Temporal and Spatial Characteristics of Extreme Hourly Precipitation over Eastern China in the Warm Season
2011
Based on hourly precipitation data in eastern China in the warm season during 1961-2000,spatial distributions of frequency for 20 mm h 1 and 50 mm h 1 precipitation were analyzed, and the criteria of short-duration rainfall events and severe rainfall events are discussed.Furthermore, the percentile method was used to define local hourly extreme precipitation;based on this, diurnal variations and trends in extreme precipitation were further studied. The results of this study show that, over Yunnan,South China,North China, and Northeast China, the most frequent extreme precipitation events occur most frequently in late afternoon and/or early evening. In the Guizhou Plateau and the Sichuan Basin, the maximum frequency of extreme precipitation events occurs in the late night and/or early morning. And in the western Sichuan Plateau, the maximum frequency occurs in the middle of the night. The frequency of extreme precipitation (based on hourly rainfall measurements) has increased in most parts of eastern China, especially in Northeast China and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, but precipitation has decreased significantly in North China in the past 50 years. In addition, stations in the Guizhou Plateau and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River exhibit significant increasing trends in hourly precipitation extremes during the nighttime more than during the daytime.

Based on the daily data of temperature and precipitation of 108 meteorological stations in Southwest China from 1960 to 2009, we calculate the monthly and yearly surface humid indexes, as well as the extreme drought frequency. According to the data, the temporal and spatial characteristics of the extreme drought frequency in inter-annual, inter-decadal, summer monsoon period and winter monsoon period are analyzed. The results are indicated as follows. (1) In general, the southwestern Sichuan Basin, southern Hengduan Mountains, southern coast of Guangxi and northern Guizhou are the areas where the extreme drought frequency has significantly increased in the past 50 years. As for the decadal change, from the 1960s to the 1980s the extreme drought frequency has presented a decreasing trend, while the 1990s is the wettest decade and the whole area is turning wet. In the 2000s, the extreme drought frequency rises quickly, but the regional differences reduce. (2) During summer monsoon period, the extreme drought frequency is growing, which generally occurs in the high mountains around the Sichuan Basin, most parts of Guangxi and "the broom-shaped mountains" in Yunnan. It is distinct that the altitude has impacts on the ex- treme drought frequency; during winter monsoon period, the area is relatively wet and the extreme drought frequency is decreasing. (3) During summer monsoon period, the abrupt change is observed in 2003, whereas the abrupt change during winter monsoon period is in 1989. The annual extreme drought frequency variation is a superposition of abrupt changes during summer monsoon and winter monsoon periods. The departure sequence vibration of annual extreme drought frequency is quasi-5 years and quasi-12 years.

The purpose of this study was to characterize mountain river regimes in the Spanish Pyrenees and to assess the importance of snow accumulation and snowmelt on the timing of river flows. Daily streamflow data from 9 gauging stations in the Pyrenees were used to characterize river regimes. These data were analyzed by hydrological indices, with a focus on periods when snow accumulation and snowmelt occurred. These results were combined with data on Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) (from measurements of depth and density of snow in the main river basins and also simulated by a process-based hydrological model), snowmelting (simulated by a process-based hydrological model), precipitation (from observations), and temperature (from observations). Longitude and elevation gradients in the Pyrenees explain the transition of river regimes from those that mostly had low nival signals (in the west and at low elevations) to those that mostly had high nival signals (low winter runoff and late spring peakflow, in the east and at high elevations). Although trend analyses indicated no statistically significant changes, there was a trend of decreased nival signal over time in most of the analyzed rivers. Our results also demonstrated that snow processes cannot explain all of the interannual variability of river regimes, because the temporal distribution of liquid precipitation and temperature play key roles in hydrography.

2016
Because of weak dissipation effects, swells generated by fierce storms can propagate across an entire ocean basin; therefore, observing swell generation and decay and retrieving storm characteristics from a swell by satellite remote sensing are possible. In this study, based on the dispersion relation and geometrical optics principle, we used SAR wave mode data from 2003 to 2010 provided by GlobWave to track swells with peak wavelengths of more than 300 m to locate a storm-generated far-traveling swell and present the swell field related to this "static" origin. Through a comparison with ECMWF wind datasets, we conducted validations and explored some conditions that cause misjudgments in swell origins. Finally, we obtained the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of satellite-observed swell origins (i.e., the fierce wind condition) and their evolution. This work can be used as a reference for wave models, providing early swell warnings, determining air-sea surface interactions, and determining global climate change.

