This study is aimed at exploring the types, meaning and functions of lexical presupposition triggers employed in the narrative tiers in the portrayal of Gatsby and Daisy's characters in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. To fulfill such aim, the researcher adapts a model proposed by Li (2010) and Du (2012) based on the theory of presupposition put forward by Levinson (1983) and Yule (1996). Through the descriptive qualitative approach, the data analysis shows that eight types of lexical triggers out of the nine studied are found-verbs of judging are not employed and the most frequently employed one is the possessive. The analysis also brings into light the descriptive, narrative, thematic and symbolic purposes of these triggers along with their different functions. The results detect Fitzgerald's bias towards what his characters represent, and reveal that presupposition present, to a greater extent, the atmosphere of illusion versus reality that dominates the novel.

The paper explores the idea that F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896 -1940) is a symbolist who occupies a unique position among his contemporaries. Like a designer or a painter, he follows the rules of some color and light theories in designing his symbolic system, which distinguishes him from other symbolists. Many critics pay no attention to his design of symbols. They discuss his use of colors as symbols, but disregard the major role of such objects as light and electricity as symbols. The paper presents a critical and literary analysis of his masterpiece. The Great Gatsby, showing (hat color and light symbols are an integral part of its plot and structure. The thematic and character developments of the novel are based on its symbolic system. The analysis applies some features of traditional symbolism and rules of the color theory and RGB to the text. The conclusion presents and sums up the results of the study.

تتطرق هذه الدراسة لعملين مختارين للمؤلف الأمريكي سكون فيتزجيرالد تجري أحداثهما في عشرينيات القرن العشرين في الولايات المتحدة، تقدم هذه الدراسة قراءة نقدية للعملين في ظل نظرية المأساة الجديدة المختلفة في عناصرها ومفاهيمها عن النظرية الأرسطية التراجيدية الكلاسيكية من حيث الأسلوب وطبيعة الحبكة والخصائص. حيث يتم التطرق في هذه الدراسة للتناقض القائم بين الحس التراجيدي في هذين العملين وغياب الحقيقة المطلقة في نقد ما بعد الحداثة وحلول المعاني التي يولدها القراء من النص. يقدم هذا البحث روح المأساة من منظور ما بعد حداثي مستخدماً مصطلحات ما بعد الحداثة في قراءة العملين موضع البحث من حيث شخصيات العملين والبيئة التي يدور فيها الحدث لبيان أن الحس التراجيدي في هذين العملين ليس نتيجة لتغير الظروف الاقتصادية أو الاجتماعية للبطل أو سقوطه، وإنما هو نتيجة لاستحالة ثبات المركز الذي من خلاله يمكن حكم القارئ المعاصر على السلوك البشري لتعدد المعنى واختلاف تفسيره.
