Revisiting the Pandemic
The present paper is mainly concerned with one of the recent post-apocalyptic fictional narratives geared toward a pandemic outbreak, namely, Emily St. John Mandel's Station Eleven (2014), with the aim of demonstrating that the human condition and what makes life meaningful are what this novel is made for exploring. For this purpose, the study aims at going beyond exploring what life might be like in the grips of a global pandemic and the lengths humans will go in order to survive to get to the bottom of Mandel's philosophy, Survival is Insufficient, and probe her new imagined future. To better frame the way Mandel establishes her post - apocalyptic setting, the present paper draws on two approaches - Tom Moylan's concept of Critical Dystopia and Evan Calder Williams' theoretical praxis named as Salvage punk to finally reach the conclusion that Mandel's Station Eleven tells more than just an apocalypse and chronicles more than just a pandemic. Perhaps paradoxically, it offers a way of finding comfort, envisioning hope, and capturing the essence of life through holding on to the best of what has been lost.

قد كان يمكن لهذا الكتاب أن يمر عابرا دون أن يخلف أثرا يذكر مثل المئات من أمثاله، المعتبرة في قائمة البيانات الأيديولوجية والجدل السياسي اليومي، لولا أن المؤلف قام بقفزة كبرى من مستوى الحدث المتجلي في تفكك الاتحاد السوفييتي، وزوال كل ما كان يعنيه مصطلح المعسكر الشرقي بالإضافة إلى الحدث المتجلي في عدوان المؤسسة الأميركية على العرب، قام المؤلف بقفزة كبرى من مستوى هذا الحدث إلى أوسع المفاهيم الفلسفية، محاولا بذلك أن يفلسف الأمر الواقع، أن يرفع وقائعه إلى مستوى من التعليل الأخلاقي، أن يجعل ما هو من صنف الوقائع العسكرية والسياسية، كما كانت نتاجا لكلية المفهوم. فهو يقلب المادة المتبعة في هذا المجال، إذ لا يقول أن الواقع يشهد بصحة الرأي أو المفهوم، بل يريد من المفهوم أن يشهد على صحة الواقع، ويعتبرها نابعة من صلاحيته المنطقية الخالصة، ومؤيدة أنطولوجيا كذلك بماهية الفكر عينه الذي يستند إليه. فالمفهوم لا يستند هنا لإضاءة الواقعة، بقدر ما تؤخذ الواقعة كمادة خام، وتلصق بالجسد المفهوم كأنه وليدته وصنيعته. وقد يكون المفهوم حقا براء من كل هذا الذي يجري باسمه. من ناحية أخرى، إن الكاتب لا يثير أبدا أي تساؤل حول معنى التاريخ وحقيقة تحركه، حول غائيته أو صدفويته، فبالنسبة إليه التاريخ خط حركي له بوابة ونهاية والأحداث تتلاحق فيه بحيث يبدو كأنها تصنع كمالا ما، وهذا الكمال سيعني نهاية التاريخ. لهذا فهو يقسم العالم بين تاريخي وما بعد تاريخي، وفي حين يبشر الكاتب بالوصول إلى ما بعد التاريخ؛ فإنه ينذر ويهدد بهيمنة قسمة معرفية واستراتيجية جديدة تتعدى السياسة الدولية إلى الكينونة الأنتولوجية. والعالم سيغدو عالمين؛ أحدهما لا يزال أسير التاريخ، والآخر قد أنجز رحلة التاريخ كلها. وفك أساره من حتميته الصارمة ليتجاوز صراع الواقع والمفهوم، ويغوص بنفسه كالأول في العالم لتفوقه وكماله.... والهدف من ترجمة هذا الكتاب كما يذكر المترجم؛ إن الكتاب هو آخر تجليات الخطاب النخبوي لبقية العالم التي نحن العرب منها، بل ضحيتها الأولى لأننا المنعطف دائما في كل لحظة تغيير حاسمة عبر ما يسمى بالمصير العالمي.

La Représentation de L'apocalypse dans Nos Frères Inattendus D'amin Maalouf
La présente étude s'intéresse à l'analyse du dernier roman d'Amin Maalouf, intitulé Nos frères inattendus (2020). Pour cela, nous avons choisi l'approche géocritique de Bertrand Westphal afin d'analyser la thématique de l'apocalypse, en questionnant les frontières de l'univers réel et de l'univers fictif. Nous suivrons le parcours du personnage, Alec, seul habitant d'un îlot de la côte atlantique, confiné dans son espace îlien. Mais, l'avènement d'un événement étrange et inexplicable l'oblige à sortir de son confinement et à méditer sur l'effondrement du monde ainsi que des civilisations.

Embracing the Absurd to Find Meaningamid the Coronavirus Pandemic in Saleema Nawaz's Songs for the End of the World 2020
March 11, 2020 is an unforgettable day for the whole world as the WHO Director -General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced COVID-19 a pandemic. Thus, the world has turned upside down ever since as millions contracted the virus while others lost their lives. Panic and grief overwhelmed the scene, and people have become preoccupied with existential issues such as isolation, identity, freedom, death, and meaning of existence. The focus of the present study is a prophetic novel called Songs for the End of the World (2020) by Saleema Nawaz, a Canadian novelist, who depicts a pandemic similar to COVID - 19. Through an understanding of existential concerns and Albert Camus's concept of 'the Absurd', the paper aims to examine how the pandemic threatens the characters' sense of existence, and how they manage to find meaning amid the pandemic. Applying Camus's ideas suggests embracing absurdity as the key to cope with the pandemic and find a meaningful life.

When the World Recedes, Art Persists
Recently, pandemic literature gained wide significance due to the growing interest among readers as well as writers who want to document and explore possibilities of life with the effects of pandemics. Emily St. John Mendel's Station Eleven (2014) is a novel that stands distinguishable among the category of pandemic literature. The novel records the end of the world prior to a pandemic flu spread and the rebirth of a new world simultaneously. The novel weaves an interdisciplinary space fusing art with fiction. The fusion of several artistic forms takes the form of a subversive narrative to the apocalyptic vision. The main premise of this essay, therefore, is to demonstrate the role of artistic forms and its transformation into a site of resistance and contesting pandemics.
