Validity and Reliability of a Korean Diabetes Eating Problem SurveyeRevised
Purpose: This study was to translate the Diabetes Eating Problem SurveyeRevised (DEPS-R), originallydeveloped for adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus, into Korean, and to determine its factorstructure while testing its validity and reliability among Korean adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Methods: The participants were recruited from the Diabetes Center of a university hospital or type 1diabetes camp. A total of 205 Korean adolescents aged 13e18 years diagnosed with type 1 diabetescompleted a self-reported questionnaire. After the DEPS-R was translated into Korean (KDEPS-R),confirmatory factor analyses were performed and the criterion and convergent validity were tested. Results: This four-factor model was validated using a confirmatory factor analysis. The sensitivity andspecificity of the KDEPS-R based on the Korean version of the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (KEAT-26) as thecriterion for eating disorders were .52 and .81, respectively. The KDEPS-R scores significantly correlatedwith the glycated hemoglobin levels and the Korean versions of the Beck Depression Inventory-II andKEAT-26 scores, indicating convergent validity. The Cronbach a for the total score was .85. Conclusion: The KDEPS-R is a reliable and culturally validated tool for evaluating diabetic eating disordersin Korean adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The KDEPS-R can help investigate related prevalencerates and test the effectiveness of intervention programs for Korean adolescents with type 1 diabetes. KCI Citation Count: 0
Association Between Person-centered Care, Intensive Care Experience, and Post-intensive Care Syndrome in Critical Care Survivors: A Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the association between patient-centered care, experiences inthe intensive care unit (ICU), and post-intensive care syndrome among critical care survivors. Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter cohort study conducted in the second year, focusing onpost-intensive care syndrome among ICU survivors. This study was conducted in 19 ICUs at four universityhospitals located in Busan, South Korea. The participants were 618 adults who had been admittedto the ICU for more than 24 hours between May 2019 and July 2021. At the time of ICU discharge, participants completed a person-centered care and an intensive care experience questionnaire. Weevaluated the post-intensive care syndrome of the participants at 3, 6, and 12 months after hospitaldischarge. Data analysis was performed using descriptive analysis, Pearson's correlations, multipleregression, and linear mixed model. The mediating effect of person-centered care was analyzed usinghierarchical regression and path analysis. Results: Frightening experience in the ICU was significantly associated with a higher post-intensive caresyndrome at 3 (b ¼ .09, p ¼ .021) and 6 (b ¼ .09, p ¼ .032) months after discharge. Person-centered carepartially mediated the effect of the frightening experience on post-intensive care syndrome at 12 monthsafter discharge (B ¼ 0.05, 95% CI: 0.01e0.10). Female gender, older age, comorbidities, delirium, anddischarge to an extended care facility were factors associated with increased post-intensive care syndromeat 3, 6, and 12 months. Furthermore, changes in post-intensive care syndrome during the oneyearfollow-up period were associated with comorbidities and the discharge place. Conclusions: We observed that frightening experiences in the ICU are associated with an increased risk ofpost-intensive care syndrome in survivors. Person-centered care may be a potential factor in mediatingthe relationship between patients' frightening experiences and post-intensive care syndrome. KCI Citation Count: 0
Mediating the Role of Psychological Capital Between Intraorganizational Psychological Violence and Presenteeism Among Chinese Nurses: A Cross-sectional Study
Purpose: We here examined the relationship between intra-organizational psychological violence andpresenteeism among Chinese nurses and the mediating effects of psychological capital on this association. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional correlational design. Through convenience sampling, 429nurses from Sichuan and Guizhou provinces in China were enrolled in this study. Nurses who volunteeredto participate completed the workplace psychologically violent behaviors instrument, PsychologicalCapital Questionnaire, and the Stanford Presenteeism Scale between September and October 2023. Thepotential mediating effect was explored using the Analysis of Moment Structures 26.0 software andbootstrap method. Results: Among nurses, the scores of workplace psychological violence, presenteeism, and psychologicalcapital were 19.00 (5.50, 35.50), 12.00 (8.00, 16.00) and 90.00 (77.00, 100.00), respectively; all of themwere at a moderate level. The workplace psychological violence of the nurses positively affected presenteeism(b ¼ 0.51, p < .001), and psychological capital negatively affected presenteeism (b ¼ 0.68,p < .001). Additionally, psychological capital acted as a mediator of the relationship between workplacepsychological violence and presenteeism, with its mediating effect accounting for 44.6 % of the total effect. Conclusion: Psychological capital mediated the association between intra-organizational psychologicalviolence and presenteeism. KCI Citation Count: 0
Factors Associated With Readmission in atients With Left Ventricular Assist Devices in South Korea
