Tearless Sighs
This paper explores the theme of grief in Seamus Heaney's 'Mid Term Break'. An inspiring and suggestive work, the poem consists of eight stanzas depicting a profound experience of grief and pain undergone by the speaker's family after losing their youngest child in a tragic accident. For the paper's theoretical framework, the researcher sheds light on the definition of grief in psychology, distinguishing it from bereavement and mourning, its kinds, and various stages. An overview of Seamus Heaney, his works, and the dominant themes in his poetry is also given. Then, a detailed analysis of the poem under discussion is presented, showing how it reveals the theme of grief, particularly when the griever finds no words to express his state. An Ecocritical Reading of Water Symbolism in a Selection of Two Female Native American Poets
This paper offers an ecocritical and narrative reading of a selection of poems from both Harjo and Hogan. It explores native American legacy and their sense of hope and revival expressed in their poetry. The selection of poems discussed in this paper expands our understanding of narrative, with its plot, time and perspective as basic constituents and how it gives way to multi-focality, timelessness and blurring of main and marginal in the plot covering both anthropocentric and biocentric perspectives without overlooking issues of representation, human cognition and multiple levels of agency. Adopting ecocritical and narrative approaches relocates nature and spirituality, with focus on water symbols, in the centre of artistic expression not overlooking stylistic and textual properties at the representation of human consciousness. Forms of artistic expression offer to expand the oral-tradition and legacy of Native Americans yet in -English|| and poetic form.
On Man the Heart of Man and Human Life
A phenomenological analysis of William Wordsworth's Michael reveals that Michael's attachment to his land goes beyond its life-sustaining qualities to act as his source of identity and existence. It is also on the basis of this love for his land that Michael proclaims his love to his son who appears to him as a gift from nature. This misplaced notion of his love for his son vis-a-vis his love for the land forms the basis for his internal conflict which leads him to sacrifice his son in order to save his land from forfeiture. According to the poem, Michael has an extraordinary attachment to his land and bases his existence on this it.
