International progress and evaluation on interactive coupling effects between urbanization and the eco-environment
Global urbanization is exerting severe stress and having far-reaching impacts on the eco-environment, and yet there exists a complex non-linear coupling relationship between the two. Research on the interactive coupling effect between urbanization and the eco-environment will be a popular area of study and frontier in international earth system science and sustainability science in the next 10 years, while also being a high-priority research topic of particular interest to international organizations. This paper systematically collates and summarizes the international progress made in research on interactive coupling theory, coupling relationships, coupling mechanisms, coupling laws, coupling thresholds, coupling models and coupling optimization decision support systems. The research shows that urbanization and eco-environment interactive coupling theories include the Kuznets curve theory, telecoupling theory, planetary boundaries theory, footprint family theory and urban metabolism theory; most research on interactive coupling relationships is concerned with single- element coupling relationships, such as those between urbanization and water, land, atmosphere, climate change, ecosystems and biodiversity; the majority of research on interactive coupling mechanisms and laws focuses on five research paradigms, including coupled human and nature systems, complex social-ecological systems, urban ecosystems, social-economic-natural complex ecosystems, and urbanization development and eco-environment constraint ring; the majority of interactive coupling simulations use STIRPAT models, coupling degree models, multi-agent system models and big data urban computer models; and research has been carried out on urbanization and eco-environment coupling thresholds, coercing risk and optimal decision support systems. An objective evaluation of progress in international research on interactive coupling between urbanization and the eco-environment suggests that there are six main research focal points and six areas lacking research: a lot of research exists on macroscopic coupling effects, with little research on urban agglomeration and scale coupling effects; considerable research exists on sin-gle-dimension coupling effects, with little on multiple-dimension coupling effects; a great deal exists on "one-to-one" dual- element coupling effects, with little on "many-to-many" multiple-element coupling effects; a lot exists on positive feedback coupling effects, and little on negative feedback coupling effects; a great deal exists on empirical coupling effects, and little on theoretical coupling effects; a great deal exists on the use of simple quantitative methods, and little on using integrated simulation methods. Future studies should focus on coupling effects between urbanization in urban agglomerations and the eco-environment, spatial scale coupling effects, multi-dimensional coupling effects, telecoupling effects, "one-to-many" and "many-to-many" element coupling effects, and positive and negative feedback coupling effects. There is also a need to strengthen the development and application of dynamic models for multi-element,-scale,-scenario,-module and-agent integrated spatiotemporal coupling systems and further improve theoretical innovations in coupling effect research and integrate and form complete and diverse coupling theoretical systems.
A proposal for the theoretical analysis of the interactive coupled effects between urbanization and the eco-environment in mega-urban agglomerations
Mega-urban agglomerations are strategic core areas for national economic development and the main regions of new urbanization. They also have important roles in shifting the global economic center of gravity to China. However, the development of mega-urban agglomerations has triggered the interactive coercion between resources and the eco-envi- ronment. The interactive coupled effects between urbanization and the eco-environment in mega-urban agglomerations represent frontier and high-priority research topics in the field of Earth system science over the next decade. In this paper, we carried out systematic theo- retical analysis of the interactive coupling mechanisms and coercing effects between ur- banization and the eco-environment in mega-urban agglomerations. In detail, we analyzed the nonlinear-coupled relationships and the coupling characteristics between natural and human elements in mega-urban agglomerations. We also investigated the interactive coercion intensities between internal and external elements, and the mechanisms and patterns of local couplings and telecouplings in mega-urban agglomeration systems, which are affected by key internal and external control elements. In addition, we proposed the interactive coupling theory on urbanization and the eco-environment in mega-urban agglomerations. Furthermore we established a spatiotemporal dynamic coupling model with multi-element, multi-scale, multi-scenario, multi-module and multi-agent integrations, which can be used to develop an intelligent decision support system for sustainable development of mega-urban agglomera- tions. In general, our research may provide theoretical guidance and method support to solve problems related to mega-urban agglomerations and maintain their sustainable development.
