, then this motivation will subsequently increase. To test these hypotheses, a first questionnaire is administered to all first year students of English at the Teacher Training School of Constantine in order to identify the non motivated ones and the cause(s) of this lack of motivation. Instruction on more effective reading strategies is then provided to fourteen students among the non motivated ones. At the end of this instruction, a second questionnaire is administered to these students to determine its success in enhancing their motivation to read in English.

Culture influence on Algerian Students' EFL Writing An Insight into Teachers' Practices
2018
The paper discusses a qualitative study that aims at exploring teachers' perceptions and attitudes toward the role of culture in the foreign language writing class. It is based on the hypothesis that teachers of writing at the Ecole Normale Supérieure of Constantine (ENSC) have little awareness of the role of culture in the foreign/ second language writing class, that they have little knowledge of contrastive/ intercultural rhetoric, and that their teaching instruction (methodology, feedback, evaluation) does not reflect any culture consciousness or contrastive/ intercultural rhetoric use. To verify this hypothesis, interviews were conducted with three, experienced teachers of written expression at the department of English at the ENSC. Teachers' responses have confirmed the aforementioned hypothesis.
