Dark Touristic Perception: Motivation, Experience and Benefits Interpreted from the Visit to Seismic Memorial Sites in Sichuan Province
2014
This study investigates the motivations of Chinese domestic tourists visiting seismic memorial sites after the great Wenchuan earthquake of 2008, and examines their interpretation of experiences and benefits of the visits. Recent research on dark tourism has raised the possibility that people are attracted to death and memorial sites in ways different from other tourist attractions. The study used an empirical research design employing questionnaires to collect data from 255 Chinese domestic visitors at seismic memorial sites in west Sichuan. Analysis revealed that the obligation of commemoration mixed with curiosity represents a different set of travel motivation in dark tourism settings than in other kinds of tourism. In addition, the empirical evidence also suggests an interrelated pattern between motivations, experiences and benefits. This study implies that Chinese domestic tourists were attracted in ways different from other tourist attractions both because they tended to fulfill their obligation of commemoration and were interested in destruction; and visitor experiences played an important mediating role between travel motivations and benefits gained.

This article explores the relationship between the tourist’s cognition of the landscape experience and the environmental conservation efforts at three distinct tourist sites in mountains of southwestern China. A total of 1500 on-site questionnaire surveys were distributed and 1142 valid questionnaires were used for statistical analysis. Results from multi-group path analysis showed that both cognition of the cultural landscape experience and cognition of the natural landscape experience had positive impacts on environmental conservation behaviors and behavior intentions of tourists. Results from comparative analysis among the three tourist sites indicated that cognition of the cultural landscape experience had a stronger power to predict senior environmental conservation behaviors and behavior intentions than cognition of the natural landscape experience, whereas cognition of the natural landscape experience had more power to predict general environmental conservation behaviors and behavior intentions than cognition of the cultural landscape experience. Furthermore, our findings benefit environmental management and sustainabilityat tourist sites.

2010
This paper discusses the definition and connotation of Theme Shopping Tourism(TST) destination, and reveals the attractive distance of TST destination based on the utility function derived from the supposed demand function. An attractive model is deduced.According to this attractive model,it is can be known that the attractive distance is related to the price difference of the theme commodities between TST destination and tourist origin place, the average expenditure of transport, the demand elasticity of price, the actual price of sightseeing spot, the critical price that a tourist will afford, the number of nights that a tourist stays on the TST destination and the price level of accommodation in the TST destination. The change mechanism of attractive distance of TST destinations is revealed in this paper, and implications on TST marketing are put forward.First, theme commodities should be luxuries.Second, lower price is the primary pulling factor of theme shopping tourism.Third, the route combining with sightseeing spots is beneficial to shopping tourism. At last,TST development is one way of rejuvenating the falling destinations.

Making Slide Shows with Zoomquilts
2010
We present a novel method for generating a slide show, which takes as input a collection of images, and outputs a video consisting of these images, switching between images smoothly in a continuous zoom-like process: as the sequence plays, a miniature of the next image is embedded in the current image and enlarges until eventually replaces the current image. Color differences, texture similarity, image complexity, etc. are taken into account to measure the distance between two images. Based on this distance, a dynamic programming algorithm is used to generate the best playing sequence which minimizes the sum of distances between successive images. The embedded image is naturally merged with the current one for smooth sequence through a graph-cut-guided blending strategy, and interframe coherence is maintained to avoid abrupt change. Experiments show that our approach is very effective on image collections of scenic spots.

Image of Landscapes in Ancient Water Towns-- Case Study on Zhouzhuang and Tongli of Jiangsu Province
2006
Researchers in several disciplines and fields agree that the image establishing has both perceptual and affecfive evaluations. The paper comparatively analyzes the image of landscapes in ancient water towns held by 1619 tourists after the investigations of Zbouzhuang and Tongli of Jiangsu Province. Based on the elements of the image of urban landscapes, the perceptual/cognitive image of tourist landscapes in water towns is developed including path, node, landmark, important courtyard, district and edge. Particularly the important courtyard plays the great role on the perceptive image of tourists, however, the perceptual/cognitive images of the district and the edge are obviously weak. Meanwhile, the finding showed that the affective images of tourist landscapes in Zhonzhuang differ with those of Tongli by the method of paired comparison. The main reason is that the affective images are influenced by the impressive scenery spots. Furthermore, the commercialization of streets and pollution of rivers are easy to be functioned negatively.