Tensor coupling effect on relativistic symmetries
The similarity renormalization group is used to transform the Dirac Hamiltonian with tensor coupling into a diagonal form. The upper(lower) diagonal element becomes a Schr¨odinger-like operator with the tensor component separated from the original Hamiltonian.Based on the operator, the tensor effect of the relativistic symmetries is explored with a focus on the single-particle energy contributed by the tensor coupling. The results show that the tensor coupling destroying(improving) the spin(pseudospin) symmetry is mainly attributed to the coupling of the spin-orbit and the tensor term, which plays an opposite role in the single-particle energy for the(pseudo-) spin-aligned and spin-unaligned states and has an important influence on the shell structure and its evolution.
Thickness effects on magnetoelectric coupling for Metglas/PZT/Metglas laminates
Thickness effects on the ME coefficient αME and electromechanical resonance frequency of Metglas/PZT/Metglas tri-layered laminates are investigated. The thickness of the magnetic plate is changed by assembling different numbers of the Metglas thin sheets (30μm for each layer) while the PZT plate is maintained at constant thickness (0.5 mm). At 1 kHz of the applied alter- nating magnetic field, only one peak presents in the ME coefficient (OCME) versus static magnetic field (Hs) curve. As the thickness ratio n increases, the peak value of αME first increases and reaches a maximum at approximately n = 0.519, and then decreases afterward. The peak position (Hoptim) moves steadily toward a higher value as n increases. It is suggested that the re- laxation factor k of the magnetic phase is reduced as n increases, causing the decrease of the piezomagnetic coefficient d11,m and the increase of Hoptim. By employing the micromechanics model and considering the degradation of dll,m with n, an opti- mized thickness ratio of 0.5 is predicted, which is in agreement with the experimental observations. The resonance frequency of the laminate increases with n, which is consistent with the calculation using a straightforward mixture law.
Diffusion behavior of polyelectrolytes in dilute solution: coupling effects of hydrodynamic and Coulomb interactions
The diffusion behavior of polyelectrolytes in dilute salt-free solution is studied through a hybrid mesoscale simulation technique that combines the molecular dynamics method and the multiparticle collision dynamics approach. To elucidate the effects of hydrodynamic interactions (HI), we compare results for hydrodynamic and random solvents. When HI are taken into account, we find that the chain diffusivity decreases initially and then increases gradually with the increasing strength of the Coulomb interaction. By contrast, when HI are switched off, the electrostatic-dependent diffusivity shows three distinct regions, and a plateau of approximately constant diffusivity manifests between two decreasing regions. The findings reveal that the dynamics of polyelectrolytes in dilute solution depend on the coupling effects of hydrodynamic and Coulomb interactions, and that these dynamics can be understood by considering the conformational changes of chains, the counterion condensation, and the dynamics of counterions.
Growth and transport properties of CaFeAsF_(1-x) single crystals
Using self-flux method,we have successfully grown the parent phase of the single crystals of CaFeAsF1-x.The X-ray di?raction indicates good crystallinity.In-plane resistivity shows a bad metallic behavior with a sharp drop of resistivity at about T SDW=119K.This anomaly is associated with the possible spin density wave(SDW)order.Interestingly near T SDW,the resistivity exhibits a cusp-like feature, which may be understood as the strong coupling effect between the electrons and the antiferromagnetic(AF)spin fluctuations.A reduction of fluorine or application of a high pressure will suppress the SDW feature and induce superconductivity.Hall effect measurements reveal a positive Hall coefficient below T SDW indicating a dominant role of the hole-like charge carriers in the parent phase.Strong magnetoresistance has been observed below T SDW suggesting multiple conduction channels of the charge carriers.