The temporal-spatial distribution features of prehistoric cultures since the Holocene in Zhejiang region were comparatively analyzed based on GIS spatial analysis. Results show that the prehistoric cultures expanded gradually in this region before 4000 cal. a BP. The notable expansions occurred twice, one in the Majiabang-Hemudu cultural period, the other in the Liangzhu cultural period. Meanwhile, the prehistoric cultures were disseminated from west to east coast along river valleys. After 4000 cal. a BP, as represented by the Maqiao Culture, the distributed area of each prehistoric culture contracted. This is obviously due to the termination of spreading trends to east coast, which was simultaneously accompanied by two different modes of production and economic transitions in the north and south Zhejiang region respectively. The distribution of prehistoric cultures was closely related with Holocene sea-level fluctuations, especially on the banks of Hangzhou Bay, where the distribution changes of prehistoric cultural sites were greatly affected by sea-level changes, with the closest relationships between them. After 7000 cal. a BP, the process of lowered sea-level and regression-epeirogenesis provided wider terrestrial living spaces for prehistoric inhabi- tants. Based on the comparative analyses of the changes of prehistoric cultures and the en- vironmental evolution information recorded in the Qianmutian subalpine peat of Mt. Tianmu and muddy area on the inner shelf of the East China Sea, it is indicated that the changes of prehistoric cultures were synchronized with environmental changes in Zhejiang region. Before 4000 cal. a BP, the eastward expansion of prehistoric cultures in Zhejiang occurred under the background of the Holocene Optimum, and was the expansion and extension under the joint influences of agricultural civilization and maritime civilization. However, after 4000 cal. a BP, the qeographical contraction of prehistoric cultures in ZheiianQ occurred under the back-ground of dry-cold climate trend and deterioration of coastal marine environment. It is evidenced from the above fact that the development, expansion and contraction of prehistoric cultures are positively correlated to environmental change. The change of the climatic environment is just the underlying reason for these changes and transitions of production modes and economic forms. Therefore, the climatic environment is the dominant factor of prehistoric culture vicissitudes in Zhejiang region, which has exerted great influence on distribution, dissemination, expansion and transmutation of the culture.

Analysis of Precipitation Resource and Weather Modification Potential in Anyang
Using ground water vapor pressure and precipitation data at four times of one day during 1985- 2014 in each county( city) of Anyang, precipitable water at each station was calculated, and temporal-spatial distribution of atmospheric maximum precipitable water and its change trend over the years in the city were analyzed. Results showed that atmospheric maximum precipitable water in Anyang City had the characteristics of summer far more than winter, autumn slightly higher than spring, west and south more, and east and north less, and presented the increasing trend year by year. We further analyzed the characteristic of monthly rainfall enhancement potential in each county, and mean in whole year was 80%. In spring and winter, rainfall enhancement potential in the west was bigger than east, while rainfall enhancement potential in the east was bigger than west in summer and autumn. The research provides reference basis for rationally carrying out artificial rainfall work, which could effectively ease uneven temporal-spatial distribution problem of water resource in Anyang City.

The spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of the main convectively-coupled equatorial waves were analyzed with the OLR data provided by NOAA and the method of wavelet analysis. The results indicate that the wavelet analysis can effectively distinguish MJO, Kelvin, ER, TD, and EMRG wave and the characteristics of their activities in 1992. The propagation speeds of MJO and ER wave are the slowest, following by Kelvin and TD wave and with MRG the fastest. The MJO from the Indian Ocean to the West Pacific Ocean, the Kelvin wave near the International Date Line, the ER and the TD wave around the West Pacific Ocean and the MRG in the eastern of the International Date Line have the biggest wave amplitude. The MJO in boreal winter and spring, the Kelvin wave in boreal spring and summer, the ER wave in boreal autumn, and the TD wave in boreal summer are active. The WMRG wave activates in boreal autumn, whereas EMRG wave appears year-round. These spatial and temporal characteristics agree well with the results of relevant theoretical studies, indicating that the wavelet analysis in the time-frequency domain is another effective method to reveal the evolution of convectively-coupled equatorial waves.

Rainfall Threshold Calculation Method for Debris Flow Pre-Warning in Data-Poor Areas
2013
Debris flows are the one type of natural disaster that is most closely associated with hu- man activities. Debris flows are characterized as being widely distributed and frequently activated. Rainfall is an important component of debris flows and is the most active factor when debris flows oc- cur. Rainfall also determines the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of the hazards. A reasonable rainfall threshold target is essential to ensuring the accuracy of debris flow pre-warning. Such a threshold is important for the study of the mechanisms of debris flow formation, predicting the characteristics of future activities and the design of prevention and engineering control measures. Most mountainous areas have little data regarding rainfall and hazards, especially in debris flow forming re- gions. Therefore, both the traditional demonstration method and frequency calculated method cannot satisfy the debris flow pre-warning requirements. This study presents the characteristics of pre-warning regions, included the rainfall, hydrologic and topographic conditions. An analogous area with abundant data and the same conditions as the pre-warning region was selected, and the rainfall threshold was calculated by proxy. This method resolved the problem of debris flow pre-warning in ar- eas lacking data and provided a new approach for debris flow pre-warning in mountainous areas.