Purpose: Although left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are increasingly used as a standard treatmentfor end-stage heart failure, few studies have explored LVAD-related readmissions. This study investigatedthe factors associated with readmission and nursing documentation in patients with LVADs. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on electronic medical records of patients who underwentLVAD implantation at a tertiary hospital in South Korea (January 2015eApril 2023). Baseline andclinical characteristics and nursing documentation were analyzed using c2 test, Fisher's exact test, t-test,and logistic regression. Results: Of the 127 patients (mean age: 61.31 ± 13.27 years, 81.1% men), 63.3% underwent LVAD implantationas a bridge to heart transplantation, and 85 (67.0%) were readmitted within 104 days. Bivariateanalyses identified 17 variables significantly differing between readmission and nonreadmission groups. New York Heart Association (NYHA) class II [odds ratio (OR): 7.29], NYHA Class III (OR: 47.14), prothrombintime (OR: 32.65), and the presence of free-text nursing notes (OR: 7.58) were significant factorsof readmission. Conclusion: Nurses play a vital role in managing patients and helping to reduce readmission rates. Inaddition to the NYHA class and prothrombin time, this research highlights the critical importance ofcomprehensive nursing documentation. Specifically, ‘free-text nursing notes’ capture critical patientevents and observations, such as nonsustained ventricular tachycardia, bleeding, and noncompliance, providing valuable insights for clinical decision-making and enhancing patient management to preventunplanned readmissions. These findings highlight the importance of nursing roles in documentation, patient education, and personalized discharge planning to improve clinical outcomes for patients withLVADs. Need for and Acceptance of Digital Health Interventions for Self-Management Among Older Adults
Purpose: Job satisfaction among blood center nurses is suboptimal due to challenging working conditions, characterized by unexpected tasks resulting from sudden schedule changes and frequent weekendshifts. This study aimed to quantitatively examine the relationships among job stress, psychologicalcapital, personejob fit, job crafting, and job satisfaction, based on the job crafting model. Additionally, qualitative data were collected through mixed methods to gain a better understanding of the experiencesrelated to job satisfaction among blood center nurses. Methods: A convergent mixed methods research design was employed to simultaneously collect quantitativeand qualitative data and to integrate the findings from both analyses. A total of 127 full-timenurses who had completed at least a three-month probationary period at blood centers participatedin the study. Participants were recruited from three blood centers operated by the Korean Red Cross inthree metropolitan cities. The survey included open-ended qualitative questions and five quantitativemeasures covering job satisfaction, job stress, psychological capital, personejob fit, and job crafting. Thedata collection occurred from September to October 2022. Results: Regression analysis identified key factors influencing job satisfaction as personejob fit, jobstress, psychological capital, and marital status, explaining 80% of the variance. Qualitative analysis of theopen-ended responses showed five main themes: “deriving fulfillment from work,” “challengesencountered at work,” “driving forces behind positive outcomes,” “congruence between individual’straits and job requirements,” and “efforts to perform meaningful work.”Conclusions: The findings suggest the need for developing an employee assistance program andeducational initiatives aimed at enhancing job satisfaction among blood center nurses. These shouldfocus on improving personejob fit, managing stress, aiding with emotional labor, and bolstering psychologicalcapital. KCI Citation Count: 0
Effectiveness of the Individualized Self-Care Program Based on Orem's Self-Care Theory: Impact on Learning Needs and Self-Care Behaviors Following Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery e A Randomized Controlled Trial
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the specific learning needs of patients within the experimental group after receiving the Individualized Self-Care Program (ISCP) at two key time points: Time 2 (Day 2, Week 1) and Time 3 (Day 15, Week 3). Furthermore, it aimed to compare the effectiveness of the ISCP in improving self-care behavior between the experimental group and the control group, which received standard health education. Methods: The study utilized a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design and included a consecutive sample of 128 patients who had undergone their first Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) procedure. These patients were randomly divided into two groups: the experimental group (n = 64) and the control group (n = 64). The experimental group received an ISCP at Time 2 and Time 3 after being discharged, whereas the control group received standard health education. Statistical analyses included paired t-tests to assess differences in learning needs over time and Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to evaluate the effectiveness of the ISCP on self-care behavior. Results: A paired t-test indicated a statistically significant difference in the total number of learning needs identified within the experimental group between Time 2 and Time 3 assessments. Patients in the experimental group initially identified more learning needs at Time 2 (4.3 ± 1.5), but their knowledge significantly improved at Time 3, leading to fewer learning needs (2.6 ± 1.1). Furthermore, an ANOVA comparing the experimental and control groups showed that the ISCP effectively improved self-care behavior in the experimental group, with significantly greater improvements compared to the control group, which received standard health education. Conclusion: ISCP delivered in early recovery enhances self-care behaviors and addresses postdischarge gaps. The study also revealed that patients' learning needs change over time during home recovery, emphasizing the importance of tailored self-care programs for CABG patients after discharge. School Nursee-Parent Partnership in School Health Care for Children with Type 1 Diabetes: A Hybrid Method Concept Analysis