Experimental demonstration of the coupling effect of vertical velocity on latent heat flux
According to the cross coupling theorem of atmospheric turbulence, latent heat flux comprises two components, a vertical hu- midity gradient flux and a coupling flux of vertical velocity. In this paper, observational data are employed to demonstrate and analyze the coupling effect of vertical velocity on latent heat flux. The results highlight the presence of a coupling zero-effect height. When the observational level exceeds or underlies the coupling zero-effect height, the coupling effect suppresses or enhances the latent heat flux, respectively. Above the heterogeneous terrain in the experimental region, the overall difference between the estimated and the observed latent heat fluxes decreases from 27% to 2% (for ascending flow) and from 47% to 28% (for descending flow), after compensating for gradient flux. The coupling theorem of atmospheric turbulence is well val- idated by our analysis, supporting a role for experimental datasets in unraveling the mysteries of atmospheric turbulence.
A numerical study on the impact of tidal waves on the storm surge in the north of Liaodong Bay
A storm surge is an abnormal sharp rise or fall in the seawater level produced by the strong wind and low pressure field of an approaching storm system.A storm tide is a water level rise or fall caused by the combined effect of the storm surge and an astronomical tide. The storm surge depends on many factors, such as the tracks of typhoon movement, the intensity of typhoon, the topography of sea area, the amplitude of tidal wave, the period during which the storm surge couples with the tidal wave. When coupling with different parts of a tidal wave, the storm surges caused by a typhoon vary widely. The variation of the storm surges is studied. An once-in-a-century storm surge was caused by Typhoon 7203 at Huludao Port in the north of the Liaodong Bay from July 26th to 27th,1972.The maximum storm surge is about 1.90 m.The wind field and pressure field used in numerical simulations in the research were derived from the historical data of the Typhoon 7203 from July 23rd to 28th,1972.DHI Mike21 is used as the software tools. The whole Bohai Sea is defined as the computational domain. The numerical simulation models are forced with sea levels at water boundaries, that is the tide along the Bohai Straits from July 18th to 29th(2012).The tide wave and the storm tides caused by the wind field and pressure field mentioned above are calculated in the numerical simulations. The coupling processes of storm surges and tidal waves are simulated in the following way.The first simulation start date and time are 00:00 July 18th,2012; the second simulation start date and time are 03:00 July 18th,2012.There is a three-hour lag between the start date and time of the simulation and that of the former one,the last simulation start date and time are 00:00 July 25th,2012.All the simulations have a same duration of 5 days, which is same as the time length of typhoon data. With the first day and the second day simulation output, which is affected by the initial field, being ignored, only the 3rd to 5th day simulation results are used to study the rules of the storm surges in the north of the Liaodong Bay.In total,57 cases are calculated and analyzed, including the coupling effects between the storm surge and a tidal wave during different tidal durations and on different tidal levels.Based on the results of the 57 numerical examples, the following conclusions are obtained:For the same location, the maximum storm surges are determined by the primary vibration(the storm tide keeps rising quickly) duration and tidal duration. If the primary vibration duration is a part of the flood tidal duration, the maximum storm surge is lower(1.01,1.05 and 1.37 m at the Huludao Port, the Daling Estuary and the Liaohe Estuary respectively). If the primary vibration duration is a part of the ebb tidal duration, the maximum storm surge is higher(1.92,2.05 and 2.80 m at the Huludao Port, the Daling Estuary and the Liaohe Estuary respectively). In the mean time, the sea level restrains the growth of storm surges. The hour of the highest storm tide has a margin of error of plus or minus 80 min, comparing the high water hour of the astronomical tide,in the north of the Liaodong Bay.
Coupling effects of stress and ion irradiation on the mechanical behaviors of copper nanowires
By using molecular dynamics simulations, we studied the ion irradiation induced damage in mechanically strained Cu nan- owires and evaluated the effects of damage on the mechanical properties of nanowires. The stresses in the pre-strained nan- owires can be released significantly by the dislocation emission from the cascade core when the strain is greater than 1%. In addition, comparison of the stress-strain relationships between the defect-free nanowire and the irradiated ones indicates that ion irradiation reduces the yield strength of the Cu nanowires, and both the yield stress and strain decrease with the increase of irradiation energy. The results are consistent with the microscopic mechanism of damage production by ion irradiation and provide quantitative information required for accessing the stability of nanomaterials subjected to mechanical loading and irra- diation coupling effects.
