Influence of Oxide Glass Modifiers on the Structural and Spectroscopic Properties of Phosphate Glasses for Visible and Near-Infrared Photonic Applications
2020
The effect of oxide modifiers on multiple properties (structural and spectroscopic) of phosphate glasses with molar composition 60P2O5-(10−x)Ga2O3-30MO-xEu2O3 and 60P2O5-(10−y)Ga2O3-30MO-yEr2O3 (where M = Ca, Sr, Ba; x = 0, 0.5; y = 0, 1) were systematically examined and discussed. The local structure of systems was evidenced by the infrared (IR-ATR) and Raman spectroscopic techniques. The spectroscopic behaviors of the studied glass systems were determined based on analysis of recorded spectra (excitation and emission) as well as luminescence decay curves. Intense red and near-infrared emissions (1.5 μm) were observed for samples doped with Eu3+ and Er3+ ions, respectively. It was found that the value of fluorescence intensity ratio R/O related to 5D0→7F2 (red) and 5D0→7F1 (orange) transition of Eu3+ ions depends on the oxide modifiers MO in the glass host. However, no clear influence of glass modifiers on the luminescence linewidth (FWHM) was observed for phosphate systems doped with Er3+ ions. Moreover, the 5D0 and 4I13/2 luminescence lifetimes of Eu3+ and Er3+ ions increase with the increasing ionic radius of M2+ (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) in the host matrix. The obtained results suggest the applicability of the phosphate glasses with oxide modifiers as potential red and near-infrared photoluminescent materials in photonic devices.

Aerosols
2022
Dust aerosols can participate in the heterogeneous nucleation process as effective ice nucleation particles, thus changing the physical properties of clouds. In this paper, we used an eye-safe 1550 nm micropulse polarization single photon lidar combined with meteorological stations, HYSPLIT backward trajectory analysis, ERA5 reanalysis data, CALIPSO, Himawari-8 and Terra-MODIS satellite data to compare the difference in cloud characteristics between dust and clean cirrus cases in Jinan from 26–29 March 2022. The study found that the aerosol affected the cloud effective radius, and the cloud top temperature impacted the properties of depolarization of dust ice clouds. According to the statistical results of the upper and lower quartiles, the depolarization ratio (DPR) range of dust cirrus on 26 March was 0.46–0.49, a similar range to the clean cirrus, while that of dust cirrus on 27 March was 0.54–0.59, which seemed much larger. Different height and temperature conditions lead to differences in the habits of ice crystals in clouds, thus changing the DPR. However, the range of the DPR between clean cirrus and dust cirrus showed no obvious difference, as the former was 0.43–0.53 and the latter was 0.46–0.59. Under the condition of higher aerosol loading, the lidar range-corrected signal (RCS) of cirrus clouds was stronger, and the cloud effective radius was 48 μm, larger than that of clean cirrus (32 μm). This may be the effect of dust on the microphysical properties of clouds. This study discusses the indirect effects of dust aerosols on cirrus clouds and the underlying mechanisms from the perspectives of microphysics and optics, which can provide more references for urban air pollution processes and aerosol-cloud interactions.

9,9‐bis (diphenylphosphorylphenyl) fluorene (FDPO) and dibenzotetrathienoacene (DBTTA), are synthesized as the neutral and anionic ligands, respectively, to prepare the ErIII coordination polymer [Er(DBTTA)3(FDPO)]n. Based on the intramolecular energy transfer, optical gains at 1.5 µm are demonstrated in [Er(DBTTA)3(FDPO)]n‐doped polymer waveguides under excitations of low‐power light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) instead of laser pumping. A ligand‐sensitization scheme between organic ligands and Er3+ ions under an excitation of an ultraviolet (UV) LED is established. Relative gains of 10.5 and 8.5 dB cm−1 are achieved at 1.53 and 1.55 µm, respectively, on a 1‐cm‐long SU‐8 channel waveguide with a cross‐section of 2 × 3 µm2 and a 1.5‐µm‐thick [Er(DBTTA)3(FDPO)]n‐doped polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) as upper cladding. The ErIII coordination polymer [Er(DBTTA)3(FDPO)]n can be conveniently integrated with various low‐loss inorganic waveguides to compensate for optical losses in the C‐band window. Moreover, by relying on the intramolecular energy transfer and UV LED top‐pumping technology, it is easy to achieve coupling packaging of erbium‐doped waveguide amplifiers (EDWAs) with pump sources in planar photonic integrated chips, effectively reducing the commercial costs. Based on the intramolecular energy transfer, relative gains of 10.5 and 8.5 dB cm−1 at 1535 and 1550 nm respectively are demonstrated in ErIII coordination polymer [Er(DBTTA)3(FDPO)]n‐doped waveguides under excitations of light‐emitting diode instead of laser pumping. This study is expected to achieve the application of polymer waveguide amplifiers in planar photonic integration and facilitate low‐cost packaging of the waveguide and pump sources.