Purpose: To define school nurseeparent partnerships in school health care for children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and determine its attributes using a hybrid model. Methods: This method involves a three-phase process: theoretical, fieldwork, and analytical. A literature review was conducted during the theoretical phase. A literature search of articles from January 1991 to February 2020 was conducted using relevant electronic databases. Eighty-three articles that met the inclusion criteria were completely read. Fieldwork data were collected through individual interviews from February to July 2019 in South Korea. In the fieldwork phase, interviews were conducted individually with 22 mothers of students with T1D and 20 school nurses recruited by purposeful sampling. Inductive content analysis was conducted. The findings from the theoretical phase were integrated with those from the fieldwork phase, and the final concept was derived. Results: School nurseeparent partnership in school health care for children with T1D has been defined as an interactive process of maintaining a balanced responsibility and providing tailored care to meet needs by establishing trusting relationships and communicating transparently and openly. This analysis yielded four attributes: trusting relationships, transparent and open communication, balanced responsibility, and providing tailored care to meet needsdthis entails providing nursing actions by advocating for students and performing a negotiated role together or individually for student and family. Conclusion: The findings of this study add to the importance of an attribute of balancing responsibility for partnership in school health care. The results show that this partnership could contribute to the development of a scale, theory, and nursing intervention in school health care for children with T1D. KCI Citation Count: 3
Psychometric Testing of the Indonesian Version of Dietary SodiumRestriction Questionnaire Among Patients with Hypertension
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to test the validity and reliability of the Indonesian version of the Dietary Sodium Restriction Questionnaire (DSRQ-I) among patients with hypertension. Methods: The cross-sectional study enrolled hypertensive patients from a cardiac outpatient department in Indonesia using convenience sampling. Eligible patients received a demographic questionnaire and DSRQ-I during a one-month period of data collection. Content and construct analysis examined the validity, whereas internal consistency assessment checked reliability. Participation required 10-15 minutes on average. Results: One hundred thirty-five patients participated: mostly females (54.1%) and married (82.9%) with mean age of 58.18 ± 10.44 years. The item of content validity index was .97, and subscale content validity index was .81 for DSRQ-I. The KaisereMeyereOlkin test gave a value of .83, indicating adequate sampling, and the Bartlett's test of sphericity reached significant result (p < .001). The principal component analysis indicated three components, with 64.2% explaining variance, including perceived behavioral control (35.5%), attitude (19.3%), and subjective norm (9.4%). Confirmatory factor analysis produced a parsimonious model on the three-factor outcome by removing a single item. The indices of good fit model was achieved at x2/df = 2.17, goodness fit index = .85, root mean square error of approximation = .09, standardized root mean square means = .07, and Bentler comparative fit index = .90 (p < .001). Cronbach's alpha coefficients for attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control were .85, .87, and .85, respectively. All interitem and item-total correlations indicated adequate outcome and acceptable result. Consequently, 15 items were determined reliable measurement and included in the final version of DSRQ-I. Conclusion: The DSRQ-I is a valid and reliable instrument to measure facilitators and barrier of sodium restriction among hypertensive patients in Indonesia. KCI Citation Count: 8
The Effectiveness of Progressive Muscle Relaxation on the Postpartum Quality of Life
Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) on the quality of life of women during postpartum period. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used. The participants consisted of primiparous women who had experienced a vaginal birth in the obstetrics department of a hospital. Thirty women in the intervention group and 30 women in the control group were included. Data were collected using the Maternal Postpartum Quality of Life Questionnaire (MAPP-QoL) between June 2016 and April 2017. PMR was applied to the intervention group. PMR was performed as contracting a muscle group and then relaxing it, moving (or progressing) from one muscle group to another. Results: The mean pretest and posttest scores of the MAPP-QoL in the intervention group were 24.43 ( 4.58 and 26.07 ( 4.58, respectively (t 食 2.73, p < .05). The mean pretest and posttest scores of the MAPP-QoL in the control group were 23.29 ( 4.37 and 21.99 ( 5.58, respectively (t 食 2.23, p < .05). The difference between the mean scores of the women in the intervention and control groups before PMR was not statistically significant (t 食 0.99, p > .05), whereas the difference between the groups after PMR was found to be statistically significant (t 食 3.09, p < .05). Conclusion: Postpartum quality of life of women was increased after PMR. It is recommended that PMR be taught to women who are admitted to obstetrics and outpatient clinics and home visits be completed to expand the use of PMR. KCI Citation Count: 8