Comparative Gene Expression Analysis of Malignant Mesothelioma and Lung Adenocarcinomas Induced by Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube-7 and Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes in Rats: Distinct Molecular Signatures and Canonical Pathways
2025
Although numerous experimental studies have demonstrated the carcinogenic potential of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in lungs, the underlying molecular mechanisms-especially gene expression changes associated with different tumor types-remain poorly characterized. To elucidate the molecular signatures associated with MWCNT-induced carcinogenesis, we performed microarray-based gene expression profiling of rat lung tumors induced by MWCNT-7, including both adenocarcinoma (ADC) and malignant mesothelioma (MM), as well as ADCs induced by two types of double-walled CNTs (DWCNTs) differing in fiber length (1.5 µm and 7 µm). Hierarchical clustering revealed that the MWCNT-7-induced MM exhibited a gene expression profile distinct from the ADCs. The ADCs induced by the DWCNTs and the ADC induced by MWCNT-7 shared several pathways that were distinct from those of the MWCNT-7 induced MM. The distinct pathways upregulated in the ADCs versus the MM support the conclusion that MWCNT-induced ADCs arise through distinct biological mechanisms compared to MWCNT-induced MMs and identified tumor-type-specific biomarker candidates: complement factor I (CFI) and secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1) for ADCs, and fibronectin 1 (FN1) for MM. In addition, the gene expression profiles of the ADCs induced by the three fiber types indicate that both types of thin flexible DWCNTs used in the present study promoted a number of carcinogenic pathways in the rat lung that were also promoted by MWCNT-7, which is a class 2B carcinogen. These results support the conclusion that DWCNTs are carcinogenic in the rat lung and highlight the importance of further assessments of the potential lung carcinogenicity of inhaled thin flexible CNTs.

KMnF3:Yb3+,Er3+ Core-Active-Shell Nanoparticles with Broadband Down-Shifting Luminescence at 1.5 μm for Polymer-Based Waveguide Amplifiers
2019
In this study, we prepared cubic-phase oleic-acid-coated KMnF3: Yb3+,Er3+ nanoparticles (NPs) and NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ NPs, which were about 23 nm. From the down-shifting emissions spectra of the two NPs obtained by 980 nm excitation, we observed the fact that the KMnF3: 18%Yb3+,1%Er3+ NPs were a luminescent material with a broadband near-infrared emission of 1.5 μm, and full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 55 cm−1, which was wider than that of the NaYF4: 18%Yb3+,1% NPs. Therefore, we believe that the oleic-acid-coated KMnF3:Yb3+,Er3+ NPs have great potential in fabricating broadband waveguide amplifiers. Through epitaxial growth of a KMnF3: Yb3+ active-shell on the core NPs, we compounded KMnF3:Yb3+,Er3+@KMnF3:Yb3+ core-active-shell NPs whose 1.5-μm infrared emissions intensity was 3.4 times as strong as that of the core NPs. In addition, we manufactured waveguide amplifiers using KMnF3:18%Yb3+,1%Er3+@KMnF3:2%Yb3+ NPs as the core materials of the waveguide amplifiers. When the input signal power was 0.2 mW and the pump power was 200 mW, we achieved a relative gain of 0.6 dB at 1534 nm in a 10-mm long waveguide.
